A couple of comments.. Wire size ... I used the main line test as a guide, heavier braid bends open light wire, even with a substantial mono /fluro shock.leader. Hooks on top and bottom... since the bottom hook is attached with a split ring , you can't put too much heat on the fish, so a heavy wire hook makes no sense .. top & bottom Hooks in less than 400 ft, and lighter wire , with lighter line for me Lots of good info ... thanks
I got your 120g bomb jig for daytime tuna bite. What assist hook would you suggest? The one it came with or change them to...? For a colt sniper type of jig, in under 200g, would you get rid of the trebble and add asaist hook? if so, what size and type ?
I have a question: I’m fishing NW rockfish and on a drop I might pick up a 2# rock or 50# halibut or lingcod. I’ve done well with treble and siwash hooks but not well with assist hooks. I get bites but miss fish with assist hooks. They seem to be the rage but I must be doing something wrong. Any thoughts?
You do not have to drop to the bottom. Jigs can be used mid water. As for inshore application, we have seen some success using micro jigs, but as for now, the most data we have of it being effective is offshore in 15'+ water.
I'm using 510 owner hooks and 340, 260, and 220 metal assist cord. I was wondering which metal assist cord to use for Wahoo, king Mackerel, and Baracuta? Does the cord length play a role in which metal assist cord would work best? Should I use the heaviest metal assist cord for all species no matter the jig? I'm using all three shapes, leaf - long, in weights of 150 - 400g jigs.
I can see in the video you typically have a barrel swivel attached to the jig. Curious when do you use a barrel swivel vs tying directly to the split ring.
That is a good question. I typically use a barrel swivel anytime I'm fishing for any type of bottom fish. Oftentimes, when we are targeting large game fish like bluefin tuna, I prefer to tie directly to the solid ring. (Never the split ring) The split ring is your weakest connection, and by eliminating it it allows you to fight the fish directly through the assist hook and you stand a better chance of landing triple digit fish.
Honestly, no - not that its not worth a try however, the randomness of hook penetration placement due to reaction strike behaviors makes an octopus style hook or more open face hook more effective at being successful at getting a hook set. Most fish are not inhaling the jig when they strike

So you attach it with a spit ring but tie to the solid ring that's on assist hook?
I just wanna now why they are called assist hooks and not just hooks 🤷🏻♂️ What exactly are they assisting?

How did the name "assist hook" come about? Why not just call them jig hooks? It just seems like an odd name choice that stuck.
