      There were a lot of these dual action type of weapons, because a single shot pistol, that might not actually fire, is a liability. But if you can have a backup weapon in your primary weapon, that makes sense.
      My favorite of this type was the "holy water sprinkler", which is a mace with a flintlock action and a pepper box style 4 barrel action. You'd fire the 4 shots all at once, preferably close up, then start swinging! And if the flintlock didn't actually work, you were still coming out swinging!

      Two weapons, actually, after firing: you fire, then you have a knife in one hand and a blunt club in the other. It's the kind of pistol that would have been handy in an unexpected encounter, basically, for a gentleman who may have had enemies.

    Only Adam can say "thank you my friend!" and you know he meant it. No doubt, no second thought, no tactical or reciprocal goal, just real kinship between two highly professional connoisseurs who value each other's presence. I love that about him. Just being real, honest and curious with zero ego in the way. Perhaps the biggest reason why I'm glued to this channel like my life depended on it. Exemplary. Thank you Adam. For real.
    On the gun at hand, I can imagine that during a struggle to get the top hand in hand to hand combat, and your opponent grabs your gun at the barrel, like a lizard you just let go of the tail and become even more lethal in this close range combat. Amazing stuff and the art and craftsmanship is really overwhelmingly beautiful, no hyperbole!
    *PS Shout out to **_Camera Dude (or Dudette)_** Thank you for being awesome! Must be so difficult to follow along with all the unpredictability while zoomed in, and on top of that the reflections making it difficult to focus, I assume. But you were on point, my friend! You told your visual story very well, adding visual depth to the conversation!*
    PS 2 I had to look up ramrod, but I could have guessed, if I had known it was literally what it was meant for, ramming a rod down a barrel... ramrod. As a foreigner you sometimes overestimate the complexity of the foreign language 😜

    I do like that he kind of speaks to the trends in conservation. I know this more from the painting side of things, but the big change in the last, like, less than a century, is that you disturb the original art as little as possible, you only make big changes if the work is in danger of falling apart entirely, and every change you make should be reversible. For paintings this means using specialized paints that can be uniquely removed with solvents that won't affect the underlying paint, for example.
    But also that much of modern conservation efforts have more to do with reversing previous preservation attempts in the past, when they might not have been as keen on minimizing how much you alter a work. So getting to "undo" the previous attempts to fix the gun are the kind of things that are standard practice now, and getting the opportunity to replace the old "fix" with a new functioning part is just a bonus.

      Back then there were also just a handful of people who could create a piece like this, and they were being paid very well by mega-rich aristocrats. To the point where some of the best master gunsmiths were exclusively hired by one person, just so that nobody else could get a pistol from this specific gunsmith. Some of these pistols then don't even bear the gunsmith's markings, because the employer was afraid that other mega-rich people would find out who he is and offer him more money.

The 22WRF is a 22LR sized bullet with slightly longer brass cartridge. The cartridge is inbetween a 22LR and a 22Mag as far as length. Guessed it had a blade but probably never noticed how to deploy it. What a piece of craftsmanship. The embellishments and engraving are wonderful enough but when you see the engineering!!! There can't be anything better, can there?

      It would be a tragedy if I owned it. I would ruin it by handling it constantly.

    And lets remember every part of that gun was almost certainly a handmade piece. There were no machines that could make parts with that tolerance. You filed and fitted, filed and fitted. Simply amazing craftsmanship.

    • @maximilianmustermann5763
      @maximilianmustermann5763 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not almost certainly, but 100% certainly. A high quality gun back then was also super expensive. The master gunsmith would work on that one piece for many months and the employer would certainly want a unique, single piece. They paid these gunsmiths a comfortable yearly income for a special pair of duelling pistols. Imagine being so rich that you don't only buy a Rolex watch, but you exclusively employ a master watchmaker to build a single piece just for you alone.

    One thing I noticed: The square shape of the shive is specifically designed to create a wound that will not close, causing the maximum blood loss. I kinda doubt that was intentional.
