I simmer ~1" chunks for several hours. When the tea is dark, then I will strain it. The chunks are then easy to break into smaller pieces for the next time I make tea. I always put in a bowl and leave in the oven to dry after each time I use them. Three, maybe four simmers before they are no longer leaching in to the tea.

Or buy an ice crushed blender and use that. Makes a very fine powder and keeps all dust inside.
