- Animal Crossing is a series I’ve been playing for over 10 years. As I’ve changed so did the games, and my relationship with them has inevitably been altered as well. Join me in this cosy lil vid as I talk about what it’s like to grow up with Animal Crossing

I started playing it on the Gamecube. The game had been out for 5 years but I wasn't inversed into the world of Nintendo until I was 7-8

The video track was extremely on point, everything matched up perfectly with what you were saying; I don't think there was a second of B-roll. You even used your little avatar to make facial expressions matching the script. Very cute. :)
I still miss the original game, a lot of the series' soul has been stripped back since then, though I've devoted far more time to the other games
The music, dialog, and just the general feel still can't be beat. Not to mention being able to get and play NES games
Wild World will remain as my favourite entry as the DS days of connecting with my sister and being on the same land as each other was magic-like to me.
I definitely agree with your perspective on New Horizon's island setting. I couldn't really pinpoint why I disliked playing in the day in New Horizons for a long time, but that's because it missed something I always took for granted - how multi-seasonal the town was. In NH, it's weird to see a warm, bright island surrounded by beaches and vivid blue waters in snowy or fall colors. This extends to the music, too - a lot of people really dislike NH's soundtrack. Most of the criticism which revolves around it is how monotonous or boring the music is, and while I personally like a lot of the tracks quite a bit, I think this criticism is truthfully rooted in how much it lacks multi-seasonality. A lot of the daytime tracks are summery and beachy, which is really strange to hear when its storming, snowing or a windy autumn day. I think this is a problem in NH that doesn't really get talked about, but can really create a weird disconnect in theming. Also, I just really miss train transport. It felt like everything was much more interconnected and cozy, compared to having to fly to someone else's island, whether an NPC's or a friends. I always felt the plane transport was a little removed.
Animal Crossing is such a fun and wholesome game to play with friends with family :) it's also good for anxiety and people who are struggling!
I over the past year renovated my NH island to look like my new leaf town and it really added that animal crossing vibe from the older game. It's also easy to decorate my beach because none of the beaches were decorated in New Leaf lol. I've never played wild world, but if I ever do, I'll probably make my NH island look like that too. It sounds really nice to be enclosed on both sides. It would make my train tracks look more convincing too. The side with the tunnel looks awesome cuz I was able to use floating blocks to literally make a tunnel. But the other side just looks... so awkward cuz I can't close the gap between items on the beach and items on the cliff.
Normally I don't play games that the hood or civil war veterans would clown on me for playing, but Animal Crossing is an exception. Despite action being my forte, I put cosiness and quaintness above all else, and that's why it's always had a deserving place in my gaming library.
Its a bit sad that a lot of the mystery of playing video games as a kid is lost. It always felt like there were an infinite, unknowable number of insects and fish to catch. As an adult I know how to navigate the internet to find out exactly how many and how to discover them. Games will never feel so big and mysterious again...which I guess is what growing up is

Oh dear, yes! HECK YES! I started when I was 14, with the first one on Gamecube. After reading a review in EGM, just the... idea of it was so exciting. On that train... getting ripped off by Tom Nook. I remember the giant-ass Fish Shadow, and getting the Coelacanth and yelling out loud, "What in the heck is that?!" And getting all the Nintendo Games... getting Sea Shells and... man, I still remember putting my Gameboy in and getting to go to the Island. The little Sea Shanty's, it was all so amazing. Thanks for sharing this eurothug4000, another stellar, thoughtful, and endearing analysis.
This game teaches us independence. It makes us enjoy every little bit of our life, and that’s what life is all about, making every little moment special.

Being the action-centric dumb kid back in the day, AC didn't really click with me at first. I only requested City Folk back in the day because I saw you could say hi to Resetti outside of resets on Fridays in the city and you could get stuff from him. The actual life sim wasn't that interesting to me then. "Oh why would I want to do chores here in video games when I can just do them IRL," I said. But then after hearing all my friends hyping for New Horizons at launch (and since lockdown didn't really give me a lot of options to entertain myself), I bought it right then and there. Only after I mellowed out over the years did AC finally start hitting the right buttons. Building from the ground up, that cozy feeling, even some of the brilliant art people have put out on Custom Designs just felt *good*. Even inspired me to make some of my own custom clothes of characters I didn't see get a lot of love on there (Shououts to the people making Dragalia Lost custom designs on there. Mad respect).
Some of the points made in this video were also really good (for lack of a better thought word). Given how we're moving towards credit card centric transactions and how more younger people are visiting thrift stores, bringing back shop cards and the flea market should be prime update notes (even if the latest update Nintendo said was the *last* last update the game would receive).
I kinda want to head back to my island after seeing this video, but last I played was back in early January. Festivale shouldn't be too different from last year, so I don't think I'm missing *too* much from not playing in a month. Though I probably should also focus more on my school work first before saying hi to my villagers again...

Your appreciation for aesthetics and coziness has added to my own! Some people tell me they don’t really get the appeal of AC, but you’ve described it wonderfully here- the satisfaction of customization and the enjoyment of the little moments.
So lovely as always, and a wonderful celebration of this series. The video itself is beautiful -- you captured so many little details that I honestly hadn't taken the time to fully appreciate or hadn't even noticed while playing myself. Your love for AC really shines through!

It's such a beautiful thing to see the way people connect with different games and series, and while I've never been a huge fan of Animal Crossing myself, I've always loved its aesthetics and the joy I've seen it bring to so many people's lives. Thank you for sharing. :^)

I know this is an old video but its an interesting one! I completly missed the animal crossing train (or taxi or bus) and so my first was New Horizons. Listening to long time players talk about the game and its predecessors I was interested in how much it had actually changed. Oh boy did it improve and get worse at the same time, now as well knowing the QOL updates wont be included ever and the game is how it is. I genuinly do love NH but I went back to play NL and WW because of your two videos on it. It honestly felt so much better, even if I was very frustrated I couldn't view clothes before buying ect The villagers seem way less like set dressing, theres less pressure to create a bonkers island like some people have. Its nice. I hope the next one will go back to its roots more.

What a wonderful video!!! As someone who just made a video essay on animal crossing a little while ago I clicked wondering what all we might have in common on why we love the game, and there was almost nothing! Isn’t that so incredible that there is so much to admire about the game and that two different people could make a whole list and there would still be so much variety?!
Your takes on growing up with the game are so unique to me because I have played them backwards, my first game was New Horizons and then I played all of the old ones so I found your perspective to be really interesting and MANY of the things you mentioned I had no idea about!! Things like the shopping card and the museum model you could get for 100%ing your museum.
I really loved your use of reactions to go along with what you were saying, and all of the “first person” hand held camera shots you used.
You have so much to offer as a TH-camr and this video was so great! ❤
This video is so heartwarming and personal, thanks a lot for sharing all this with us. I've played animal crossing since the first one in GameCube with my sister when I was a kid (but haven't played New Horizons yet), and it's a game that really feels like home to me.

You know, I think the main reason this channel works so well is because when you talk about the subjects of your videos, it's like we can hear you smiling. If that makes sense. Not out of snark, or smug superiority, or scorn. Just pure enthusiasm for the subject. Shame most of TH-cam is the opposite.

The New Horizons museum is wonderful. One of the things I though the game needed though was the size of Animals, even Pocket Camp had that! It just makes it a little more interesting to catch the same fish dozens of times if there's a chance of breaking an island record along with it

We had the first Animal Crossing for the GameCube in 2002 when I was 12. The commercials were SUPER weird, I still remember them 20 years later. This is so nostalgic 💕 My favorite villager was Emerald but she hasn't been back! My siblings and I spent so much time in the game, we had a blast
It’s funny how taste in video games change over time. I put hundreds of hours into Wild World for the DS, but haven’t picked up an AC game since. Same with Harvest Moon: Back to Nature. 😛 great memories though!
I'm so glad that the treasure islands and villager-trades exist, though my personal experience with the games will always revolve around the limitations of playing without such perfect access. My favorite hat in the entirety of my New Horizons wardrobe is one I got early in my playthrough from a balloon, and I have yet to find a hat I like more overall, and I don't know how true that would be if I hadn't found it by chance so early, and having grown to become so attached to it.

Animal Crossing made me realize something horrible about myself and how I play video games...
When I was a kid, I completed the museum in original and it took two full summers to do so. However, that was a disturbing fact I had to come to terms with--that I essentially wasted two full summers of my youth. I found myself wondering what the point of it all was; which of course led me down an existential spiral of "what's the point of anything" if it's not purely productive.
Of course I came to the realization that your time is what you make of it, and if you enjoy what you're doing, then it's not wasted (just make sure not to have regrets!)... but I could never shake that initial feeling, so I could never bring myself to play another Animal Crossing (or any other heavy grind game). Watching everyone I know sink literally hundreds of hours into New Horizons during the pandemic only served to reaffirm my feelings, but also reaffirmed that different people play different games for different reasons, and that's simply beautiful.
Discussing what you can do with the online tools nowadays, I couldn't help but be reminded of older people discovering Amazon for the first time: "I can do ALL of this without struggle now??? No way!!!" haha

I really like this video. I thought I was in a small minority for feeling vaguely unsatisfied with NH. Something about it (particularly pre-DLC) made me doubt my childhood recollections of WW, and it's nice to see that I might not be entirely crazy. Also, this is just a comforting video, since I grew up very isolated in a small town & met with a lot of backlash for my passions (which were For Boys -- even AC, in my hellcity). So I'm glad to have stumbled across you here. The 8-year old me within is very happy.
I did not know about treasure islands and similar stuff, which prob goes to show I'm not mostly obsessed with NH or the series in general, or need to think outside the box a bit more in terms of decorating and using items. I've played the original on GameCube, New Leaf on 3DS and NH - the latter of which is a quaint little piece of escapism in today's world. Granted, there could be changes [such as making crafting, terraforming and so on faster like you said] but it's great for me and surely many others. Nice video also.
Some of my most memorable game memories are me trying to get my ds to scan a qr code from my tiny iphone in new leaf ^_^ it'll always stick with me and anytime I have to scan with my phone I think of those moments trying to get path sets or unique clothes

You know, seeing this video really makes me think that unlike many other games, Animal Crossing is definitely one of the games that can really afford to be iterative titles. Lots of games have an underlying narrative or are made with playing the entire franchise in mind, but when it comes to the gameplay or the whole experience, it feels like a repeat version of previous games.
Animal Crossing on the other hand by its own design seems to focus more on a core experience and I think they really don't have much to lose other than trying to add things up rather than shifting up the experience. I'm bringing this up because New Horizons is the most different compared to previous entries, I think an additive experience would be better than trying to reinvent the formula.
Now with that comment aside, I seriously enjoyed the video. Really feels like a long journey through the years on animal crossing being talked over at a cafe reminiscing about some fond memories. Your content is definitely blessed and a blessing whenever they drop. Rock on!

I just started playing New Leaf. It's my first Animal Crossing game. I've been playing for about an hour every day, just checking in with the townsfolk and buying new furniture/clothes. I wish I could hang out with Isabelle more. When she first told me about going to the beach to get seashells, I really wanted her to come with me cos she was so excited. And after getting her a seashell, she was so happy I wanted to get more for her. So I bought some paper, wrapped up a seashell and then realised I couldn't send her presents. I was super disappointed. I also really wanted to go the island with her. You need a vacation Isabelle!
Anyways, didn't mean to get sidetracked, just wanted to give my overall impressions. So yeah, I love checking in with my neighbours and I love getting new clothes and furniture, but I really dislike the grind of collecting fruit/seashells/fish and what not. I do like the side stuff that comes up occasionally. Like the snow-people. My little Snowtyke has only a day left :(. I will bring him back! I love how the game keeps me coming back to continue progress on those things and see the new stuff in town. Redd sold me counterfeit art... There was a fortune teller who told me that V stripes pants are the key, I must remember that. This has been a very disjointed and meandering comment, as I do. But yeah I do really like the mechanism of time. How you do have to wait in real life for things to happen/change. I will stop talking now.
Before I was even born, my mom fell in love with the GameCube game (the only one out at the time), so one of my first memories is of playing Animal Crossing GCN.
I also remember Wild World being the game that made my dream to be a game designer.
City Folk is the game I have the most nostalgia for, and it's still my favorite one.
New Leaf was where my interest slowly died. I remember playing it the most, and had so much fun playing with my mother, sister, and friends.
New Horizons is where my interests truly died. It's incomplete, and feels like a massive downgrade from New Leaf.
I was extremely excited for it, and had the game been complete at launch, I can safely say my interest would've been revived.
I do enjoy Horizons but it took 1 step forward and 2 steps back
I'm the type of person who would play Minecraft on survival mode even when I was terrible at fighting in the game, because I really enjoyed the immersive feeling and limitation. If you died in the game, your file died in real life lol. So I like some of the inconveniences in animal crossing a lot. Since my first game was new leaf welcome amiibo, I got used to using the indoor decorator right away. But I really love how decorating outside is like a puzzle. Cuz it's just like real life. If I want to redecorate my apartment, I have to clean stuff up around so I can get around, I have to position myself in a way that I can maneuver objects. I run out of space to put loose items and have to put them in another room. It's really cool.
I like using Minecraft as my analogy or comparison, because Minecraft has creative mode. It's the same game and has a lot of similarities, but different types of people play different versions. I'm the type who wants to go mining for two hours to get enough cobblestone to build a castle. Other people want to spend those two hours building the castle itself, making it as intricate and complicated without limitation of materials.
I wonder what it would be like if animal crossing had options like that, to have different versions of the game where your limitations reflect the type of immersion you want to have.

Played the crap out of New Horizons last year because of [REDACTED] and I never played the previous titles beforehand. After finally trying it out, I get why it was so well loved for all those years. But now, unfortunately my island and homes are probably overcrowded with weeds and roaches b/c I haven't played it ever since. Game's definitely cozy, but not the coziness I look for.

This game is so cute, it should be a crime.
It's funny how you can want more freedom in a game but then not actually enjoy it when you get that freedom. The New Horizons island feels like a dollhouse that isn't meant for anything other than decoration. Even down to the villagers, who have wayyy fewer lines of dialogue, are always overly positive, never ask for favors, and can be permanent residents or switched out at will. The game is so disappointing for me, as somebody who values atmosphere above most other aspects of vid games. It feels like a façade
Also I didn't know there were Monster Hunter decorations in Animal Crossing!!! It would be awesome to see an MH video from you if you're a fan eurothug
"Never asks for favours". But they do ask for favors. Did you have extreme terrible luck encountering them or something?
@@adrianleonce455 I really did. I would talk to everybody multiple times a day and on average I'd have one villager ask for a favor every couple days. "Never" was an exaggeration but compared to how pretty much every villager asks for a favor every day in New Leaf? It's crazy
