    This video is phenomenal. If people only knew how hard it is to actually teach this effectively. In a style like this where the chords are more for structure, those rhythmic elements are so essential to setting the groove or pocket. I’m amazed. What a great teacher!

As a drummer that always wanted to play piano, I never really understood how to play funk on piano but the way you just explained it in this video resonated with the drummer in me and made sense to me maybe for the first time. I never thought about it this way. Thanks for giving me a place to start. I enjoy your videos.

    I play a whole bunch of other instruments relatively well..
    guitar bass kalimba sitar drums and synths
    but you are a bloody good teacher
    you rip it apart into fragments and explain stuff that we all internalise but pass off and forget about. You, make a point of the small stuff and make it big.
    Look after the small stuff and the big stuff will look after itself

    This video is so great. Also, you can't go wrong with Bill Withers! Can't believe it's taken me this long to realize that the voicing of these chords is everything. In fact, on the piano, I now don't think of, say, a D flat major7 as a D flat major7: to me that is now a D flat in the left hand, and F minor triad (and throw in the e flat up top for kicks)...much simpler (for me that way). How I think of these chords makes me play differently / better. It started with me finally realizing, for the right hand it never sounds cool to play the root note with your thumb (at the bottom) - gotta invert to sound good! Well, love this video. Not fair that some people have a naturally beautiful voice to begin with!

    This lesson is very clear and inspiring. I'm working on my piano skills, and this has been most helpful. Your presentation about breaking down the sixteenth notes gets to the heart of it. A teacher suggested that we are all playing a "foot drum", and accompanying ourselves on piano, bass, sax, etc. This concept has helped my commitment to playing time. Your emphasis on feeling the time, and putting the time first is spot on. Thank you!

    • @AimeeNolte
      @AimeeNolte  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Corby Simpson thank you, my friend! Very cool about the kick drum but dangerous if you take it literally. It can be a real hang out to have a foot tapping habit!

    Excellent approach to teaching the feel of funk. I’d love to see a tutorial on Michael McDonald’s piano style, especially his funky/jazz/shuffle on Minute By Minute. I saw him up close at NAMM a few years ago, and his hands are so relaxed. It looks like he is drumming on the piano. Talk about feel!

    • @AimeeNolte
      @AimeeNolte  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can tell seasoned players that and it makes a world of difference...but people who are new to funk just need to absorb it.

    • @redbrown7355
      @redbrown7355 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Aimee Nolte Music...okay, do it the way you feel makes it easier for you to explain it to the masses. It's your lesson, and you are the teacher.
      But as a student and player of the funk for my entire 53yrs of living, I can't hear it any other way....Sorry Aimee, I guess I'm hopelessly a 100% Afro American man that grew up listening to the Funk (hahaha!!) and I guess for me it's something that you feel and hard to teach to people that don't have it in their soul.
      But I'll step aside now because I don't you to misinterpret my intentions here because I love what you do and believe that you have it fully under control. Love your ear and your playing. Keep up the great work that you're putting in Sista...

    Thank you again Aimee,
    You reinforce what I have hunches about. You explain clearly what I lack the theory knowledge to articulate.
    When I watch your videos I feel like I am moving forward. I hope you really realize how good you are. I'm learning percussion and hand drum these days. It was what you said at the end there
    "You really have to feel it, you really have to get it inside you " or words to that effect, and this is the phenomenon that I witness when I manage to synch in with the musicians playing around me. It feels like the beats are the pistons pushing the music forward or something like that, as opposed to falling randomly amidst the musical space somewhere...I've had some pretty bad moments.
    But anyway thank you. You're doing a great job.
