I’m a classical piano teacher taking a dive into jazz and blues world, and your videos are so fun and inspiring! This has got to be one of the greatest chord progressions of all time - thank you for breaking it down.
My bad I just watched the full video and they basically explained it at the start 😭 The thing I like about the just the two of us chords is that it are basically 2 chords. The I and the iii. What they do in the song is basically putting ii and V’s infront of the chords what makes it sound like this (haven’t watched the full video yet so idk if they explained this)
As a piano teacher, do you know the name of the progression? 6-5-1 and then a minor 2-5 turn around is pretty ubiquitous in the R+B/ blues world of music, so I assume there's a name for it. I jut can't find it.
I need to apologize for making this PDF in the key of D-flat. It should’ve been A flat. I’m not sure why I did that, other than just being in too much of a hurry. Please forgive me. 🤪
So great. Took a road trip with my wife last month to celebrate our 35th anniversary and this song was a highlight of our playlist. Can't wait to get to the piano and try this. Thanks!
You are a better teacher than you realize and a better singer as well. Very easy and effective way to teach, bordering on zen simplicity found in martial arts training. Here is what you need to know, when you need to know….to keep you coming back, so I can teach you more, without getting overwhelmed and walking away. I use what I learned through martial arts, to teach music….and strangely enough, you do as well. You are very skilled, in many areas…and I’m learning many things from you…including music..lol
Maestro, You with great detail , illustrate; no debate! 3:16 3 & 7 ( start: Db maj7 ) Grandmamma's ring sings with your generosity-creative methodology! Listening to the harmonies with or without the bass makes my ❤hum! 14:23 : This break down is so ear hear and essential! 15:49 : inversion! 17:00 : Bring on the phat chords! The bassist and soloist, in the house! Stacking those chords, perfect 4ths, warmly supports and delights live reciprocity! The F min 11 chord makes toes curl! 😎 Am so grateful that you exist and provide such remarkable talent, teaching ,and virtuosity! Thank you, Ms. Aimee Nolte, Respectfully.
I love the idea of using quartal harmony to give the extended chords with a lot of different notes more room to breathe. This gives one a great incentive to get those fingers nice and nimble to make those stretches happen.
Just stumbled upon your vid. I dont know how to play or even read sheet music. But i love to sing a lot of different songs. When you started singing my ears perked up and the hairs on my arm stood up. Your voice is amazing!!!
Beautiful video, like so many of your others. Was fun to feel through this. Always fun to integrate the quartal thinking along with traditional jazz voicing thinking. And what a beautiful song to play over. Thanks so much for your contribution to so many of us developing our musicality.
As pianist, your best friend is the bassist, so no, you don't want to go in his way. Unless you're called Horace Silver. Thanks for the vid. Very educational and really interesting break down of this beautiful song. This can and should be applied to any tune. Even (or especially) standards.
I don't like to play the Em passing chord in the verse because I think it is very prominent in the chorus and I like to reserve it for that section so it really sticks out
another inspiring lesson full of useful information, thank you. I'm an amateur guitarist and I enjoy taking your ideas and applying them to my playing. (Selfishly) I think it would be great if an accomplished guitarist took the ideas in your lessons and explored/suggested/demonstrated how they might be used by a guitarist. Heading over to nebula now ...
Wonderful! Loved college theory until it hit 20th century, I’m still not good at it but now I love it, so I just keep throwing notes at it and hope some stick. Which they kinda do,sometimes lol
Great analysis of this beautiful chord progression! Also the groove you suggested for this song in the other video was great. After having seen it I cannot play this song without that groove!!! Thanks for both!! P.S. as far as I can seen, one chord is not named correctly in level 4 sheet
This is like a Mandella effect moment for me. I saw George Benson LIVE singing this song. I assumed that it was one of his own. If you do a search on youtube you'll even find "George Benson just the two of us" but it's being sung by Bill Withers? I'm totally lost
at @1:06 i'm hearing a high Bb on the Ebmi9 chord, but i don't see your hands playing it nor is it on the sheet music. Trying to figure out if i'm crazy or if your piano is adding extensions, or you maybe overdubbed the video with an different recording of you playing. Either way a great lesson and I appreciate it! Progression is used in so much stuff I want to get these changes down.
edit: just realized you explain that it's a different inversion at 9:40, which has the Bb in it, so you must have used audio from a different take. thankfully im not crazy and if anyone else sees this know that they aren't hearing things either! :)
That’s so funny. I think it’s probably just your ears playing tricks on you or an over toned coming from the piano. I didn’t use any different audio. Sorry it’s driving you nuts but I don’t think there’s a good explanation. Lol.
So wild! I'm sitting here alternating between 1:06 and 9:40 and they sound almost the same to me, both with the Bb ringing. I must be sensitive to some overtone or something in that chord, if anyone else hears this let me know 🥺, @@AimeeNolte
Hi Aimee, thanks for a great video. One harmonical question I have: why are there 5 flats in the music notation while the progression is in F minor? I would expect 4 flats in F minor
So thankful for being allowed to take part of this for free! Fabulously executed with perfect tempo as far as the teaching and, of course, pure joy to just listen to this super-ultra-mega-talented woman! We are truly blessed! Thank you! Learning something new everyday from you, musically but most of all new and more enjoyable methods of practicing, just incredible ❤️ PS. Was the piano a tiny bit out of tune, or was it just me? It sounded a bit off to me, especially in the higher registers. Just me?
Yet another song not too disimilar is Ashford and Simpsons Aint nothin like the Real Thing ? And loads more its all good Great job Aimee im a guitar student of a few decades love yr breakdowns i used to think i was a cord progresion Nerd now at least i know i am and proud thanks to you and Jens Larsen ha ha greatings from Scotland
I read a big band chart of this tune in Dm. But Fm makes sense. I wonder, can you go Fm7, Em7, Ebm7, D7(b5) Db7 etc French 6th D7(b5) resolves down a half step. Just thinking about it, I havent gone to the piano yet.
Hi Aimee. I just discovered this wonderful vid. Thank you, as always. The song, as you say, is in f minor. So I am confused why you have a g-flat in the key signature?
Aimee, I am technologically challenged. I have Curiosity Stream (which I finally figured out just today) but no Aimee Nolte! You've mentioned Nebula, but when I type in nebula I get stuff about nebula. Still no Aimee. How do I get your stuff on Nebula/Curiosity Stream? HELP!
You can download the Nebula app on your smart TV, or on your phone. Or you can just go to the website and login. Make sure to check your email from Nebula. That should have come when you signed up for Curiosity Stream. You won’t find me on Curiosity Stream. Only Nebula. Let me know if that helps. And thanks for signing up!
Aimee I'm trying to find out just what music ed you are providing on the Nubula platform. I see the 2 sessions on chords is there more videos and education on different areas to learn once you subscrib?
You can type my name in the search bar, and then click on my profile. It’s me standing in front of a blue background with a lot of music notes, basically, and see all of my videos. If you click on the classes tab, you can see my two classes about chords, as well as my class about Improvisation and my class about the blues. Thanks so much for signing up!
Hi Aimee. Please comment my opinion. With 5 flats (Key of Db) in the beginning, the chord progression will be.........| I - VII7 | iii - biiim7/bVI7 | I - VII7 | iii | which I consider wrong. With 4 flats (Key of Ab) the chord progression will be .......... | IV - III7 | vi - Vm7/I7 | IV - III7 | vi | which I consider well. Don't you think so ??? A big kiss for you. Best regards, José
Stronger Than You is a song from the show Steven Universe that unabashedly uses this progression, and it’s so intentional because the lyrics are about unity between two partners (who are queer aliens… it’s a fantastic show with fantastic music!)
thank you so much at 5min 55 i love your bass like groove it sounds very funky for me i need to feel that maybe i am wrong but i think that there so much things to create on the left hand for pianist keep going it sounds terrible
Ok that’s it.. “Everything I know about chords”.. I’m joining Nebula right now ! PS. Love your “No boundaries “ approach to music . Fun fact : I was a part of the first hip hop/jazz collaborations.. Es una canción bonita, pero nada más. Simplona como todo lo que viene del mundo anglo.
I need to apologize for making this PDF in the key of D-flat. It should’ve been A flat. I’m not sure why I did that, other than just being in too much of a hurry. Please forgive me. 🤪
Play it in all 12 keys!
Shouldn't it be in f minor? The relative minor of Aflat
I told my guitarist it was in Db and he said that was cool. I started at level 1 and really like 3 and working on 2!
the 2-5-1 to the VI is amazing
So great. Took a road trip with my wife last month to celebrate our 35th anniversary and this song was a highlight of our playlist. Can't wait to get to the piano and try this. Thanks!
I really appreciate the depth you decided to explore, elaborating on your harmonic choices, it really helped my understanding.
After a decade fiddling around chords have never been clearer for me! Looking forward to part 2🎉
Great to hear!

What a beautiful voice, too, Aimee.

wonderful lesson and fabulous song choice... I remember it from my youth but didn't realize it is just sublime!
Aimee, not only do you break down the tune so well, I love your voice! Nice
thanks! awesome tutorial!
Awesome! Thanks, Aimee!
Brilliant as always. What a generous and lucid teacher!
Congrats 🎉🎉 Aimee, love these levels to this classic song , Just the two of us...
keep up the great work bless you loads!...
It's magical what you can achieve with only 4 notes in the open voicings

Your singing voice is beautiful
Such a smooth pretty voice !!! Dresses up the keys real nice .
Watching your video from the Philippines and Wow Aimee your aimazing..😊
This is such a fun progression to play. I remember learning it from one from your older videos. So many fun extensions fit over each chord.
I'm loving your lessons Aimee. My music theory skills have doubled over the last year. ❤
You sing so beautifully.
Excellent video!
Another song with similar chording..."whenever I call you friend'. Nice video. Thank you..
thank you for this! very interesting stuff. love the spicy chords

maybe my brain is putting it in there cause that's also the note you're singing? (The 5th of the chord). I'm questioning my sanity at this point

Hi Aimee. I just discovered this wonderful vid. Thank you, as always. The song, as you say, is in f minor. So I am confused why you have a g-flat in the key signature?
Yeah that was a dumb mistake on my part🤪
@@AimeeNolte Ha! I went down a phrygian rat hole. who knew that even you could make mistakes 🤣
Level 4, 1st bar: the symbol C7alt is incorrect on count 4 there since G is not part of the altered scale.
Mariah Carey - Emotions and Jamiroquai Virtual Insanity use same harmony
Which one is the video to be able to make it more groovy with the left hand that you speak about in level one?
It’s my only other Just The Two Of Us video. I think it’s called “funk tutorial”

@AimeeNolte give me 5 bucks, and I'll try to watch all your videos. It'll be extra if you want me to do assignments.
Um... no one noticed at around 17:00 that you really meant to write Eb-11, not E-11? Or am I missing something? : )

So I'm checking this out on the guitar and I'm thinking Ab/Db Cm7+5 for the first 2 chords for that Steely Danish thang. 😂
These chords are also very much like the first 8 bars of “Blue In Green”.
