Crossing the Alps over Stubai glacier

  • There are only a very few days per year where you are able to cross from the north/south side of the Alps and return afterwards. This was one of those unique days. I launched from Schlick2000 at 10 am and was able to cross the main chain of the Austrian alps around 11:10 am. Then flew to Italy (Meran), Reschensee (close to Swiss border) and back to the take-off (191 km). Unforgettable!

Hello, can you explain me something Pal? I thought wind was blowing from your left in this video thats why you stood with the cliffs to your right searching for thermals but at minute 10:23 you have passed above the mountains and turned right. Wasnt that a place full of rotor? Or you have flown in nil winds? Im a nob in paragliding, absolutely no alpine XC flights under my belt. There is no one to teach me to make me understand how you fly through mountains without fearing rotors.

FREEDOM winds were really light on this day, practically close to zero. I was just staying on the sunny side to catch thermals. All the lift along the way was thermal lift. Later in the afternoon the valley winds picked up and I flew into some serious rotors, but the wind in the altitude remained calm. Cheers ;)

+paltakats Thanks for clearing this up for me. One more thing, when going XC if happens not to find any thermal to keep going what you do about it? You land somewhere in those remote alpine locations? I wish i could live in a place where i can fly often to work my skills up.

FREEDOM well...that can always happen....it is a lot easier AND safer to fly XC over the flatlands. In the mountains you need a lot more additional knowledge about the valley wind systems and their dangers, the mountains and the geographic...that takes time and lots of hours flying. Good luck ;)

Hi Pal, just wondering if the loops in the B riser are handles or are you flying with half speed bar all the time?
