Do you mean the step to connect the Hatch to your phone? Make sure the Bluetooth is active on your phone and make sure there's a good 2.4G wifi network at the location of the Hatch.
Stay away from this product! The app is terrible, the device will stop responding to the app after a couple months and support is useless. It's nothing but an ugly paperweight now.

Can you use this sound machine without downloading the app or use your WiFi?
App and Wi-Fi are required during initially setup. But once setup is done, it can work even without Wi-Fi.

You need to subscribe for the hatch rest to work or what’s the subscription for?
Without subscription it will still work. The subscription gives you more choices of sounds and narrated bedtime stories.

How do you use the monitor function?
The audio monitor function is only available with the newest Hatch Rest plus version. In the app here’s a tab at the bottom says monitor.

It'll work fine manually. Back in my day, we figured it out without an app for everything!
