  • Back in 1983, The Washington State Department of Transportation drove North on SR-529 and recorded video to document the highway. This was part of a project that photographed/videotaped the states highways every couple of years. This video now resides at The Washington State Archives who were kind enough to share it.

    This is awesome! Was able to show my kids stuff I remember growing up in North Everett as a kid. The Town House Restaurant, Castle Drugs, the Royal Fork Buffet, Jafco, my goodness. The stuff they have grown up seeing and how much it's changed. This was really cool

      I got to move with my husband to North Everett in 2010 (I had lived there from 1974 until 1985) and it was so weird to see how much had changed, but how much had stayed the same.

      Bought my first stereo at JAFCO; a Zenith. Complete with an 8-track tape player. Nothing says hi-fi, quite like an 8-track. 😂😂😂

    WOW. So much has changed from when this video was taken. It's 2023 now. And Everett is still changing.

    I've driven this route too many times to count - both directions - well before and after this video was taken. I went to Everett Community College mid- to late-70's. I remember that Quicky Mart gas station at about 9:37 used to have jaw-droppingly low gas prices back in the late 60's-early 70's, because they'd get in price wars with the station over on the west side of the highway (the "TIME" station). You'd see regular for 15 or 16 cents a gallon back then. *That was before the Arab Oil Embargo hit us in '73, lol. Ah, memories!

    I remember going to an Everett Giants (now Aquasox) game in 1992 or 93. Even as a little kid it struck me as odd that you could exit the freeway on the left side 😆 Now they have a regular exit on the right side of the freeway, and this one is carpool only.

    • @TopGunTrucker
      @TopGunTrucker ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I remember it being like this all the way till the very early 2000s! It was an exit for a hwy so it made sense back in the day when people knew how to drive and the carpool lane was well non existent

    I notice that on some of your videos the WSDOT drives the road both directions. Is there any chance you have SR-529 heading southbound? I'd like to see if I can get a better look at the west side of State Ave in Marysville between 4th and 1st since all of that got torn down in the late 80s to make way for the "mall", and I think if the camera was heading south I'd be able to see more of that side of the road.

    This looks more like 1973! I don't see any 80 model cars on this road. I see 50's, 60's and 70 model car only. Are you sure this was 1983? I know the date on the camera says 6//6/83 but...

      I'm one of the hated peeps who moved here from California in the 1980s. We were shocked by what you are noting here. There were seemingly zero new cars on the roads, and definitely no clean cars...ever. LOL A total departure from the car culture of SoCal. The Western WA of today is a blend of the old school, and a lot of new California-type development. Heck, the stretch of town shown in the video here is very slightly changed compared to other areas in the region. It kinda looks like that if you drive it today.

      Ummm, there are a shit ton of 80's vehicles in this video. Yes, we are sure this video is from 1983. I was sixteen during the summer of 83, and everything in this video is EXACTLY the way I remember downtown Everett at the time. I went to Lowell Elementary, Port Gardner Middle School, then finally Everett High. Class of 85!! 🙌
