It is a bit hard to explain, but I had a bit more fun playing DiRT 2. I definitely recommend picking DiRT 2 up :) They are both AMAZING games!

+EZ Assegai imho #1 reason is that it simply had generally more enjoyable tracks. I can't think of a single stage I dislike in that game. Rallycross stages are especially superior to D3 stages.
Physics-wise it was also better. Hard to notice, but DiRT 3 had them adjusted to be more arcade-y to make Gymkhana viable. DiRT 2 feels just right.
Selection of cars was somewhat the same, tho a lot of good cars arrived to DiRT 3 only after DLCs.
Music is D2 is mostly rock, in D3 it's random mix of everything. I prefer rock.
My only gripe with D2 is the retarded main menu, but I got used to it.

But, you are absolutely right in the way that Dirt Rally created more fans on the run and now people have known the greatness of Colin McRae Series Through Dirt Rally, so they want more of it, thus, saving the series as you mentioned

I don't regret having dirt 3, always a good casual ride in online mode and it doesn't feel like stupid NFS.

Dirt Rally is a return to form, and hopefully the next Dirt game we get will be a AAA Rally Sim with better graphics, more cars and locations etc.
Remember though, DiRT was originally an Arcade spin off of Colin McRae Rally. So it was an entirely different series. But they've brought it back to Simulation now anyways.
I know, and it was a good game none the less, it was really fun and still somewhat realistic. But as soon as McRae died Codemasters basically said fuck 'em. Now that that old man McRae is gone lets get those dude bros from the X games and make a game about them instead.
I even thought Dirt 2 was a good game but i really hated the direction it was going, im pretty sure his family told them to no longer use his name for anymore merchandise not long after that. Which Codemasters were obviously over the moon with considering that Dirt 3 was Dirt 2 on steroids. Don't even get me started on showdown.
Im not against more fun arcade racing games, Motorstorm is my favourite Racing franchise, but they should of just started a new IP and made a full blown X games game or something with motorX and ATVs and all that sort of thing. But im glad that atleast some people at Codemasters thought it was time to bring these games back to thier roots.
I don't think the McRea games were very accurate simulations. They were more comparable with something like Gran Turismo or the Shift series in terms of realism. .They were more authentic then something like Dirt but in terms of pure realism RBR was about the only game that could be called a true simulation. Dirt Rally is way more of a sim then the McRea games ever were IMO and even that game doesn't quite reach the realism of RBR.
A true sim can be VERY frustrating to get into. I remember going from the McRea games to RBR and almost giving up. RBR is so hard to control with a gamepad as controlling a real car with a gamepad would be. The McRea games were much easier to play because they were primarily designed to be played with a gamepad.
The damage model in The McRea games was also much more forgiving then In RBR. You really had to drive like an idiot before you totaled the car or even noticed the damage. The handling in Dirt Rally comes really close to the realism in RBR but the damage modeling is still very forgiving.
There is a reason Dirt Rally is the first game in over 10 years to be compared to RBR, it is a great game and feels a lot better on the eyes, but if you want best physics possible I guess
As you said Collin McRae rally racing,from 2007 it turned to dirt a different game and I praise codemaster for doing so dirt 2 was the best game in the franchise cuz it was different for the time and brought a lot of fun sim/arcade driving with authentic roads and amazing graphics but now the game has turned boring again on PC and nobody plays it on PC.Hope they return to dirt 2 and make games like that.
Best releases have to be Dirt Rally, CMR 2.0 and obviously the 1st CMR game. I dont know what they were thinking when they released Dirt Showdown and the "so called" remake of CMR 2.0, terrible mistakes.

Dirt Showdown is simply a spinoff. They communicated this and imo that's fine. It's not a bad game. The remake was a cashgrab. We don't know about the current situation at codemasters (or at least the situation at that time). There were rumors about financial problems. However it's still not ok to release such a game and it probably did some serious damage to the brand. However Dirt Rally pretty much fixed this and is an awesome game, even though it's probably too hard for most people.

They did make some amazing games, but the situation with cheat codes? HORRIBLE. JUST HORRIBLE.

Still remember grinding the championships to marcus gronholms help in the 2nd game gotta be my fave by far, DiRT 3 was good, DiRT Showdown shouldn't exist and DiRT Rally is a current masterpiece, they just need to add more in the future

Still got my copy of the first Colin Mcrae game, in pristine condition. It was the game that got me into racing games/sims.
Dirt 3 was the first one I played, loved it. I love Dirt Rally even more. I even dare say Dirt Rally is more realistic than WRC 3.

I played colin mcrae rally 1 and 2, after that stopped and only now I came back for dirt rally. Got some great memories of 1 and 2. 1 just felt like pure magic with those 3d graphics and colorful sprites, and 2.0 just felt great graphically, though it had lost some of that childhood gaming magic i experienced with the first one :p
the nostalgia really hit me hard here on this one

I played all the mc/dirt rally games, huge disapoint with the Showdown, but the new Rally is just amazing, very realist and the tracks are just an identical copy of real world rcw, fells perfect with the Logitech G27!

DirtRally and 2.0 are the best in whole franchise. First one for realism and second one for enormous fun of driving

The series fully redeemed itself through Dirt Rally, in my opinion. Dudebros and fans of brainless American 'entertainment' can play Dirt Showdown, fans of the original will flock to Rally. Everybody happy!
Showdown is the best example of developers having to follow trends in fear of losing its audience. It was the worst game made from such a prestigious line of games. When the developers saw it, they definitely reverted to the golden age-style gameplay. Nothing will beat 2005 in my opinion.
IMO the only issue with Rally is how you basicly can't play it with keyboard like good ol' CMRs. They could do something like arcade and simulation steering IMO

The graphics, the balanced physics (in the sense of arcade-ish vs realism) the soundtrack, the feeling? and enviroment.
And Dirt Rally as the best simulator I'd say. Sharp, dry, cold blooded, hardcore, unforgiving.

For the original series, first game is obviously special, second game fleshed out the first, third game was a great 6th gen debut with added atmosphere from the cutscenes, fourth game dialed back the atmosphere but stayed true with the content, again with the fifth game.
For the DiRT series, the first game is the closest experience to the originals and provides the best content for the rallying disciplines it covers, the second game was a step back gameplay wise but had a bitchin' soundtrack and great atmosphere, the third game is the best looking and built upon the second in some places but took away in others, and we don't speak of Showdown. Except for the first game, they suffer from the dreadful early EGO engine, but all of them suffer from 30fps and more simplified physics than the originals. DiRT Rally might just get the franchise back on track.

When you see how much wider the tracks used to be in the Collin McRea games it's hard to deny those were more like arcade racers then anything else. I had great fun with them though. Dirt Rally is a true departure for the series. It's filling the hole RBR has created. It's not quit there yet when it comes to realism but just looking back at the series it definitely is a major change.
I think they have to go full on realism with their next iteration. They can still make it so people can tone it down but they shouldn't be afraid to have a uncompromising mode. Maybe there can be room for a more arcade-like title as well. I would love another Dirt-2 like game that offers more in the way of spectacle. Just don't try to make one title that tries to cater to both because usually the sim part get's butchered in the proces

It's not, it's actually an awesome third person action game aimed for a more mature and grown audience. It's the grittier and darker version of batman but in a video game which is really awesome.

mcrae 2.0 was so awesome it even had splitscreen from same keyboard to play , and the 2005 one could be played 4 players splitscreen on same keyboard ! so fun man expecially when one of your friends is laughting while crashing the car and the spit comes out of his mouth .

CMR - never played, however I've got this in my collection
CMR 2 - it was good for it's times, entertaining with variety of cars and tracks
CMR 3,04,2005 - for me all these games were the same, similar tracks, similar set of cars, 2005 was the best IMO
Dirt - my fav for long time, variety of cars (Rally trucks!) and tracks, however career piramide was to repetive (same tracks, different difficulty).
Dirt 2 - never played
Dirt 3 - okayish but too repetive with uneccessary modes (someone needs to bury that gymhana abberation)
Dirt Showdown - never played
CMR 2 remaster - never played
Dirt Rally - very good and challenging, however got the same set of cars like Dirt 3 (e.g. 60's cars are Mini, Fulvia and Alpine)

I actually replayed a lot of old rally games and after playing DiRT and CMR 05, 3 just looks like nothing. It looks like some sort of dubstep monkey game instead of rally game. I hate physics in it. It looks like after strong McRae backbone since first DiRT there hasn't been a good game until 4th one. Gymkhana and stuff like that is, I dunno. It could be not there and I wouldn't miss it. The series just kinda had identity problems. We all remember what Showdown was, at best something that rarely anyone understood or at worst a pile of crap. At the era of DiRT 2 and 3 physics were very poor. They neither were arcade or realistic, they just were shoddily made. Before DiRT series CMR games had great arcedeish physics and since DiRT 1 franchise became more like sim. 2, 3 and showdown were exceptions, but every other DiRT is trying to be realistic. At the time of Dirts 2 and 3, WRC games or even Sega Rally Revo might have been interesting games to play, but before that era and after that era, the series absolutely dominate as de facto off-road racing games.

How could you get such high-quality graphic for CMR2?
What I didn't like about Dirt 3 was that you can't buy anything but just unlock cars. The races/stages are not that varied and are repeating too much. In the long run the campaign gets boring pretty quick. But it seems that Dirt 2 has a "real" campaign with buyable cars, upgrades etc. so I'm interested in it. But what I really liked about Dirt 3 was the gymkhana events.
