- A playthrough of Sunsoft's 1990 license-based action game for the NES, Gremlins 2: The New Batch.
Here's a Halloween pick for anyone that would prefer a more western-oriented experience than my other upload for today, Ghost Sweeper Mikami, provides.
What a fantastic game this is. I remember being so excited when this came out. My parents took my sister and I to see the movie opening weekend, and since we liked it so much, they ended up grabbing the NES game for us. The cinematics, especially for us kids, were a real high point - it was an NES game that had scenes that actually resembled those from the movie.
The game feels like it was built was on an upgraded version of the code base that Fester's Quest ran on. The graphics are similar, but the more linear, constrained level layouts pave the way for a much better level of detail and animation, and the controls have the same sense of weight, but Gizmo can move and shoot in eight directions and his weapons can pass through walls.
And as is typical of later Sunsoft NES games, the music is utter amaze-sauce. The OP talents of Kodaka and Hara shine once again in what is, in my opinion, one of the best soundtracks on the console. Those bass samples slap.
Don't be fooled by how cute it is though. It is Sunsoft, and its difficulty level certainly reflects that. The first three areas aren't so bad, but from 4-1 onward, the kiddie gloves are off, and if you don't know when to anticipate upcoming enemies, Gizmo is going to meet a brutal end.
It seems that for every LJN or THQ turd based on a movie or show for the NES, Sunsoft or Capcom had a counter-example that showed how good such a game could truly be if given enough care and effort.
This is one of the brightest examples of how to do something based on a license. It's a game that's hard not to love.

One of sunsoft's best soundtracks
The best sunsoft soundtrack Journey To Silius
@@johngavalas74 Oh yeah. I'd say that ties with mr gimmick
and Spy Hunter!
Amazing soundtrack
I will add that the Gremlins 2 Gameboy game they did has great music too. That's the one I had as a kid.
"To survive the war, you gotta become war"
Here's the other licensed pick I thought would make for a good look today, and it's right up there with the rest of Sunsoft's greats on the NES.
My favorite NES game.
This is a really good nes game
One of my faves in all the NES library. The soundtrack is so great too. Happy Halloween!
The item/pause screen for this game is awesome. Gizmo standing amongst palm trees holding his weapon of choice. The pogo stick invincibility is great too.
2 Halloween-themed uploads in one day?! You spoil us NC!
Legitimately my favourite movie, even today. Needless to say this was a frequent rental as a kid.
My favorite scene is when the high intellectual gremlin is on the talk show and hes going on and on about how all the gremlins want is civilization and all it's benifits. Then a low iq gremlin interrupts interview with a propeller hat on. The high iq gremlin nonchalantly turns to him and pulls out gun and shoots him in the face. Then he turns back to camera and says casually "now you see that wasn't civilized, entertaining Yes, civilized No"
I do not share your sentiments here. I loved the first Gremlins film. It was equal parts funny as it was terrifying. That scene with them hiding in the Christmas tree with knives waiting for Billy's mother was pure nightmare fuel for a 7 year old. The bar scene where we learn that Gremlins can operate firearms was also a whoa moment. That damn chainsaw...Billlllyyyy...
The second film was just...the director/writers tried to make Gremlins 2 a comedy above all else. By doing so they murdered the franchise. There is no part in the second film that comes close to the conflict and levels of drama the first hits.
Addendum- My fiancee is 10 years younger than me and she missed so many great films/games. She started gaming with the PS2 for example. I am slowly rectifying this problem. This past Halloween we watched both Gremlin films back-to-back and there just isn't any comparison. I'm asking you as an adult to try watching them like I did again and I'm sure you will see what I'm talking about.
@@Sinn0100 You sound controlling. Like you are forcing your fiancée to see things because you are mad she is 10 years younger than you and didn't grow up when you did. Then you are trying to alter someone's opinion because it is their favorite movie and not yours. Meanwhile he never knocked the first one at all just stated the 2nd one is his favorite movie maybe due to nostalgia and the memories it brings him as a kid. I hope you have a lot of money to make that young girlfriend of yours happy because personality wise got some work to do there with social skills and how to relate and communicate with people.

None of what you suggest is even remotely close to what I typed or a reality. You sound like you're single and projecting some inadequacies there buddy. Oh but hey, you do you.
Gremlins 2 rules.
This is my favorite Sunsoft game and one of the best NES soundtracks. Being able to play as the beloved Gizmo is so great. I saw Gremlins 2 at a drive-in…those were the days.
Прекрасна гра, геймплей та музика одні з найкращих на NES
The pixel art is top notch. Gizmo is so cute in both game and cutscenes. I see they put a real effort into this gem.
This game was AWESOME back in the day but couldn’t beat it without The Game Genie. Seeing this game brought back memories not only for the game but the Movie itself.
Such a great NES game -- one of the few I was able to play all the way through, back in the day. Great adaptation of the movie and terrific soundtrack. Sweet memories of playing this game with my oldest child when he was just a little guy.
The music is a toe tapper. The cutscenes are really great artwork, too.
Truly among the greatest moving picture-based games ever forged. Amazing it exists on so primitive a mortal contraption.
Show respect. The NES was mind blowing.
@@XX-sp3tt Only when the programmers weren't being lazy.
7 people made this gem at the time. Geniuses
You're totally right about there seemingly being one good licensed game for every bad one at this time. I roll my eyes whenever some puke on the internet casually states "all licensed games suck" or something like that when I remember it being pretty even handed. The internet really does a great job of demonstrating that if something is funny then that means it's true.
Sunsoft makes another fantastic NES title!
This game is amazing but hard as balls though. Sunsoft knew how to make good games and OSTs back then.
Yea for me it was hard lol
Really, I found this one to be quite easy
Just here to thank you for the years of amazing play through content and that your enthousiasm and personal anecdotes really bring charm to your videos. Thank you!🎉
And thank you, that's really a kind thing to say :)
@@NintendoComplete You are welcome! I think it's well deserved 🙂
I LOVE this game! Gremlins 2 is _awesome._ It's one of my favorite NES games of all time. Sunsoft were a great developer throughout the era, making some really enjoyable and innovative games with a noticeable style shared between each of their works. In that way, I like to think of them as sort of the Treasure of the 8-bit era. It helps that they had a fondness for shooting-type games. This and Batman are two great examples of licensed games done with heart. ...Although I'm very nostalgia-biased for Gizmo's adventure. As a long-time fan of the Gremlins movies, I just can't get over this game. An 8-bit masterpiece!
A 3D platformer on the NES? Amazing!
Well, if the jumping is enough of a dimension. After watching more, I’m realizing that the levels are 2D data (like Doom!)
They look so cute reminds me of my pet hamsters😌😌
I bought this , loved this , beat it , music was incredible
Made me love the movie even more
Listen to Indifference by Deaths Dynamic Shroud. It samples it
Once again, another top notch NES soundtrack from Sunsoft.
I really miss my childhood 😢
Loved this game. Gizmo is so adorable and the soundtrack is fire
Another case of a excellent movie licensed game, but boy is it hard. In typical SunSoft fashion early levels are like a tutorial to make you get used to how the game plays, and then kicks the difficulty to high gear when you reach the final stages.
I remember seeing the film in the cinema( I was 10 years old in 1990 ) and it was an absolute riot. And yes, the audience reaction was priceless when the film "broke"!
This game was pretty good for its time although it did feel like the brutal parts of the most evil of Zelda dungeons. Stranglely enough, I got G2 and Zelda 2 both for Christmas one year and I can honestly say that they both turned me into a damn good gamer; I beat them both but not after getting my ass kicked so many times! You have to pay your dues!
Your playthrough is as relentless as the game itself. Well played!
Love to see someone in his 40s who go here to share his Favorite Videogame Memories in Childhood. Hope your live is fine in this nowadays Madness.
@@eccentricky6170 Thank you for your kind words. To be fair every era has it's madness, but also it's wonders. The 90s was probably the worst decade I experienced, but there was still good times to be enjoyed.
Take care of yourself. Cheers.😎
I remember completing this at a friends house when I was 14.. I’m 47 now😂
I was 7, I’m 41 now. And this game is still impressive to my eyes. And the music was/ is even better
I remember playing this game on the NES
and Amiga 500.
The NES version of this game is a lot easier than the Amiga 😹😸👍🕹️.
I mean, Sunsoft created an awesome movie tie-in.
And by the way... Happy Halloween 🎃🦇🕷️
from Vantaa, Finland 🇫🇮.
😺👍🕹️
Avoid the giant tomatoes!🍅
Seen the first movie, but not the second. Never played this game, either. But it looks like Sunsoft made yet another quality NES game. The graphics are really good and that soundtrack is especially great.
É um ótimo jogo
E as cutcenes são boas também
One of my favorite games of all time next to Batman and Monsters in my Pocket
this is a fan favorite and a classic love this game
The music in this game is fire!
Very Nice game!
Cheers from Brazil
Konami and Capcom were my favorite developers as a kid looking back at all the games I loved from them on the Gameboy and Super Nintendo (i didn't have much on the NES outside of Tecmo Bowl to have have child nostalgia) but Sunsoft is right there. Had a few solid sunsoft games on gameboy.
This game terrified me as a kid. Couldnt make it past the first level lol
Awesome video.
Funny how the artstyle is an asset copy of the Blaster Master boss stages. Sunsoft at its purest. :-)
This, Super Spy Hunter, Batman Return of the Joker. Sunsoft was making NES techdemos hard
I couldn’t beat the last level when I was 9, now I finally see the end of the game 👏
Wow gremlins 2 yes
Memories... 😊
I had no idea this movie had a video game.
I want to play it ☺️
this is what you call a good game
This game is very faithful to the movie as the levels are based around the Clamp tower. Along with the cutscenes, even though I wish Daffy was a boss in this game which stinks he’s limited to the cutscenes, Mr. Wing who you buy items from in the game is dead at this point in the movie & was Gizmo’s original owner before Billy found him again, and lastly Gizmo only fought Mohawk in the movie the others were killed by the human characters throughout the movie including the Electric Gremlin.
Man I was so bad at games then I can’t even remember making the first boss 😂
I had this game as akid. Could never beat it, however. Was too damn difficult. But honestly... what kind of office building would have spikes, rotating spikes, gap drop off points, fire, and even lava laying on all its levels?
20:20 the platforming with the enemies is so infuriating there. Definitely would want a balloon for it
Good times
1st boss 09:07
2nd boss 13:22
3rd boss 18:08
final boss 20:36
The T.V. Set Stage (Stage 3) sounds like it's been taken right out of Batman: Return of Joker.
The only really good movie games I ever played were from Sunsoft. Batman and Gremlins 2 were big surprises when I rented them back in the day. Usually movie games are beyond terrible. Home Alone was the worst NES game ever made. LJN games were complete trash.
Gremlins 2 was not only good but it was fun and original. It had good graphics and I really liked the gameplay and mechanics. It didn’t feel like a manufactured clone of another game. It was unique. Not only impressive for a movie game but just a really good game.
21:38 -> Mr Gimmick inspiration
first time seen this
That Game Over Screen scares me, though. Unlimited continues and a password system FTW, though! How can you pass all that up, is anyone's guess.
Damn.
I wish there was a new improved Gremlins game😈🎮🤞

What happened to Bat Grimlin?
He made an appearance as a boss in the Gameboy version of Gremlins 2
Ele preso da pena
I hated the second Gremlins film with a blind passion. The first movie had equal parts humor and pure horror. The Gremlins were evil, mean, vicious, and scared me to death at 7 years old. That scene with them hiding in the Christmas tree with those orange eyes and knives was pure nightmare fuel. Nothing in the second film comes even close.
Which is why I never wanted anything to do with the game. I also had the displeasure of playing a Gremlins game on an Atari something and I hated it almost as bad as the second film. Unfortunately, I missed out on Gremlins 2 for the Nes. I honestly think it is the best looking retail release game ever made. They even nailed the film segments on an Nes cart! It's like what am I even seeing?! ;)

the movie was garbage the game is garbage 🗑️🗑️
You’ve gotta love how these NES movie games have literally nothing to do with the movie lol
I think this one is remarkably faithful to the source material. The film is equally incoherent.
@@fivespot83s24 Lmao well said
The games were so generic and shitty back then
