Okay, did a bit of digging. Apparently when there wasn't the amount of mics for The Eminem Show that was appropriate (as Eminem wanted ) in the Source, Eminem was acting ... let's say a bit bitchy. When Benzino wanted to have an interview with him about 8 Mile, Eminem ignored him and so Benzino on a radio-interview did a freestyle where he dissed Eminem. I think (if I get the timing right) at some point here, Paul Rosenberg called Benzino trying to squash the beef. In an interview (mentioned below!) Eminem said it was Paul's idea because Paul's the sensible one. Honestly - I believe him 😁. But Benzino claims it was the other way round, that Eminem made Paul call.
Following that,Benzino released diss-tracks called "Pull your skirt up" and "I don't wanna", which prompted Eminem to put out four tracks ("Invasion", "The Sauce", "Nail in the Coffin" and "Welcome to Detroit") and on that aforementioned interview on Hot 97 (you can listen to that on youtube - it's cool!) he dissed Benzino and called him a girl and "worst rapper ever"
Now Benzino got pissed and put out two more tracks, "Die another day" and "Better lose yourself" where he threatened Hailie's life ("Tell Hailie it ain't safe no more, Daddy better watch her back at the candy-store" ) and probably also Eminem's. Maybe also Kim's? I don't wanan read the song-lyrics, honestly, but there was a compilation about the beef on yt and tho lyrics left me speechless! They were *nasty-nasty*!
So, radio-stations weren't playing Benzino's songs anymore at that point (possibly because of his threats? Idk the real reason) and he uses The Source to start throwing dirt on Eminem, who 'switched over' to XXL-magazine which gave him a cover story (resulted in a feud between Source and XXL - good ol' times!!!). At this point, Ja Rule gets into the melee because he is on good terms with the Source and hates 50ct. So we had Shady Records vs Murder Inc and I think Aftermath (Dre) was involved in there, too but on a different level (Dre vs Suge Knight) and ... whatever, too complicated!
Benzino and Ja get together and diss-track-battle Eminem together (also 50, of course) and at the end of 03, somehow they get their fingers on that Foolish Pride-track and do a hit-piece about his character, but it misses (they had him in a scope but only grazed him 😉) and there's a bit more back-and-forth and last diss-track from Eminem is "I'm gone" with Obie Trice and lastest-last is "Like Toy Soldiers" (which you should react to, after the Video "Mama said knock you out" by LL Cool J 😉 😁)
At one point in there, Proof gets jumped in Florida by a few guys and Benzino claimed it was him who did that/ordered that. True? Idk 🤷♂️ But he said he did on one of the tracks.
Apparently years later, Benzino kind of apologized. I don't know what happened after that for him to start ranting in a car, but time hasn't been too good with him, I guess.
Sorry for the rant. But it's fun to dig into these things and you doing these reactions makes me want to really get out the shovel and understand the stuff!

1) Somewhere during all of this, Benzino was trying to get some of Em's tracks pulled off the radio because Benzino thought that Em making "jokes/references" to Michael Jackson's legal problems was "going too far".
2) Benzino also tried to get Russell Simmons to have Def Jam pull ALL support from both Aftermath AND Em, going so far as to support the effort to pull tracks off the radio and STOP possible "collabs" between anyone working with Def Jam and Aftermath. This means that Benzino was trying to work "behind the scenes" to have a massive negative impact on a lot of people's careers at the time.
3) Benzino also used the Source as a means to promote "Made Men", a group connected to Benzino, as well as using Em on the cover to sell issues, but the articles ABOUT Em in those issues were negative articles or interviews.
4) Em released "Toy Soldiers" basically letting the ENTIRE rap community know that Em was not interested in continuing to get involved or use "beefs" to make tracks. That it was having a "negative impact" on him personally, AND on the rap community overall because of the number of rappers getting shot or beaten over "beefs" that made little or no sense. Or worse, getting killed for simply being a supporter of one rapper over another. After "Toy Soldier" came out, Benzino released yet another diss track (Sorry, can't remember the name of this track) where he calls Em a coward and "scared to respond". (Personally, if someone is making a very public statement like a track on a LP basically saying "This is hurting ALL of us, so I'm going to step back from this sort of activity", I don't think that the proper response would be to call that person a "coward". It should be pointed out that this became the period of time where Em didn't do "diss tracks". He may say one or two things in a single verse, but NOT the entire track.)
5) Benzino was putting so much pressure on Russell Simmons and Def Jam, that OUT OF ANGER, Def Jam pulled ALL advertisement from the Source, pretty much sealing the deal in regards to Benzino being removed by the magazine's investors because it was costing the company a LOT of money without ad-revenue.
This isn't remotely accurate... those of us that saw it in real time get it.
@@herrzimm Oh, thank you for this update! I did shorten it a bit, I know, because I checked two sources and they were contradicting here and there and then I put as much of the provable facts into it as I could. I didn't want to check even more sources - was feeling quite nerdy already 😉 😄
I also read somewhere that the original mic-amount from the Source had only been two and then they changed it to four, but since I couldn't find anything about it, I didn't put it in.

@@ToneyReactions 3 mics was what he usually got from the Source so he was used to that, it was when they gave Dr Dre's the Chronic less mics than Em thought Dre deserved that Em really went off on the Source with the diss track The Sauce, and he dug into them, exposing all their dirt, opening the Hip Hop community's eyes to the bias that was at the Source at that time, basically ruining their credibility by exposing their own actions, the Source had the writers walk out at least once due to it, and two different Chief Editors quit during the time Mays and Benzino were in charge there due to mics being changed, Benzino at one point claimed he was being bought out and leaving the Source, but never really did, at least not until both Mays and Benzino were forced out, after they were forced out the Source eventually went back and addressed the mic issues from that time, changing a number of ratings on albums
