0:30- “Attention... This is a test of the Norwood Park Fire Protection District’s Early Warning System for Norridge, Harwood Heights, and Norwood Park Township. This is ONLY a test.” For those who can’t make out the voice.
Ahhh that's what it said. I was out side when they started voice and all I could make out was. a test I've never heard these sirens go off before until today
When the siren head is facing away from the camcorder the voice is really quiet, I was expecting it to be louder for some reason, probably because in so many other siren test videos I've seen there's little volume difference when the siren faces away from the camera compared to when it's pointing at the camera. Does the siren send a command back to the control station to tell the controller that it's finished playing the message or rotating?
ChicagoSirens; Do harwood heights IL has a Whelen WPS-2910 the same voice or just all Whelen WPS-4004? Because I was thinking Harwood Heights has a Whelen 2910 but if not just whelen 4004
Nice video! That's a good 4004. There are some sirens heard in the beginning prior to the voice activating. Also, it sounds like there is an ACA Allertor or a dual-toned penetrator sounding and winding down while the 4004 is sounding. Do you hear that too?
+John Porter That's the nearby Chicago 2001. It has dying batteries so it's low toned. It could also be Elmwood Parks Allertor, but I'm pretty sure it's the 2001.
Are these automated or manually operated sirens? What I mean is are they turned on and automated for dialup, rotation and siren, or is there a crew operating each siren?
All outdoor warning siren systems in one system are typically activated from a central location, all at once. In systems I've seen, they're activated by a person, but a Whelen system like the one you see here, is sort of a combination of automatic and manual. In this case, a person designated to run the system pushes a button, called a "hot-key", on a console called an encoder. The encoder will automatically put out the DTMF command strings at the programmed time intervals and automatically reset the system and itself. So in short, in the case of this Whelen system, a person has to activate it but it does it's thing and resets itself.
Real interesting. Also neet that it works on DTMF. So are these things hooked to a phone sistem of some sort? I've experienced DTMF because I have a device for the blind since I'm blind called a Voice Mate. The Voice mate uses it to call people for you. On the new cordless phones it doesn't work though. What's the SPL of this thing?
StarKin TH-cam What are you talking about? This is a 4000 series head. In the 1990's the change from the older models with the X in the screen to this type of head was made. This is what all 4000 series sirens look like now.

It does look a lot like a Thunderbolt, except more rectangular in shape. Grew up with the Thunderbolts. Sounds similar to it, but still more like a pissed off vaccum.

I can make out the voice because I saw another one of these sirens test saying the same thing doing thing
Reading and listening to that, it sounds like one of the sirens in the siren system of the wps-4004 receiving bad DTMF codes.
It is very hard to understand because Whelens voice messages are not clear to me and the echo makes it hard.

Yes, used to live in HH for a long time. another version of the same whelen is near the school called Union Ridge
+Chrome4fan4 Since you lived in Harwood Heights for a long time, do you remember any other sirens installed before these versions?
no, some are old air raid ones on firehouses. not activated though
+Chrome4fan4 But none in Harwood Heights right?
yeah, any other sirens that are not whelen are in niles, morton grove, and norridge, all have either a federal signal or an air raid

What do the dial tones mean?
Dial tones control the siren. They tell it to rotate and do voice and or tones.
DTMF tones

+IllinoisSirens Norwood Park Fire Dept. actually uses three different frequencies. One for voice, and one for tone. The other is for warnings.
Oh wow. That's a pretty unique setup. Where I live they do the whole thing on the Public works frequency. Bucom sets up their systems strangely.
also, why is the first chain not the standard 10 digit format?
