  • Please confirm with your manual which fluid you need. Fluid requirements may change over time. Video is a maintenance suggestion.
    In this video I show you how you can service your own Honda Ridgeline or Honda Pilot in the transmission fluid change. I have a 2018 Honda Ridgeline rtle which I will be doing the service on.
    (Now I only did one drain but its recommended that you do this 3.3 QT drain, fill, drive flush 3 times.)

    Excellent detailed ATF d&f DIY. I think when I get to it for the first time I'm just going to do a simple fluid d&f and skip the filter. I'm a senior, and I suspect skipping that part will make it much easier for me.

    Great video, thank you! You made it look easy and gave me the confidence to tackle this. I've done a million oil changes and lots of other maintenance and repairs, but automatic transmissions kind of scare me, for whatever reason I don't know.
    Just hit 50k today on my 2019 RTL-E, and it's due for an oil change, the rear brakes just started grinding (pads and rotors are in transit), and I want to do the transmission oil, too. I'm going with Idemitsu H Plus instead of the Honda oil. It was a bit cheaper, I trust Idemitsu, and it meets DW-1 specs. I'll do the filter next time.

    Apparently, the filter is a lifetime filter. It is pretty difficult to get the bracket on/off. Changing the fluid only is still a viable option.

    • @faxmen09
      @faxmen09 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      I don't know about the term "lifetime" for the filter, but fwiw, I do agree changing the fluid alone, a good option.

    • @UMepher
      @UMepher 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      "Lifetime" means long time, but not forever. I have a BMW E46, and they called the manual transmission fluid "lifetime," which actually meant like 100k miles. Like most manuals, it was easy enough to change, so I I did when I bought mine used with a ton of miles. It was a little hard to get into first gear but after I drained the black stuff that looked like ol' Jed's Texas tea crude oil and refilled with the proper Redline (ATF, oddly enough), it shifted like a dream. I understand that this Honda 6-speed is a lot like a manual, so I'm hopeful that keeping the oil clean will keep it shifting properly, and I'm not too ocncerned about the filter. I'm not doing the filter with my 50k d+f but I'll probably do it next time. They're cheap enough from Rock Auto.

    Thx for this great video... I have a '17 RTL-E... i bought it used at 25k... manual says change tranny fluid at 90k... last few months noticed the truck 'surging' when going 30-45 mph... by 'surging', i mean rpm would go up and down and up and down... like its hunting for proper gear. I only have 47k on the truck... Interweb research reveals 3 things:
    1. This is a known prob with the 6 speed trans... Honda has since revised the maintenance sched for trans fluid change every 30k.
    2. There is a service bulletin regrading this TSB 17-026.
    3. Honda used the term 'judder' instead of 'surging'.
    After trans fluid and filter change - no more judder... shifts are smooth.
    Thx again for your great videos!

      I have a 2017 also bought in new in July 2016. On the way home that day I noticed the trans didn’t shift or act right. It only got worse over time. Honda preformed the service bulletin, which was to flush it three times and refill it. It did as good as new for about a year. These trans are junk! Honda can’t seem to build a decent transmission for their larger vehicles.

    My son and I just performed this service on my 2019 Ridgeline six speed transmission. It was pretty straight forward although removing/replacing the filter is a pain in the a$$. I used a 1/4" drive ratchet and deep well 10mm socket for this task. My transmission drained about 4 1/4 quarts of fluid (as measured in an empty anti-freeze jug) so I used all four quarts to refill. When I checked the fluid level after the change, per the instructions at the end of this video, it came up just below the "HOT" mark on the dipstick. Changing the filter requires a little more fluid and I will monitor this level for a few days in case I need to add some. An interesting note; prior to doing this I called my local Honda dealer service department and a certified independent Honda service center to ask about this service. Both places insisted that there was no filter on this transmission with the dealer service rep vehemently insisting I was wrong. The independent guy finally admitted there is a filter. Honda wanted $129.00 to drain and refill 3 qts. of oil, with no filter change and the independent guy would charge $269.00 to drain and refill 3 qts. and change the filter. Honda service recommends only changing the 3 qts. They don't flush these transmissions. Your experience may vary.

      They're incorrect, strictly speaking, but they're actually sort of correct.. sort of. The Honda 6-speed is an odd duck that has more in common with some manual transmissions than most automatics. It doesn't have a typical filter on the pickup tube or whatever in the bottom of the transmission oil pan, which many (most?) other automatics have. That's what I was told anyway. The inline filter you see in this video is unusual.

      Ok so I have been inspecting that and I think my Honda has an oil leak. The boots seem fine. I need to do some thorough work to find out where it’s coming from but until the weather warms up I’m not really interested in working under the truck lol. The truck does have the upgraded cooler as it’s the AWD RTLE model so no “better” OEM is available for me. Next step would be some sort of aftermarket cooler.

    Being that you towed that 3K mile trip and worked the transmission hard my 10¢s, I would drive around a few days and drain and few more days and drain.
    I have a 2017 RTL-T with the six speed and the filter was mounted higher up and it was not fun to reach the mounting bracket bolt and hose clamps. Yours had that tubing connected to the bottom edge of the pan which looked easy to reach, lucky you.
    Also, just yesterday (Sunday) I added the Honda OEM cooler, bit of work, but got it done. Anyways, thanks for your posts 👍

    • @YuriyMotso
      @YuriyMotso  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Through the dipstick I believe. The manual states is 3.3qts but in reality you will need more. I used all 4 qts as I stated at the end of the video but have heard people using as much as 5 qts. I am not sure why this is but this is what is to be expected. If you plan on doing a full flush its recommended that you do this 3.3 qts flush up to 3 times. Drain, fill, drive repeat. Not sure what the distance was but probably a a few miles should do it. maybe even do it between 3 fill ups but again I am not sure what the requirement was if you wanted to do a full flush.

    ZF9 has buttons to shift gears , the transmission plug is on the bottom of the transmission facing the ground and uses different ATF
    6AT still has a handle to shift gears, the transmission plug it’s on bottom but facing the passenger side .

    Great video except for 2 key additions:
    1) cut a ratchet in half! The nut that holds the filter bracket is hard to get at. You can’t see it and have to feel for it. The problem is how to loosen and tighten it. If you take a normal ratchet and socket and get it in the proper spot there is no room to work the ratchet. Out of frustration I took the ratchet to my grinder and chopped it in half! Because of the smaller size you could actually work the ratchet in the small space. I bet every Honda service center has a small ratchet for just servicing transmissions.
    2) 3.3 quarts is crap. Before doing the service I bought 4 quarts of fluid. I drained the old fluid and put back in the plug. I then added the “magic” 3.3 quarts, nothing on the dipstick. I added some more, nothing 🤷‍♂️ I added all 4 quarts and still nothing. I then started making some phone calls. I found out the whole system contains 9 quarts. I had a neighbor take me to an auto shop to get more fluid. It ended up taking 5 quarts.

    • @YuriyMotso
      @YuriyMotso  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Worked pretty well and easily for me honestly. I had almost no issues. Maybe my tools are slightly more sized for the operation.
      In my video I stated that I had to use all 4 Quarts. The 3.3 is the manufacture notation so I stated that as a base line but followed up with the 4qrt notation.
