It’s a tiny little plant for now and I’ve had a lot of trouble getting the seeds to bloom but I’m hoping this species will be able to cope with the colder winters than the ones in Australia, that we have here in Germany. I’ve also planted lemon gum and blue gum seeds and have been very successful with those but of course those can’t be planted outside. The lemon gums have huge lignotubers by now which is just fascinating.
@@joshr24 hey, I guess it’s about 30cm tall. It’s outside in the afternoon autumn sun right now and just swaying a little in the wind. It looks great and has huge leaves and several branches by now. I’ve repotted it once in summer so it had a lot more space to grow. I’m thinking about planting it outside next year already since it’s growing so quickly but I haven’t made up my mind yet.
I’ve planted my flowering gum (fairy floss) in the wrong spot..it’s been planted for approx two months and is only about a metre high...can I relocate it or is that a bad idea?
Hi Emily, Thanks for your question! This is not the ideal time of year to undertake transplanting because of the hot weather and dry soils. Also, the longer the plant is left in the ground the more the roots will establish and the chance of surviving the transplant shock will be reduced. Therefore, it would be desirable to wait until there is a weather forecast for four or five days of temperatures in the low to mid 20°C before undertaking the transplanting. If the new planting site is exposed to strong wind it would also be desirable to install a windbreak to reduce water loss from the plant. Do not feed the plant for at least a month after transplanting. If you'd like to email communications@rbg.vic.gov.au we'll send you more information.
Hi Brad, the recovery from cutting back will depend on which species it is. Some, such as mallee’s may be cut back to ground level and they will resprout, whereas others may be killed outright with cutting back. Do you know what species it is?
This type of eucalyptus produces a lignotuber and will generally re-sprout from the base once you cut it back. If the base of the plant is swollen, ball-like, the stem may be cut off approximately 5mm above the ‘ball’ area and it should still re-sprout if it has a properly developed lignotuber. We suggest that yours should not be planted in the ground due to it's size - make sure it's in a pot to stop the root system from becoming compromised. We hope this helps, Brad!

I have a 7-8' eucalyptus in a pot but its leaning bad, can I cut back central leader so it will grow back stronger trunk?
