- Did Light Wind Riding just become EPIC? I've been lucky enough to ride the NEW GONG XXL wing foils in the Curve, Veloce and Fluid versions. I try to help you understand the big leap in performance, how they did it and what that means for you and the kind of riding you'd like to do.
Hopefully by the end you'll know which one will have you ripping across your spot in your style whilst everyone else is just riding. A HUGE step forward, especially for the bigger riders!

I find it quite hard to judge the size of a front wing nowadays. As you mentioned, usually a 2000cm2 has been the low wind wing, but now with all the different options in aspect ratio and so on it got quite hard to judge. I found out that when you multiply the area of the wing by the aspect ratio, you are getting a number which I think gives you a better understanding of the size of a wing. A front wing with a size of 2000cm2 and an aspect ratio of 5 results in a number of 10000 which seems to be the standard for light wind wings. For example, the new curve has a number of 10880. I was always wondering how people could pump a front wing with just 1000cm2, but most of them have a pretty high aspect ratio of around 10. So if you multiply 1000 by 10 you land at 10000 again, which seems to explain why they are able to do so. Most of the higher wind front wings are around 5000 depending on the wind strength, whilst low wind front wings are around 10000 and pump or as you mentioned no wind front wings are around 15000 and 20000 with the Sirus 5XL being the highest number I’ve seen so far with 62310. Of course there are way more factors to take into account when looking at a foil, but I thought this is quite interesting and I've never heard somebody talk about this before.
That IS really interesting buddy! I also found that volume helps a lot to understand the ability a wing has to carry, but of course that's not really the story, as speed is the source of lift, as well as thickness, and you can have them independent of each other and still have lots of lift! Jumping on your comment :). So basically what you mentioned is simply considering the wing span². Because the definition of the Aspect ratio is actually Wingspan²/(projected surface) (I suppose this is why this is not really mentioned) So for sure that might be informative but I don't know if only considering the wing span might be sufficient (enough let say) to characterize a front wing behavior/use case.
@@brouillard56510 Yeah, that might be the reason. Probably got somewhat lost in all these specs of a front wing. At least it somehow works and gives you another number to get confused by. :D

Thank you! Yes, I did upgrade to the new fuse and stabs - did that quite a while ago, and was very happy with the results. Initially I rode the Veloce v2 XXL with the new Fluid H47 stab, as it really makes it very easy in the light, but recently I've started riding it with the Fluid H45 and this fits really well too, although it's very slightly more technical. But there's more glide and speed, which is what I like the most! To be honest, no matter what front wing you're on, you need to get into the new stab and fuse Pro system. It's a huge upgrade to any of the old front wings. For example, my Curve XLT turned into a totally different wing when I started riding it with the Fluid H47. Much more glide, easier launch, overall so much better. Go for it!

Thanks for an interesting comparison! -But please include the X-Over as well next time! Many of us, now looking at the Curve or Veloce, have started on the X-Over and it's always good to compare the new to something you already know.

Hey buddy... definitely go for the X-Over in XXL with the Pro fuselage, and the X-Over 48 stab. It's a really great foil which offers so much progression and still remains fun even for experienced foilers. I'm actually considering adding one to my home quiver as it's just so much fun to ride and helpful even to experienced riders when they want to learn a new manoeuvre. For the mast, I'd suggest the V2 Aluminium, but buy a 65cm and an 85cm. Taking the 65 as well is not much more investment, and the 65 is much more friendly for the first few sessions. You can ride it in shallower spots, which are typically calmer water and of course you can walk your rig back when you inevitably get blown downwind! I'd suggest a 6m wing at your weight (the PLUS is awesome) and for the boards, take the large Lance if you want a rigid, and the HIPE First if you're after an inflatable. I've ridden both, and they are both great boards. Good sessions buddy and welcome to the ride!
Cheers for the cool explanation. At 65kg I'm looking to replace my old XL surf pro 1900. I'm up and riding but not yet got jibes sorted. Thinking the new curve XL 1400 might suit me. Having heard you using the xxl at your weight, maybe XL is too big for me?

Buddy I've ridden the whole Curve range. You will find it crazy, but even for me, the M v2 is not difficult to get onto foil with a steady wind. So for you, I think you would be really good with the L. Absolutely brilliant foil!
Thanks for the video, If i want to prioritize early take-offs in super light wind (5kn) and had to choose between a cruzader hipe 7'6 with my existing Curve XL (new model) or a Curve XXL (regular or H?) with my existing board (Hipe pro 5'3) - which would you choose?...also would a new stab make a big difference for early takeoff ?( I have the x-over 46cm)
Without any doubt at all, the Cruzader. Until you try it you cannot comprehend the massive impact of this board shape. It’s truly incredible. I would also suggest that you get the Pro fuselage and the Fluid H45 stab 😊 with the Cruz you’ll be using a wing 1m less than normal. I ride on days with almost nothing now and never need anything larger than the Droid Perf 2024 in 6m. Mega mega mega board shape!

Hey Felix… it’s another level entirely. Flies in almost nothing. It’s almost like a different sport! I think to get the most from it, you must take it with a Cruzader. Then it is really incredible.

I am around 97 kg an flying an old xxl curve for light / no windfays . And an xlt as daily foil . Flying on an inland lake . Mostly 12- 20knts.
Very iregular winds . Looking for a new foil o replace de xxl curve , but don’t want to need to buy a titanium fuselage ..
What would you advise . New Curve xxl or curve h xxl
First thing I would say is that you absolutely MUST take the Pro fuselage so that you can start with the Pro stabs. They make a massive difference. If you're looking for a stab with great lift and glide, and fairly relaxed, take the Fluid H47, if you want to focus a little bit more on glide, then the Fluid H45 is great too. Personally, I'd recommend the H45. For the foil, if your budget is stressed by taking the stab and Alu Fuselage as well, then for sure take the new Curve XXL. It will replace and outperform your old XXL AND XLT. The Curve XXLH, I must be honest with you and say that I haven't ridden that, so I can't comment on the effect of the wingspan on handling etc - but I expect that it will be very manageable, based on the other Curve H foils that I have flown. But what I can say is that I have flown the Curve XLH in the conditions you describe, and I am also 97kg and it launches very very well. Although I am on a Cruzader in those conditions, which helps a lot. Soooo my advice... if you want one foil system to do everything at your weight, then I would recommend the Alu Pro fuselage, Fluid H45 stab, Curve v2 XXL... simple way to pick between the H and the regular - if you want to prioritise glide over everything else at this size of wing, take the H... if you want to keep your very low end (slightly better, generally) and a faster rail to rail, then take the regular... and I'm also going to tell you that you really should sell the XLT and get yourself a Curve LH as your 15-20knot wing. It will blow your mind - glide, speed, launch, rail to rail - a dream!

But the strange thing is . I asked the same question to the gong customers service and they said that. I wouldn’t gain much in the low winds with the xxl curve and the xxl h curve in comparison with my old xxl curve en my xlt .
I can understand that answer too. I think that it sounds as if they are specifically referring to launch when talking about "gaining in the light". The old Curve XXL - it's hard to beat the launch on that thing when it has 2800cm! But once it's riding, it's nowhere near the same performance in terms of speed, agility, glide, fun as the new ones. To put it into a context that is perhaps easier to understand... I would say that the Curve XXL v2 launches better than the XLT but once in flight the performance is more like a Fluid XXLS, but with much better glide. To give you an idea, I'm riding the Veloce XXL v2 now - I bought it as a light wind foil to complement my Ypra XLS, but honestly, the performance window is so wide on the top and the bottom end that I'm using it far more than I thought I would. The Curve XXL offers even more at the low end. If you're really wanting to improve your launch performance, then you need to consider a Cruzader. Then you'd be amazing at what you can launch your XLT in... for me, as 97kg with that board, I was launching the Curve M v2 and the Curve MH in around 20knots with the Cruzader and a 5m Neutra RH. Crazy board. But if you're happy with your board and you want to increase your foiling performance, then I am absolutely certain that you'll be blown away by either of those new Curves compared to what you have. Let me know!
Hello , again thanks for the great explanation , you gave me a lot to think about . The cruzader is definitely on my mind , but I am a little bit worried about the stability . It is a big step down from my hipe pro ( 28) wide .
So I guess you're on the HIPE Pro 5'6 or 5'8... I'm on the 5'3 and have the Cruz 7XL. You will tend to use the Cruz in much less chop, so the stability is less of an issue anyway. The key to the Cruz is to get it moving as soon as possible... as soon as it moves, the stability is great. When it is standing still, it is more difficult But, I can also SUP this size at my weight and I'm not an expert in SUP. I have been working on a video on how to get the Cruz moving as early as possible with a variation on the stink bug start. Hope to have that video up within a week or so... You'll have a period of adaption with the Cruz, but for me it was only 2 sessions. It's been the best purchase I've made since I started wingfoil, quite honestly, in terms of sessions gained!
Can you tell something about the max speed of the curve v2? Thanks
Sure - I don’t have numbers but I can tell you it’s not slow. I think they are certainly quicker than the old Fluids, but with better low speed and more glide. Top end is probably comparable to the old Fluid T (but you need to accelerate it consciously to get it there) but they launch sooo much easier and have such great low speed playfulness as well. Hope that helps. But one more thing - take it 2 or 300cm less than the old Fluid T. You’ll still have the low end. That’s the amazing thing. Smaller foil, launches like a big one, but has so much more speed and playfulness.

GONG boards and foils looks good and very innovative but how is the quality compared to other more well known brands? I would like to start buying their gear but I've got a feeling their quality and client service is not up to standard.
My experience has been great. Having visited the HQ and met many of the people I am very certain that they are motivated to do a great job. If you’re skeptical I’d suggest using their chat feature to get some advice from their customer service. If you like it, buy small at first and form your own opinion. Mine has been entirely positive, and to be clear, I’m not paid by them for this 🤙🏻😊 it’s just my experience and opinion this far.
