    This is by far the most detailed and useful video I've seen on mixing vocals and backvocals. If you happen to have a video on vocal harmonies or how to produce backvocals, that would be killer! Keep up the amazing work!!

    Vocals..... are a lot of work. More than any other element of a modern mix I feel like vocals require the tightest editing and automating. I haven’t found any shortcuts to going through them piece by piece and cleaning up every nuance to make them sound professional. Vocals are what 95% of ears are going to be focused on 95% of the time. Love this channel and lots of great tips 🙏

    Wauw, great in depth session, very useful and it's not just putting a vocal to a send with some delay or reverb, so much more to focus on, thx for the insight David, such tutorials are very helpful and as a member I can recommend joining the channel, because the tutorials for members are definitely the money worth it and the mixing consultations are thorough, a huge difference with other channels I was member from, they tell you only what's wrong and do not give alternatives or solutions, with David's evaluation you receive solutions. I take his comments next to my sessions and run through his suggestions and apply them on my production, with result. And at the end that positive vibe this generates, gives the energy to continue with new productions instead of quitting. Slogan: Mixbus TV keeps you on track ! :)

    I notice the ratio on the sidechain compressors for delays and reverbs is set to infinity. Would you use low ratios in different situations or have you generally found high ratios to work better for this? Thank you, David!

    • @mixbustv
      @mixbustv  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      High ratios works better for me for this task with that compressor in that algo, so very specific. Because the way it reacts is very predictable and let me play with the threshold to set the amount of compression I need when I copy it to other tracks.

    CLA said the same about mixing the reverbs, delays etc. with each other. More often than not, I find it takes away from the clarity. Maybe that's due to my taste, maybe it's due to the genres (I don't usually drown vocals in reverb). It's not that I send too much, it's not that I'm forgetting to duck it, it's not that I'm forgetting to filter what's coming in/out. Guess I'll have to try it again until I come across a mix, that needs it.

    Damn that’s similar to what I concluded. Pronunciation is important. Video shoots is second so my hat off to those that provided an album cover alone. The unique Canadian stuff is massively engineered. Brutal but no identity. I think 2020 productions show the best elements in metal the recording engineers and the drummers

    One Question : Putting Reverb and/or Delay in a track push back the Vocals in the mix . So if you want to put a lot of effects in the vocals ( and want to have this in front of the mix) , you should push the others instruments back in the mix (too) and that is my problem. Because by doing that , suddenly your beat ( and drums) seem detached to the whole mix ( vocals + instruments) ...
    And here you go , you try to put reverb on percs & some drums and even sometimes the kick ( hipass the reverb) .
    But by doing that , your mix sounds lifeless , no more energy ...

    • @HyperNova137
      @HyperNova137 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm a noob myself and someone else can surely give you a better response, but here's my initial thoughts: That CAN happen if you overdo it, but if you're using sends, you're not really pushing anything back; the delays -- and to a lesser extent, the reverbs -- can be thought of almost as a separate instrument of their own (because unless you're putting your reverb plugins right on the vocal tracks, they pretty much are separate tracks), which add depth and dimension to the main track... They're basically filling up what would otherwise be empty space, almost like adding a pad instrument in the background, which the lead vocal still rides on top of. In the case of drums, you could maybe just double it up with some parallel compression to bring everything back up front.

    • @mixbustv
      @mixbustv  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Mastering the use of verbs and delays is the absolute holy grail of mixing, so, not easy.

    • @mago97615
      @mago97615 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mixbustv Yes i know , and thank you for this useful video . I was just trying to know , what to do , if you want your vocal "in front" of the mix , but at the same time , have some reverbs with delays (in a gentle way) without pushing it back . even if we use auxilaries , using reverbs and delays trick your brain , and you have the feeling that the voice is going back (deeply) on the mix . That's strange since with the send , you give some "wet effect" to the dry signal , i don't know how to do . Also , cutting the Hi (or doing a high shelf by reducing the highs) in a reverb , make the vocal going even back in the mix .... If we don't eq the highs , the vocals seems more upfront the listener , but clean "less" .

    that's a beautiful video..you teach us nice things. My biggest problem is how to mix a bass for metal...I don't understand anything how I should make the sound of my bass. If you find it interesting please show us. I use Parallax from Neural but I can't understand how I should make the bass sound....!!!!!!!

    • @kylecalandrelle7209
      @kylecalandrelle7209 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can split the bass into a few tracks. Pull what you want from each then buss them together. There's vids on TH-cam. I usually do like a di then parallax then like a low/ mid fuzz. pretty heavy compression on the buss or just the lows depending on the performance or what your going for. I'm by no means a pro but I get some gnarly bass tones. Try it out for yourself. You want the lows to be solid and the mids/ highs to grind and jangle a bit.🤘
