You should check out their earlier work as The English Beat. "Mirror in the Bathroom" "Tears of a Clown" and "Monkey Man" (edit: sorry that is The Specials) are great tracks, "Tears" being a cover of a Smokey Robinson song.
The lead singer is Dave Wakeling. He is still touring. The gentleman singing backup up is Ranking Roger. Unfortunately, Roger passed away a couple years ago. As others have mentioned, their original band was the English Beat. Definitely worth checking out! The English Beat did a cover of Smokey Robinson's "Tears of a Clown" which might be a great place to start.
From what I read Dave has been touring with a band as the English Beat again. Always loved this song and it's still on my playlist to this day, along with another one of my favorites from them called Limited Balance, which was a popular party song in Trinidad in the 80s. RIP Ranking Roger.
Yeah, they're playing this song live as well. Had a dream come true and got to open for them, and they are insanely great people. The lyrics on this song are often overlooked, but some of my favorites: "words, like conviction, can turn into a sentence", "my luck's like a button, can't stop pushing it"
The English Beat is definitely worth a dive. Can't get much better than "Save it for Later," but also "Two Swords" is another good song with lyrics that hit home today.
It was one of those songs in the early 80s that had the 80s sound, 80s hopefulness and, while it wasn't a mega-hit, it was one of those pleasant sing-along songs that provided the background soundtrack of the decade. Everybody loved it.
it was my favorite song of '85 and, if i remember correctly, it took the number one spot for the year on l.a.'s radio station KROQ. i think that happened. i don't think i just wished it, lol.
General Public plus Fine Young Cannibals = One of my favorite bands - The English Beat ♥ Save It For Later, Tears of a Clown, Mirror in the Bathroom, Too Nice to Talk To, Doors of Your Heart, Jeanette, Twist & Crawl, Can't Get Used to Losing You, March Of The Swivel Heads.
To be specific, the bassist and guitarist of The (English) Beat went on to form the Fine Young Cannibals with Roland Gift, while Dave Wakeling and Ranking Roger formed General Public
One Of The Godfathers Of Ska Music,, When First Released In The U.S.,, People Didn't Know What It Was,, Only That They Loved It,, Desmond Dekker & The Aces "Israelites"..A MUST HEAR Classic.
J & Amber, you'll love the English Beat's "Save It For Later" and "I Confess". The English Beat preceded General Public, had the same members/singers Dave Wakeling and Ranking Roger. I believe I saw the English Beat open for the UK band Squeeze in November 1982.
Yes, been begging for some English Beat, but this will suffice for now. Would love for them to do some Squeeze, too! IMO this side of the ‘80s is a bit more sophisticated and the songs are still as fresh today as they were back then.
Forgot about this! New wave band. Definitely dance music. Check out their other video "Never You Done That". I was so young, a child, when they were around, '80s. lol They had members of punk, ska bands like The Clash and The Specials. Part of The English Beat, if I recall.
Tenderness is featured in the 1990 teen comedy “CLUELESS” . Sweet. Funny. Has high school clicks, and lots of teenage lingo. Like As if, a Betty, Crushing, Space Cadet.
"Tenderness" peaked #27 on Billboard Pop chart & #15 on the Dance chart. First charted in Nov. 1984 into early 1985. More of an alternative rock station hit than Top 40. KROQ here in LA played it in heavy rotation.
Kroq had the best djs. Richard Blade, Jerry the Fish, Rodney on the Rock, Poor man and many others who played the best songs. Richard Blade introduced me to The Alarm, who I love to this day. Too bad it's gone down hill since then.
Stewart - not to be annoying, but it was Jed the fish. Also the Swedish Eagle, Poorman, Ramondo (before Poorman) the virgin Kennedy, Jimmy Kimmel also started as the sports guy on KROQ (1990s though). KROQ was a force back in the day. Who remembers MV3 with Richard Blade?
Rick Carroll was the main reason why KROQ was so influential - and brought a whole host of foreign bands (mainly UK) into the American music scene. Depeche Mode, The Smiths, everything Ska and a bunch of other stuff. It seems absolutely impossible for a radio station today to curate music in that way, and let DJ's pick major parts of their playlist....but that era was magic
This was part of the second British Invasion. Have you guys checked out ABC yet? They were awesome "Poison Arrow" , "When Smokey Sings" and my personal favorite "The Look of Love"
Song was used in the 80s movie 'Weird Science' where the Porsche 928 (forget who was driving) takes one of girls home, sadly not released on the original soundtrack
Loved this song. Check out their predecessor group The English Beat.... "Mirror in the Bathroom"... "Twist and Crawl".... "End of the Party".... "Save It for Later"... "I Confess".... Prime 80s! I'm gonna jump in the car and crank some English Beat right now!

Great suggestions, however I have to make the point that "Pressure Drop" and "Monkey Man" were first recorded by the reggae band Toots & the Maytals. Toots Hibbert is credited, in fact, with coining the term "reggae". The band has many hits, such as the ones previously mentioned, plus "54-46 Was My Number", "Funky Kingston", and lots more. On Toots's 2005 (?) album called True Love, he remade "Monkey Man" with No Doubt. Keith Richards also makes an appearance on the song "Careless Ethiopians". I love me some Bob Marley, but it's time for J & A to expand on their reggae repertoire and check out Toots & The Maytals, Jimmy Cliff, Lucky Dube (I could go on). :)
@@beverly_310 I Am MORE Than Aware Of All Of That & Could Add To It With Desmond Dekker,, Jacob Miller,, Etc..I Agree With You & I Have Suggested ALL Of Them Before As Well.
Their original group was The English Beat aka The Beat and they have some great, great songs. "Save It For Later"," I Confess" "The End Of The Party", "Stand Down, Margaret", "Mirror In The Bathroom". General Public has another great hit in "Never You Done That". The English Beat also was the original group for 2/3 of Fine Young Cannibals just fyi. And there is nothing like the sax sound on the English Beat records by Saxa, their sax player.
go into a Tommy Hilfiger, Gap, or Anthropology - and there is a better than average chance Never You Done That will come on every now and then...there is someone, somewhere our age....who refuses to let that song go - and I am glad they think that way
My favorite song from General Public was "Hot You're Cool" from the same year as this, 1984. (And I also thought lead singer Dave Wakeling's voice could have been brought up more in the mix. It sounds too breathy to me.)

Another long day at work, so it's always a treat to get home and see your new reactions. I hope I made somebody smile today the way you both make all of your followers smile every day. Thanks.
I knew that I heard this song but the group, I could not place. So, I did a google search and it was in a couple of teens rom- coms that I loved. Since you guys have the movie channel up, here is few to consider... "Weird Science", and "Sixteen Candles;" both were part of the Brat Pack, and "Clueless."
The Brat Pack refers to a group of young actors that made a lot of hit movies in the 80's. Included in the pack was ...Rob Lowe, Emilio Estevez, Anthony Michael Hall, Judd Nelson, Demi Moore, Molly Ringwald, Ally Sheedy, and Andrew McCarthy; but these are not all of the members. Movies includes... Sixteen Candles, St. Elmo's Fire, Weird Science, The Breakfast Club, Pretty In Pink, The Outsiders, About Last Night. These actors appeared in these movies but in different combos. They ruled the 80's teen scene. Good grow up movies, coming of age stories. But your girls are not ready for these...rated PG-13.
Really do appreciate your Channel and a different variety of music you have help me hear things that I haven't heard before I just love music overall there's a Gap Band song that I didn't see on your video list and I would like old man have to suggest this the song is called Yearning For Your Love this is their ultimate song are you think of the Gap Band this song pops up keep up the great work on your Channel much support💪💪💪👍
I agree with everyone saying dive more into The English Beat, especially “Save It For Later”….but then will challenge you to do an even deeper dive and check out Pete Townshend’s version. Takes a great song to another level. Great job guys. Keep up the good work🙂
I loved dancing to this back in the day. I wanted to dance like Ranking Roger, the backup vocalist on this track. This is a supergroup of British punk/ska/twotone with members from The Beat, The Clash, The Specials, and Dexy's Midnight Runners.
Not to nit-pick but, Rankin' Roger was his partner, NOT a back-up vocalist. Calling him a back-up singer doesn't do him justice. Especially since his passing a couple of years ago. Also Roger's version of "The Beat" was quite frankly, BETTER than Dave's.
LOVE this song. Always think of the movie, 16 Candles when I hear this. If you have not seen 16 Candles, you should watch. One of the best 80s movies. This song is in the Alternative Pop and the lead singers reminds me of David Bowie.
@@savsmiles3042 Nope, although it was used in Weird Science as well. Tenderness was featured in the movie, 16 Candles. From Songfacts website: "This was featured in Clueless (1995) during the bouquet-catching scene at the end of the movie. It was also used in the John Hughes movies Sixteen Candles (1984) and Weird Science (1985)."
Wow...another blast from the past. Another 80s band I almost forgot about. These guys were an English band with the two main vocalists from The Beat, and members of Dexys Midnight Runners, the Specials, and the Clash. Their primary two hits and the only ones I think they actually had any success with were this song and "I'll Take You There" a few years later, which I think you would like even more...I did. They were only around for a few years I think.
The English Beat (or just The Beat in England) was one of the most important bands in the early 80s. The were among the leaders of the Ska 2nd wave (or Two Tone) movement. Check out songs like "I Confess" , "Save it for Later" or "Mirror in the Bathroom". I fulfilled a bucket list item by seeing them tour a couple of years ago.
Amber and Jordan, Awesome pick up from the 80's y'all!! Could you two please react to: Haircut 100 - Love Plus One, and also: When In Rome - The Promise !! Super glad you both liked this obscure hit from the 80's!! ❤😀 @Rob Squad Reactions
Hey guys I watch your reviews all the time and I’ve been waiting for this song , the guy dancing in the back and also back up vocals is Ranking Roger he started a band called The Beat he has a song called Maniac it’s great and definitely goes with what’s going on in todays world a remake would be great he died a few years after the song , check it out you won’t be disappointed. The band was known as the English Beat in the U.S.
'80s New Wave' was the BEST music!!!I It was the second invasion of British music aka "New Wave" The sound was so distinct and entrancing it spread like wild fire through the states!! We hit just about every New Wave club or New Wave night at disco clubs in the Nj NYC metro area throughout the 80s!!! CRAZY amazing memories!!!

The break up of the Beat led to General Public and to Fine Young Cannibals.

Save it for Later is one of my favorite songs
Tears of a Clown, Mirror In The Bathroom etc

Not to nit-pick but, Rankin' Roger was his partner, NOT a back-up vocalist. Calling him a back-up singer doesn't do him justice. Especially since his passing a couple of years ago. Also Roger's version of "The Beat" was quite frankly, BETTER than Dave's.
@@LibraKing3121 I love Rankin' Roger. Of course you are right! And not a nit pick at all. My total bad. He doesn't get enough credit.
The whole album "All The Rage" by General Public is fantastic!!
LOVE this song. Always think of the movie, 16 Candles when I hear this. If you have not seen 16 Candles, you should watch. One of the best 80s movies. This song is in the Alternative Pop and the lead singers reminds me of David Bowie.
I think you’re thinking of Weird Science
I would love to see you do some SKA...
“Where’s the Line” is my all-time favorite General Public song. You’d like it!
Love love General Public! 💕💕🎶I held your hand, rings but none on that finger🎶💕💕
Amber and Jordan,
Awesome pick up from the 80's y'all!!
Could you two please react to:
Haircut 100 - Love Plus One, and also: When In Rome - The Promise !!
Super glad you both liked this obscure hit from the 80's!! ❤😀
@Rob Squad Reactions
“Save It For Later” by The (English) Beat, a band that featured both of these gentlemen, is one of the best songs ever.
RIP Ranking Roger
Next GenPub should be "I Confess" then "Too Much or Nothing", and "Never You Done That"
Such a fun '80's tune, and a great memory of everyone on the dance floor clapping along.
This song always......................leaves me searching for a little tenderness. Where is the tenderness.
This was a good album, liked every song on it.
