    Re Ruhmkorff coil
    Back in the 1950's I had one of these as a toy. It was called a "Shocking Coil" delivering a few hundred volts at the output terminals at very low current (Safe). The severity of the shock is controlled by adjusting a sleeve between the primary and secondary windings. You put one secondary contact in each hand. The game was to see if you could take more shock than your friends. In the maximum sleeve position it delivers enough shock to cause your arm muscles to freeze so it was very difficult to let go. This "toy" would never be permitted in today's world!

      Had a very smart teenager who made sock box out of old cigar boxes. He had a few D cells to a coil and a piece of thin metal that moved easy. He would install aluminum foil on box then with a small depredations on cover of box. He would tell you to hold onto box and sake it. He said it was only a hundred volts or so but really woke you up.

    Thank you Sir for this information and the many tips you share. Now perhaps I can share a tip that will serve you. With the availability and cost of ammo being as they are, it is more important than ever to properly keep and protect your supplies. So, one critical observation is that all lubricants and penetrating oils/fluids should be kept clear of munitions. Even being in the same storage locker or work bench for a short while, the residues easily transfer from surface to surface and find a way to permeate into the primers and cartridges. This of course can ruin or degrade the ammunition. I hope it helps.

    The rubber compound and tape are usually kitted together for weatherproofing antenna connections. It is common on cellular telephone sites for a dozen or more cable to antenna interfaces on the tower and there are many of these kits used per installation. If installed correctly it works very well, if not it retains water and causes much trouble. Great video!!!

    I used to (as a child - probably 40-45 years ago) have a "Merit" brand Electrical Experiment set with an induction coil which was very similar in design to yours (although using more modern materials). Usually known as a "shocking coil". Mine used a 4.5 volt battery and was "not suitable for use by people with a heart condition". Was useful to show the electro-magnetic properties of different materials bu inserting different core rods - the more suitable a sample was for use as a transformer core, the higher the output current from the coil and the bigger the "tingle".

    Mr Pete,
    The road trips are not boring. They give those of us who will never get to a lot of these places a chance to at least see a little of what is there. You'll like the Aguila ammo I've found it shoots well. 10 cents a round is about the going rate these days unless you catch a sale. New York state has the strictest gun laws in the nation and the homicides here are worse than most places, just like Chicago.
    Thanks again for making the videos

    I use butyl tape in marine construction. For vacuum bag fiberglass fabrication (to seal the bag on top of the mold). And also I use it to seal some parts with a lot of load, in lieu of polyurethane sealant. The advantage is that if the seal breaks, it can "reglue" itself afterwards. If a silicon or polyurethane caulking breaks, it has to be replaced, the seal is compromised for good.

    Most of the clear tapping fluids that work so well on steel have chlorinated solvents in them such as 1,1,1, trichlorethane. Aluminum reacts quite badly with chlorinated solvents. That is the black gunk that you see on the tap, the reaction that occurs. The threads will be weakened and eventually fail, even if you attempt to clean the gunk out of them very well.
    Years ago I purchased a tub of a pink gel that was supposed to be safe for aluminum, I can't remember the name of it even though it is still in my shed somewhere. That stuff was horrible for trying to tap nearly anything. I have been using the newer Tap Magic for several years now. It is safe for aluminum, unlike the original Tap magic, but it does not have that instant chip cutting action that the original Tap Magic with the 1,1,1 had. Always a trade off somewhere.

      Per your reference to gum..My mom told me once how her siblings and her used to chew blobs of "road tar" for gum...this was in rural West Virginia back in the late 30's and early 40's on a road that really wasn't paved...the oil was mostly used to solidify the gravel just a little but it wasn't rolled down...she said it had a sweet taste...so I'm wondering what it was...did you ever hear of something like that?

    back in the days when bacteria building up in coolant tanks was a problem and we went to synthetics (i was very young at this time) i had an older fella show me that when i wanted the best finish such as milling on 7075 or 6061 to use virgin coconut oil like you buy in the grocery store,, a small cup of it and a small brush is great but when it came to tapping holes in aluminum bacon grease was the king !! both of those cutting mediums softly solidify when the shop is cold but things sure smell good and you do gotta be a clean machinists to use these oils because bacteria will grow but a quick orange wipe,, wipe down and then a red shop rag wipe down keeps everything good

    Worked in a 65 man maintenance shop back in the 80's and usually were lucky to have the best products. We always had a few dozen cans if Tao magic & Aluminum Tap laying around big and shop. I would go around emptying several cans to fill one up. They changed the formula for Tao Magic in mid 80's and was not as good but hopefully safer. When place closed boss let me take some open cans home. Still have a partial can if each tapping fluid.

    Mr. Pete, I think the claim of 40% easier that Crescent makes is in comparison to simple single-pivot cutters. Both the Crescent and the other one you tried are compound-pivot cutters, although with different designs. It makes sense that most compound cutters of similar scale would require about the same amount of force. You could make it even easier, but the distance the two handles would have to move would get too great to be practical.

    I suspect that battery posts came up through the round holes and the metal tabs swing out to contact the posts. The adjustment screw would be set so the armature would vibrate as a buzzer like the old "Model T" coils. There would probably be a spark gap attached to the round eyelets at the front. The post spacing might point to the type of cell intended to be used with this. It could be one of the old lead-acid cells and the rectangular cutout would fit over the vent/filler. This might have been for a physics experiment or demonstration.

    I do some plinking with reloaded 9mm now because with casting my own bullets I can reload them for about 9 cents per round. If you get to wal-mart early enough in the morning of the day when the ammo is delivered you can get a reasonable price on 22LR. Not as good as before 2012 but better than the local gun shop. I can always get 22LR from the local gun shop for about 10 cents per round. I always tap aluminum with wd40 so I was not aware of the problems you get from regular tapping fluid. In fact I seldom ever have any regular tapping fluid, just use motor oil on steel. Thanks for the video.

    • @Daledavispratt
      @Daledavispratt 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +cerberus Saw this after I posted...seems there are a lot of uses for WD that are not on the can...it's not a good lubricant or penetrant...but it does remove the sticky stuff from labels and tape. My dad used to rub it into a sore elbow and claimed it helped that...I'd rather think that rubbing the elbow helped...but who knows?

    • @AmateurRedneckWorkshop
      @AmateurRedneckWorkshop 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +dale pratt everyone who machines any aluminum uses wd40 for a lubricant. It sticks to the steel tool bit and prevents the aluminum from sticking there. Of course being sort of cheap I have switched to diesel for aluminum lubricant, costs about 1/5 as much as wd40 and does the same job.

    Hi Lyle, your induction coil is probably part of a 'medical coil' kit. The Victorians thought electric shocks were good for you!
    Connect to the low voltage coil( primary coil) terminal and the spring blade 'breaking 'contact. Properly adjusted it should work like a doorbell/buzzer and induce a high voltage in the secondary coil. Probably runs on 4 to 6 volts. Radio transmitter Induction Coils are about 6 times bigger. and develop around 20 KV How did you get on with the Aguila .22 ammo. Not super accurate, but cheap here compared with UK and American brands.

    Ok what caused the aluminum black? What about the .22s?

    Go to Cabelas.com. They've got a good variety of .22 ammo, plus use the code to get free shipping for orders over $50. I recently ordered a brick of Aguila Colibri low-velocity QUIET .22 ammo for4 backyard use in my Stevens #26 Crackshot. All you can hear is the click of the hammer on the firing pin & the clink of bullet hitting the steel can. Great ammo for backyard plinking when you have cranky neighbors who would complain ...

      +suzuki samurai I'm glad they limit otherwise you show up at walmart three minutes after opening and the guy in front of you bought the entire inventory of .22!
      I really don't get the hoarding, i feel like its adding to the problem. I've talked to plenty of people who say "yeah when i find it i buy it all" and all i can say is stop that, you're why theres never any when I go to re stock!

      And I thought maybe you got your name from Mr Henry Russell.
      Old Tubal Cain was a man of might,

      On the same token laws are for lawful people. If you outlaw guns than you tip the scales in favor of criminals. They don't obey laws so now you are making easier for them to commit crimes. Tough gun laws mean higher crime as evidenced by Chicago and NYC. I wonder if they will outlaw knives next, no more New York strip steaks. Time to wake up and use some simple logic.
