This is an underrated video. Work and hobbies won't mean a thing if your health is compromised. More artists should watch this before getting down to long sculpting hours.

I've been studying art and drawing over 10 hours, my hand was hurting like hell and I had to stop for two days before going back. Besides of course being moderate with the time I spend drawing daily (max 8 hours) I really needed some tips on pen grip to have better use of my whole arm, I'm sure this will help a lot, thank you so much! ❤️

Not strictly wrist related, but I’ve found my fingers hurt a lot less since I made the pen chunkier (I used a foam hair roller lol, but I’ve seen people use tape as well and i believe they also sell soft pencil wraps). It makes it easier to hold the pen without applying as much pressure with your fingers, which makes your knuckles hurt much less in the long run!

Thanks man, the glove really seems to help, I just cambe back from the osteopathist, and she said that it was caused by my sitffy NECK (thous, shoulders), so maybe you should try what she told me: Neck, and soulders strechings for 15 minutes BEFORE AND AFTER drawing, also some forearm streches ;)

Hey nice! Thanks for the advice!
I've actually been doing these three circus stretches for handstand balancers and they've worked wonders. I started around a year ago and I've never had problems since!
Though since I got the glove, drawing has been fine anyway.
Thanks again for the comment! best wishes for your day!

Thank you so much for this! I've been having chronic wrist pain that won't allow me to draw for more than a few hours every few days. It's REALLY hard for me to draw with my shoulder, as I tend to draw really small to get those fine details. If I draw too big I find that my hand wanders off the tablet. The grip position was new information; I will try that. It's super difficult for me to change all these little habits; it feels like I'm trying to relearn how to draw. It's really frustrating but I hope it'll save my wrist in the long run.

You cannot escape RSI if you are a cg artist like me, i used my shoulder and now i get a sharp shoulder blade pain and i cannot work at all. I tried every single device like vertical mouse and i still get tendonitis. My next step since i am desperate is to change my diet to an anti inflammatory diet and i recently quit coffee since it is not good at all when you have tendonitis. I will also do light muscle building to support these tendons. After that if nothing work i will have to quit my job as a 3d artist.

Glad you ask since i found the solution, just Google for Dr Sarno and TMS, it is the closest thing to a miracle and not only for tendonitis, do yourself a favor and read Dr Sarno books and they are dirt cheap on amazon. Not really since after reading the book i understand that the position doesn't really matter(no talking about extreme here). I cannot explain better but after reading the book anyone would easily understand how it's work. Dr Sarno mention them as medical mythology just like don't sleep on a hard or soft mattress. The position as long as it is not extreme to cause discomfort have no impact .@@polar6066

A big thank you to you for this video. I have early symptoms of cubital tunnel syndrome and am looking for ways to improve ergonomics to prevent it developing further. These tips are great!

Great video. I'm going to now try the better holding position.
One thing I always do with my pens is pop off the buttons using a tiny screwdriver and clip the two posts on the underside so that they are completely disabled. I don't use them because I keep accidentally hitting them, which caused me to hold the pen funny. Even when their actions are set to None, they will cause a stutter in a line if they're pressed while drawing, so I kill them off completely.
Also, you'll find the tiny screw under there that lets you adjust the proximity to the screen before it activates, if anyone's looking for that. I've had to do with some models of pen display.

Ive been dealing with mild but almost constant wrist pain for almost two years now, I went to the doctor recently and it turned out to be a cyst pressing against my nerves, they said it should be okay but after months of wearing a brace, exercising my wrist, drawing w/positioning in mind and taking breaks it’s not getting better, I think i’m gonna need surgery to get the cyst removed :( if anyone else has pain that isn’t solved with exercises/stretching or grip changes you might want to see a doctor too, it might not be something that can be fixed so simply

Great video! I'm just now realizing the need to draw from the shoulder - and not the wrist. Now, I don't usually draw w/ my Intuos Pro.. I just use it for all stuff on computer (general work, navigation, some Adobe software, etc.). I'm getting a sort of tablet holder that I'd use for paper docs, but was going to use it to prop up my Wacom - so it would be kind of like those elevated, angled things that some use for Cintiqus. I saw you mentioned you'd been drawing elevated - was wondering, if elevated on an Intuos Pro was normal or advised. Or, if it's better to keep it flat on the table. I imagine elevated would help ensure i use shoulder, but at same time.. I know it can also create a less-than-natural bend. Keep up awesome work!

Great video. I do a lot of photo editing and I've always been using a small mouse, so I just started to experiment wrist problems a couple of weeks ago. Right now I'm trying to decide between a graphics tablet or a track ball mouse. I know the tablet would be the perfect choice regarding productivity, but I still think the track ball mouse would be the safest choice for my wrist, because with the tablet I would still need to worry about the posture of my hand, and if I don't use it the right way, my problem could get worse. On the other hand and given all I've researched, with the track ball I'd only need to let my hand rest on it and move my right thumb, without me needing to worry about anything else, at least regarding the posture of my hand, I mean, besides other things like my chair, the distance from the desk, etc. I have a very limited budget, so I'm trying to think carefully not to regret my purchase. Anyway, your video is very helpful, exactly the information I was looking for. Thak you very much!!

:( Have you tried seeing nerve specialists? Also if it’s stiff i think that might mean you havent been using it for awhile. slowly loading keeping pain under a 4 might be helpful? @@_kaleido i did get 1 it was expensive.. but im not sure how and what they scanned exactly, probably my brain, but the doc said it was ''normal'', tbh the doctor barely spoke.. and a few days later i was shoved into the mri and even fewer words were exchanged afterwards.... i cant comprehend the scenario, infact i wasted so much money visiting the same such doctors that doesn't listen to me... and then proceeding to get prescribed with mere basic tests, and i doubt they do it well, their precision is so lacking, they behave like they seen this case a 1000 times.. before even hearing me out, and a few times they considered me talking explaining what i researched as me being a smartmouth or an overreaction/paranoia, i mean... fuck dude i had this for such a long time.. im desperate!. just hear me out .. i've yet to seek oversea doctors which might be my last hope..
i'll leave a more specific summary incase another person kind enough drops by,
right... sigh where do i begin... well its basically just like rsi or carpal tunnel. the issue worsens through repetitive action but.. [everyone i went to didn't know this term 'rsi' yeah......] but even there's always the default value my arm is stuck at without doing any action.i feel through along my fingers to my wrist my forearms my elbow my shoulder my neck even, its feels like a pinched nerve.. every moment is very tight and restricted, my forearm muscles also tire out quite quickly, my arm in general always feels fatigued. a metaphor would be ''a fan being clogged by dust dirt and its performance slowing down''
and if i was to say it in numbers.. my arm right now is 45% when im tired 25% when im having some kind of dopamine rush adrenaline it spikes to 75%, and the occasional 85%, but with poor hand eye coordination after being stuck at random percentages for so long, it feels off
i had poor posture at the start i was a heavy gamer, i also noticed my fingers r slightly deformed in the ways i held the mouse and pushed on the keyboard
it also feels like a cramp stiffness tightness a rubber band forcing to stretch, my reflexes and overall arm strength, stamina endurance is also affected, i say this by comparing how many reps i can do with dumbbells say for example 200 for both hands but my left wouldn't feel anything the next day. unless i overwork it over the limit, and still it would be just usual fatigue, i also find pushup quite hard. i feel my palm near my wrist area harden and stay stiffened abit and i feel like something cold idk how to describe it, my joints hurt too, i also find lifting weights or any heavy work in general hard with my right. even my grip strength. feels like iwas battered by a group, my hand also feels cold sometimes and is cold to the tough. and sometimes feels hot but not hot or cold to the touch, also my shoulder area feels the tightest its hard to use my whole arm in combination with my wrist elbow for things like art or gaming with precision, also my wrist rotation is VERY tight.. also i noticed that i can tough the back of my neck with my left hand quite flexible. but i can't with my right. i can barely tough my upper back, also when i jump i feel something loose, but its temporary running too. i brought a vertical mouse. but it felt worse. i rested my arm did nothing for 2 weeks. but felt it became worse or weaker. i find holding a pencil grip for prolonged period tiring, my arm is cold in the morning when i wake up, and feels abit frozen and slow . i also feel like some weird backpain there's more. ask me questions and i might have answer for em all, my summary is a jumbled mess

It's hard to find specific videos on this topic, so thank you :) One thing I wanted to ask about drawing from the shoulder, how do you adjust your tablet position and arm height? Since I'm guessing you still keep you hand loose and not completely bound to the desk/tablet..so you can move your whole arm around. Or do you keep your tablet near the edge, so the desk doesn't restrain your shoulder movement ? Thanls, again :)

@@marachannel12 :O It depends how small! But if your wrist hurts, you might want to try drawing bigger! Or if you must use a really small surface you can try drawing with your elbow? shoulder > elbow > wrist

I’ve been told my grip is weird and it just turns out perhaps it’s part of what prevented me from having major issues with my drawing hand! I’ve always been holding the pen resting it on the third finger.
The reason why I’m watching this though is that I happen to have pain on my other (non-dominant) wrist, cause I use that hand for the keyboard shortcuts :/ anyone else?

same here, with these videos i'm no longer having pain problems in my knuckles when holding the pencil, however my left hand gets more wrist pain from the shortcut keys i'm using when drawing, it's annoying.
