Thanks for the great video! I am thinking of purchasing this palette and I am a little stumped on if the wells are slanted or not. Online many people have told me that the bottom of the wells are not sloped/slanted, but some people swear they are. Hmmm. I am hoping to add a small blob of paint in the shallow end, and then to squirt a little water that can pool with a diluted paint wash in the deep end. Do you think this would be possible? Hi. Great question. The bottom of each well is flat. However there is a slight slant to the sides of the wells. Maybe that is why you got conflicting answers. I have that porcelain palette too! Love it. I could sware I heard you say PV23 Dioxizine violet is opaque. I have several brands and none of mine are. Its just so highly saturated and dark that it looks almost black unless it's thinned down a lot with water. At perfect saturation it's just a beautiful transparent purple. Handprintwatercolor says....Dioxazine violet PV23 (and its sister form, PV37) is a lightfast to impermanent, semitransparent, heavily staining, very dark valued, dull violet pigment, available from about 30 pigment manufacturers worldwide. Permanence depends on the brand.

You could try Schmincke's Purple Magenta in place of Opera! It has a similar hue, but is just the PR122 pigment (which is very lightfast) without the added fluorescent.
Hi Kris, colour me confused. 3:29 You say (in June 21) you first started painting 2 years ago? But the paintings you show in videos early in 2019 look pretty professional, and you say (in January 2019) you give tutorials on watercolour. The Quiller palette looks interesting, thanks for sharing.
I have a background in art from my younger years. But, I had taken a 45 year break. So when I began painting seriously in watercolor in 2019 I was building on that previous experience. Hope that clarifies things a bit. Thanks for watching and leaving feedback.

Hi thanks for the informative colour video and chart. I was wondering as yellow ochre is quite a staple on most palletes whether you are substituting it for the trans-yellow oxide or nickle azo yellow instead. Love those earthy yellows and yellow ochre is an old favourite.
@@KrisDeBruineStudio I have a clear image in my head and place the tubes in the corresponding wells. As I am testing and swatching the cords before filling the wells I find t’s all wrong! I know others go through this as well but it’s not going to resolve this any time soon. I’ve been at this for weeks! I do have several others both large and small (12 wells) rectangular porcelain palettes each designated for different subjects such as specific landscapes, floral, portraits etc. I try to keep my pigments from getting contaminated so my paintings always look fresh and clean. Mud colors are useful only when the colors are carefully selected, lol. I just want to set up my colors on this palette will provide good complimentary, analogous schemes, facilitate neutralizing of pigments. I check on all the pigments listed using primarily D Smith but, I also have researched and carefully selected other manufacturers for the best colors such as Holbein, M Graham, W&N, DaVinci and Maimeri Blu . In the 50+ decades I have been painting I’ve never been so overwhelmed!

This is so helpful, thank you! As a beginner let me ask a really basic question, if I follow your guide, would the 3 colors in the primary spots be considered a cool, warm or neutral primary? I purchased the Daniel smith split primary and now I am starting to confuse myself. Also would the colors in the complimentary spot to the primary 's still be compliments.? Thank you for any advice you might offer.
Hi Meg. I would put a red, yellow and blue in the primary spots that are kind of in the "middle" of the temperature spectrum for that hue. For example, Cobalt Blue is a great "middle" blue. Hansa Yellow is a great "medium" yellow and Perylene Red is a great middle red. Then other pigments that either move toward cool, or warm, in the hue family would be arranged to the warm or cool side of that color. Make sense???

Hi Meg. Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. I've been busy with Christmas. Yes. Hansa Yellow Light is my cooler yellow. My warmer yellow is New Gamboge. I've also tried a few others like Hansa Yellow Medium. Every manufacturer uses different names, so it can be confusing. Here is a color wheel I share with others (Stephen Quiller Wheel) it uses more generic names. I use this to try and place my colors on the wheel. images.app.goo.gl/SPQWto5TAme2SaLh7

Your video and this answer were very helpful to me, although I still lack the confidence to set up my palette... The Quiller wheel is almost $30 on Amazon, so I'm hoping to find a website or affordable download to help me map out my colors so I can get started. It's terribly overwhelming, but it's a lifelong dream and I really appreciate all of your videos. I've enjoyed studying them carefully, like I'm going to school, which I totally could not afford. 🙏🏻
