      I know you wrote this a year ago but I had to share my agreement...bass player here, i know more theory than any of the guitar players i've had to deal with (which means I just know major scale modes and the fucking name of the notes in my fretboard, isn't that your minimum responsibility as someone who wants to play music?) and guess what...it's useless as musical language serves mainly to comunicate and they don't speak this language...and we lose so many possibilities just because of this...even worse when your dear friend flamenco guitarist uses inverted and altered chords (but still can't even say what he's doing) and expects me to just magically know what to do and gets annoyed when I ask him to stop for a moment so I can analise what the fuck he's doing...and even more frustraring when all his response is "you don't need to know the cords, just play the roots..." He's a great guitarist and a beautiful person, but I still want to kill him in this moments

    1. When the only bass player anybody knows is Flea and so everybody wants you to "Slappa Da Bass".
    2. The only songs people request from you are Seven Nation Army, Feel Good Inc. , Stand By Me and I Want You Back.
    3. When you realised that there is no respect for Bass in rock so you decide to try out soul/R&B but then you remember you're nowhere near as skilful as Pino Palladino or James Jamerson.

    An elderly gentleman is on safari in Africa. He calls the safari guide over and complains, " Can't you do something about that constant drumming? It's driving me mad?"
    "oh, no," says the guide. "If the drums stop, something terrible will happen!"
    "But what could be worse than that constant infernal drumming?" asks the old man.
    Suddenly, the drumming stops.

    I don’t know what music or world or music genres people are listening to, but music is NOTHING without bass. Period. I can easily get around having a guitar player and vice versa, I can easily get passed having a keyboard player, but drums and bass are necessary 80% of the time. I can’t stand when people disrespect bass. Also, if you were ever out of tune on bass everyone would be able to tell immediately since the bass is responsible for the foundation!
    Disclaimer: I play Bass, Guitar, Keys, Uke, Banjo, and Harmonica with many different genres.

    • @nemodollaz4120
      @nemodollaz4120 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      suchdoge thats actually a really dumb statement. I played guitar first, and then i started playing bass, and there are lots of tonalites that a guitar and a bass cant reach, thats why they play different parts and one creates the foundation. Bass is bass, regardless of its played on a bass guitar, and it creates a foundation. Simple. One of the greatest videos showing this is "metal without bass", i dont like metal, but this shows you how much empty space is left with no bass

    • @hextikwilliams1494
      @hextikwilliams1494 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      At the end of the day! Bass and Treble are needed in ALL MUSIC REGARDLESS of what instrument you use for it. Again, I can also say, “I don’t need guitar because I can play all the guitar parts on a bass.” There’s really no need or point to say, “you don’t need bass guitar.” You don’t “NEED” anything. Every musical part could be done with vocals including the drum parts, so yeah.

    • @Taylor-ou7xp
      @Taylor-ou7xp 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Klapsigaar en Basgitaar it really depends what metal genre you are playing, what kind of bassist you have and what role he has. I've seen Iron Maiden and Anthrax live and boyyyy did I hear and love the bass playing. Harris and Frank Bello know how to stand out and create interesting scales that go well alongside the guitars... The quality of bass playing really depends on the player... If he is carismatic and wants to stand out the bass just turns into a lower tuned guitar... And that's why I love it
      Let's not talk about 3 men bands like Venom or Nirvana... There the bass is like 40% of the sound and if you take it out the songs are totally empty

    I was a bass player for about two years of playing live but eventually I just couldn't take it anymore and took up guitar instead. You really have to have the right personality to be a decent bass player. I couldn't handle not being noticed and being the least appreciated despite endless hours of practice and study. Sounds really egotistical I know but I had to be honest with myself. I'm much happier since I switched to guitar.

      Nemo Dollaz I see where you're coming from my dude. And You could add primus and jaco and lots of Motown hits to that list too. And Chic. It's just that in 90% of popular music, the bass just doesn't seem to hold that level of stand outishness as those bands. And I'm just too much of a believer in bass being a functional rather than melodic role in bands, barring the more exceptional kind of bands you mention. And believe me I'm not gonna try and defend my preference for standing out as a purely artistic decision. I'm just calling a spade a spade, warts and all: I wanna perform and be very much noticed a lot when I do perform, I want it to be more easily understood by the audience for its showmanship and flourish, the higher frequencies allow for that. Is it a purist view of music, not really. But is it human? I believe it is very much so

    • @nemodollaz4120
      @nemodollaz4120 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sean Bent but its also human to create new and unique sounds on bass through usage of effects and the poly tonal rhythm of combining with guitar and creating more than one sounds. Other than that, its still worth noting that bass is still a huge part of a foundation and adds more depth and layer to the sound as a whole, not to mention how the bass can be mixed into the melody after recording or during multiple takes and changing the tones... so theres that, and you can also layer guitars on top of that and create more depth im the sound. The mixing of these instruments in the post production is a huge factor. As much as i love flea and the chili peppers and i think californication is a great album, it just wasnt mixed well. So account for all of that and just think of how much depth in instrumentation and character is lost without the foundation to the melody
