@@carlkolthoff5402 Well, usually the words that are most common in a language are "allowed" to be very irregular. If you hear and use a word constantly, you don't question it, because you are so familiar with it. But if there's a very rare word, you have to go by more general rules to conjugate it, so even if it's not regular originally, it is changed over time to be more normal. E.g.: "to be", "I am", "you are" and "he/she/it is" are extremely different, but no one notices or cares.

Så it's really just to separate two very similar words that sound the same both in formal speech: 'åkk' and informally: 'å'. Technically "också" tends to be a long vowel and "och" a short one in informal speech, but that's just to make some informal spelling difficult aswell.
@@1997jankuschef limp bizkit was a nu metal band in the 90s that had massive success mostly from their image that they used to jump start the carreers of a bunch of other alternative bands, polyphia is an instrumental guitar jerkoff band that has gotten exceedingly popular through their image. Beyond that calling polyphia "modern prog" when most of their songs are 4/4 verse chorus verse songs entirely made up of guitar solos is really funny to me. Don't get me wrong I like both bands.
@@8ori5 that's a hard one honestly, they're definitely a great band that does really good arranging in their compositions however I'd say that some of their hype is kinda silly. It's very much pop songs comprised of guitar solos which, if that's your thing it's unparalleled but what gets me is when people group them in with math rock and prog just because they're instrumental and guitar based. The jazz influence I also don't really see beyond like, 7th and 9th chords occasionally lol. I think their album New Levels New Devils is worth a peep if you're curious but if that doesn't grab you, nothing by them will.
The fact that you can play the same lick on each of those basses, and still sound so consistent, clean and uniquely yourself is proof you are an incredible player sir. Very humbling..

1:04 a thing you didn't mention is in a lot of electronic genres like dubstep, house, and trap that are played live through turntables and speakers, the keys normally are around F and E (usually minor because that's how the chords resolve) because the sub bass is best heard around 40-45 hz
I never thought about listening to music that already exists in your head as audiation, I've always just thought of it as being able to hear a note or chord in your head as you read sheet music. I'm literally constantly hearing songs in my head and can't *stop* doing that. I thought everyone did that.
I’ve recently learned that not everyone does that, but I sure do as well. Recently, I’ve had a lot of fun conversations with folks about what happens inside their heads all day. It’s shocking how much variation there is. I recommend talking to folks about it.

I kind of don't get this one. I don't listen to a lot of prog, but I used to really like polyphia. Im not super sure how they relate to limp bizkit, cus I never really listened to them.
@@thebillyd00 Basically, Polyphia is the most accessible and easy to listen to version of prog. Just like Limp Bizkit was to metal. Theres nothing inherently wrong with listening to them, but the people that listen to them and think they're “hardcore” prog, tend to get made fun of.

Never realised audiation wasn't something that just anybody could do. I always called it my "mental jukebox", playing back songs in my head to pass the time when I didn't have access to a music player.
I didn't know there was a term for hearing music in your head as if you were actually listening to it, or that not everyone can do it well. I've just always been able to hear perfect recreations of songs in my head so I never really thought much of it until now.
I never heard the term audiation until this video-- and I've been doing it since I was in elementary school, I just never knew there was a word for it. I have extreme ADHD as well as anxiety and problems concentrating on reality because of an overactive brain/racing thoughts-- and I often find myself playing entire songs/albums in my head and completely losing my focus on reality from being sucked into them. I'm never able to remember a song or certain part of a song without playing out the whole thing in my head afterwards. Also, I've found audiation can also be used in conjunction with perfect pitch to remember what key a tune is in. Obviously there are loads of other uses but I've never heard anyone mention that one.
Audiation has been essential to me for my entire life but I never knew that there was a word for it. Music is the one constant presence of something organized in my otherwise high speed mess of a brain and I'd probably go insane if I didn't always have it in my head. Thank you, audiation!

Hi Adam! When I was a child I thought everybody audiated! Often times when I was a kid when I knew how long I had to wait for something, I would pick out an album that would be around the same time and try to remember it all track by track! I often was unsuccessful the more songs I got into the album (because no cd shuffle lol). Its awesome that you brought it up, as I feel it has helped me become a better musician.
There are definitely bands that are better in one setting vs another. I saw Gojira live knowing little about them and they were awesome, but I can't be bothered to listen to their stuff in a studio setting. Apocalyptica is one of my favorite bands, but they're pretty whatever live. Rammstein is better live because spectacle, same with Avatar. I think Jinjer is better in studio over live, but the one time I saw them live was kind of ruined by one of their opening acts blowing out my eardrums >.>

I used audiation when I was in school. I'd always study to the same music (an hour long metalcore mix) then before exams I'd just listen to that music non stop, and keeping it playing in my head during the exam. Definitely helped with exam stress and memory recall.

Db is awesome as a pianist. Your middle three fingers don't have to be pulled so far into your palm, and it feels more interesting to the fingers and looks more interesting in your head than, say, C major. B major is my favorite for the same reasons
Adam, that example of a chord with narrow intervals on the left hand and wide intervals on the right hand instantly sounded like something from the Zelda: Breath Of The Wild soundtrack. I think with just that example you cracked the code of what makes that game's music so eerie.
I still do this all the time with the same album. It definitely makes it easier that it's a concept album and it's easy to follow once you've listened to it 10+ times.
as an example of someone with aphantasia, personally, i've never in my life been able to visualize or audiolize(?) anything, yet i've found minor success as a visual artist, and dating back as long as i could stand i have had a keen talent for memorization, being able to recite full albums, full lyrics, in time even grew into transcribing music i loved into sheet music. (although composing is troublesome as i don't know what sound a note will play until played) yet learning at age 23 that visualization and in turn audiation(?) is possible kinda gave me a solid panic of missing out, something i always idolized as a superpower growing up is all of a sudden realized as normal for the rest of the population. your mention of it being connected is perplexing to my personal experience tbqh
I've only just discovered your videos in the last week and I gotta say - man it makes me feel stupid that I don't understand half of the things you're saying, it's fantastic. I don't think I'll ever reach a level where I'm nearly as musically intelligent as this, (or competent) but I find it all extremely interesting. I hope you keep doing this and enjoying it, it's great stuff.
Vocal musician here! Vocalists also have preferred keys due to the physical nature of the instrument. There are different muscle systems in the larynx, and you have to switch between them to reach different registers. Most vocal training is about accessing and smoothing out the transition between registers. Keys that tend to put melodies on transition breaks in the voice work poorly for singers. F is not a friendly singer key! However, F sharp is really nice. A Cappella choirs will raise or lower their key and it will cause more stability in the ensemble pitch. Also, this is one reason why pit orchestra books for musicals often come in crazy keys. The composer probably wrote the song in a piano-friendly key, and the original actor asked for a key change. The pro orchestra players have no problem sight transposing, and the publisher ends up writing down the actual performance key.
I know a lot of percussionists and bassists who can tell within 10 bpm just by tapping their foot, but since notes have more space in between them than beats per minute do, it’s easier for the brain to differentiate and sort notes than rhythm
I had a drum major in high school who could do it. At least, she had good tempo memory and would direct at the same tempo no matter what. (Most people wind up going faster when nervous, possibly due to hearts racing.) Though I do note that a lot of people without perfect pitch can have good pitch memory with songs they are very familiar with. So what I described may not actually be perfect tempo.
I don't know about guessing it perfectly, but I find I'm able to get pretty close by singing a song I'm very familiar with and that I know the tempo of in my head, and then comparing it to the thing I'm trying to work out
Drum line percussionists are taught to do this in intervals of (usually) 10 bpm. Especially snare players. There are people on TH-cam and irl I've seen do it without even a metronome, which to some sounds blasphemous. Check em out. :)
The whole "singing while improvising/playing" is because understanding musical intervals and textures with your body is more inmediate than playing an external musical instrument, thus helps you be more expressive.
On a long drive, I was audiating, since my dad never turns on the radio. And after a while he turns to me and says; "what?" And I answer; "Oh sorry, was it too loud?"
Aphantasia is different for a lot of people. But for most people (including myself) it’s mostly just the inability to visualize things with your minds eye, so basically you just can’t have dreams, that be it while you are sleeping or when you are awake. Some people only have trouble with one of those. I think aphantasia definitely does affect my memory but it doesn’t stem from it. Most people get confused on the subject as “you don’t remember things” but they don’t get the concept that if one can’t visualize it doesn’t mean they remember it, because we can still think and recall things. Audiation is a big help to me personally to help me remember places or help me count all my measures in band. Aphantasia is something not talked about a lot and is not understood to most people who don’t have it. Since it’s not talked about enough people that have it don’t know they have it until they learn about it (I only learned about it until I was 13). I just always love to talk about it to educate those that might have it and don’t know it yet.

Also great for improvising over the song. And for skipping the parts of the song you don’t like.

Often times when I was a kid when I knew how long I had to wait for something, I would pick out an album that would be around the same time and try to remember it all track by track! I often was unsuccessful the more songs I got into the album (because no cd shuffle lol). Its awesome that you brought it up, as I feel it has helped me become a better musician.
i remember seeing a band at a festival years ago that were absolutely fantastic live. i bought their CD, and it sucked.
There are definitely bands that are better in one setting vs another. I saw Gojira live knowing little about them and they were awesome, but I can't be bothered to listen to their stuff in a studio setting. Apocalyptica is one of my favorite bands, but they're pretty whatever live. Rammstein is better live because spectacle, same with Avatar. I think Jinjer is better in studio over live, but the one time I saw them live was kind of ruined by one of their opening acts blowing out my eardrums >.>
This has been my experience, too, rather than the inverse. The energy and charm isn't on the record like it was live, for example.

I’m really into video game soundtracks, so how do you think the aim to create music that you aren’t supposed to focus on makes interesting or desirable music and how is “background” music like ones featured in video game soundtracks? Also great vids :]
I used audiation when I was in school. I'd always study to the same music (an hour long metalcore mix) then before exams I'd just listen to that music non stop, and keeping it playing in my head during the exam. Definitely helped with exam stress and memory recall.

What I learned in my music theory class when it came to a “textbook definition” of music was this: “Music is sound organized in time”.
I audiate whenever I want to listen to music but am too lazy to go get headphones or I’m in class and can’t listen to music. It’s a useful skill for situations such as those
Whenever I was doing an exam in school I always audiated songs in my head throughout the entire exam. Yeah, I agree, it's pretty useful.

Db is awesome as a pianist. Your middle three fingers don't have to be pulled so far into your palm, and it feels more interesting to the fingers and looks more interesting in your head than, say, C major.

Adam, that example of a chord with narrow intervals on the left hand and wide intervals on the right hand instantly sounded like something from the Zelda: Breath Of The Wild soundtrack. I think with just that example you cracked the code of what makes that game's music so eerie.

as an example of someone with aphantasia,
personally, i've never in my life been able to visualize or audiolize(?) anything, yet i've found minor success as a visual artist, and dating back as long as i could stand i have had a keen talent for memorization, being able to recite full albums, full lyrics, in time even grew into transcribing music i loved into sheet music. (although composing is troublesome as i don't know what sound a note will play until played) yet learning at age 23 that visualization and in turn audiation(?) is possible kinda gave me a solid panic of missing out, something i always idolized as a superpower growing up is all of a sudden realized as normal for the rest of the population.

Any time I have 6 minutes to kill I play Bohemian Rhapsody in my head
never knew it was a thing, but got goose bumps audiating one of my favourite tunes
I litterally do it all the time, and when it stops, my head feels empty
Vocal musician here! Vocalists also have preferred keys due to the physical nature of the instrument. There are different muscle systems in the larynx, and you have to switch between them to reach different registers. Most vocal training is about accessing and smoothing out the transition between registers. Keys that tend to put melodies on transition breaks in the voice work poorly for singers. F is not a friendly singer key! However, F sharp is really nice. A Cappella choirs will raise or lower their key and it will cause more stability in the ensemble pitch. Also, this is one reason why pit orchestra books for musicals often come in crazy keys. The composer probably wrote the song in a piano-friendly key, and the original actor asked for a key change. The pro orchestra players have no problem sight transposing, and the publisher ends up writing down the actual performance key.

is there anything such as perfect tempo like there is perfect pitch? when a person can tell bpm just by listening to a song.
I know a lot of percussionists and bassists who can tell within 10 bpm just by tapping their foot, but since notes have more space in between them than beats per minute do, it’s easier for the brain to differentiate and sort notes than rhythm
I had a drum major in high school who could do it. At least, she had good tempo memory and would direct at the same tempo no matter what. (Most people wind up going faster when nervous, possibly due to hearts racing.)
Though I do note that a lot of people without perfect pitch can have good pitch memory with songs they are very familiar with. So what I described may not actually be perfect tempo.
I don't know about guessing it perfectly, but I find I'm able to get pretty close by singing a song I'm very familiar with and that I know the tempo of in my head, and then comparing it to the thing I'm trying to work out
Drum line percussionists are taught to do this in intervals of (usually) 10 bpm. Especially snare players. There are people on TH-cam and irl I've seen do it without even a metronome, which to some sounds blasphemous. Check em out. :)

The whole "singing while improvising/playing" is because understanding musical intervals and textures with your body is more inmediate than playing an external musical instrument, thus helps you be more expressive.

Aphantasia is different for a lot of people. But for most people (including myself) it’s mostly just the inability to visualize things with your minds eye, so basically you just can’t have dreams, that be it while you are sleeping or when you are awake. Some people only have trouble with one of those. I think aphantasia definitely does affect my memory but it doesn’t stem from it. Most people get confused on the subject as “you don’t remember things” but they don’t get the concept that if one can’t visualize it doesn’t mean they remember it, because we can still think and recall things. Audiation is a big help to me personally to help me remember places or help me count all my measures in band. Aphantasia is something not talked about a lot and is not understood to most people who don’t have it. Since it’s not talked about enough people that have it don’t know they have it until they learn about it (I only learned about it until I was 13). I just always love to talk about it to educate those that might have it and don’t know it yet.
I'm able to hear "Pet Sounds" in my mind's ear. Strange to jump between all the instruments tho.
