4 years later... did this a while ago and i still get compliments for my hair :) thank you for the tutorial
Welp, let me tell you sir. I've watched maybe... 30-50 videos of do-it-yourself ombre techniques. Many of which similar to yours. I've been thinking about bleaching my hair ombre style for some time now, and have been terrified because I've always had really long nice hair. If I screwed it, I'd have a lot to lose. But of all those videos I studied.... I ended up using this video the most. Basically following what you did the whole way. And I can't believe how perfect my ombre turned out! What the hell? The perfect layering.... no blobs, no unevenness, no hard lines! WHAT? Damn, thanks man. Best ombre how-to video on the internet.
Agree
six months later and I'm still loving my ombre dude!
I used to do this to my hair! I sectioned it differently though. Advice I would offer to anyone about to give this a go is rather than backcombing, just tease the base of each section a little before applying bleach - it can look blobby otherwise. Also, don't rub the bleach into the sections, the finished result will look more natural and textural with a bit of colour variation. Also, I found that the front of my hair lightened much quicker than the back, so I used to start at the back first. One last suggestion - applying a bit of conditioning mask to the roots / scalp with a make-up brush when you have sectioned your hair will offer some protection from stray blobs of bleach. Finally, if you mess it up and it turns out brassy and yellow, just relax in sun while you wait for the postie to arrive with your purple shampoo. Exposure to sunlight will alter the colour.
Thank you for this comment in a real life are you scenario on yourself it’s very useful thank you
Thank you for these tips !! It was so helpful. I teased the base and it definitely helped with no harsh lines. I was unsure about the not rubbing it because I thought the bleach should go everywhere but I followed this tip anyway and I loved how it came out. Some strands stayed a little darker so my hair is more highlighted as opposed to just one flat color.
Purple shampoo may not work. Use toner
@@MultiColouredVagina Depends what shade you're aiming for. Also purple shampoo is more temporary and fades more easily than toner if you overdo it. Hair is very porous after bleaching, so this can easily happen. After bleaching sometimes the brassiness stabilizes and the colour changes on it's own a bit, especially when exposed to sunlight. Toner can muddy your colour and make it look dull and dingy or just "off" if done badly. Again, it depends on what colour you're going for. I'm 9.3 and will be staying that way for a while I think.
I wonder if the OP had demarcations from not blending when he bleached right where the rubber band sat, thats worrying me tremendously and I don't know if he did that off camera because I don't believe you can get this result without some weird lines from the rubber band!
I've done this three times to my hair since 2021. I get compliments and people can't believe I did it myself. Thank you!!
May I ask what you did with the hair that has been bleached the first time when you did this the second time? I’m not sure if I should apply a new layer of bleach with a lower volume (I have dark brown hair) or only bleach what has out grown. Can you share that? Thank you!
Same !! Or when I want to remove black dye!!
I am a stylist myself and I do appreciate how passionate and sharing your knowledge here. You are a great teacher ❤️watching from Germany.
Oh thank you 🙏🏻 it’s totally my pleasure 😁✌🏻
Cheers dude, I left the industry due to the pretentious views on how it should be done. It left me a nervous wreck trying to channel my creativity through pretty applications and language. I'm now opening up an organic vegan studio, your videos have helped me see now is the right time for my hairdressing style 10 years on. :)
Superb Howard glad you liked it and I’m very pleased to hear you’re coming back into the industry and organic vegan studio sounds amazing good luck
A what?
@@marssssssssh a hair salon that only uses organic, vegan friendly colour and products like Oway
Congrats!!!
I hope all is going well for you ❤️
I did this on a whim today and I LOVE MY HAIR! ❤️The transition is so smooth and natural! 🤩 My hair was a basic darkish brown and I went to a level 8ish
If you follow the videos instructions religiously, it’s going to look exactly like the mannequin. He didn’t sugarcoat the result to get more views for this, he was absolutely truthful about the result!
If you’re going to do this, avoid these little mistakes that Ilearned from:
1) section the hair carefully and make it look perfect. Tighten the elastics close to your head.. It’s important!
2) get double the amount of bleach you think you need! You can use the leftovers later. You’re screwed if you run out
3) get proper gloves and wear long sleeves. The bleach stings like crazy if it gets on your skin
4) use STRONG hair elastics. I broke one right at the front and I was left with a patch from tying it again. It would have turned out perfect if that hadn’t happened
5) buy the toner AFTER you’ve bleached the hair. I’m glad I didn’t spend money on toner yet, because I wouldn’t have known how light the end result would have been. I wore a beanie to the shop and got the right color.
6)
Superb thank you very much for your comment on all the best James
4 years later I found this video, telling my self “it is a sign to color my hair, ig”. I tried this technique, slightly worried about the outcome. The sectioning of hair took us more than an hour but the coloring part was finished in less than 30 minutes.
I did all the things in the video, no teasing of hair and such. It turned out great! I was really not expecting the outcome to be that good because how on earth will it blend that nice??!! but EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED. I LOVE MY HAIR!! it turned out great, for real.
So, to you, who’s reading this, go girl! Slay that balayage look with this easy technique.
P.S. Be careful so that you won’t dye the roots, you surely don’t wanna have a random patch on top :)
I did this technique today and it turned out great!! I wish I could attach a picture! Thank you so much for this video :)
I would love to see it do you can add me on Instagram and send me a picture there @thelifeofhair1

@@TheLifeOfHair can we do this on a dark colored hair for same results?
I’m truly so grateful for your platform of how you show to use or try alternative ways to do traditional/add-on services for clients. It has dramatically helped me to get out of doing things in a “Traditional” manner, and I sincerely appreciate you willing show us your perspective of how you would do a color service in a minimal time and with the same detail and neatness.
Wonderful so glad you appreciate the channel thank you for reaching out and telling me
So I did this... this morning. I haven't toned yet..waiting for my toner in the mail.. but! I have to say after the sectioning. The process was so easy!! I did not section as well has he did..but I tried .. that was the hardest part for me, but so far it looks soo good!! I could of never done this free hand.. thank you for the video!!!
Pleasure glad that you enjoyed it and it worked out well for you 😁👍🏻
Jeannie Robletto can i ask you how will u apply your toner? All at once all over head or by sections? I’m not yet much experienced coloring my hair. Also, do you know when is the glaze applied?
Watch somegirljess she have great toning videos. So does ellebangs and Sam Vay! I'm not experienced either. You dont want my advice! Haha Lol. Good luck girl!
Are you a professional or did you do it at home for the first time ever? Cause I wanna do it at home and I'm not a professional
I did this on myself 3 months ago and loved the results, perfect base to dye my hair pink and not have it just start in a weird straight line around my head. I'm about to use this method again to lighten what's grown out
Omg I'm so trying this. I've put off dying my hair for over 3 years because I have seborrheic dermatitis and the last time I tried dying my hair it burned my scalp like crazy. This is a game changer and EXACTLY the look I've been going for. Thank you so much for posting this ❤️
I think it is the easiest n quickest to do it on your own .. been watching tonnes of videos
You've got a "Bob Ross" sort of quality when it comes to your painting technique. Add some adjectives like "happy hair" to your dialogue and you'll be the Bob Ross of Beauticians.
Haha I have had comments like this before and I take it as a massive compliment I love Bob
@@TheLifeOfHair I failed to mention that it's your nice soothing voice sounds similar to Bob Ross. It's definitely a gift in your line of work, after all stylist often find themselves to be therapist. Lol
Also I did the technique you taught in this video with the help of my 17 year old son (who has never colored hair) The technique was super easy and it came out beautifully. Ty.

Love this channel!❤ it's cool to watch and learn from talented stylist that isn't pretentious. I like that he isn't over complicating everything or taking everything overly serious, becsuse it actually gives you the confidence to try the techniques.
At the all ponytail stage this gave me 90’s vibes! Great technique. I’m going to try this myself at home. Thank you!
How was it? Did you fo it yourself?
Simple, quick and add a glaze ...boom! Another real time salon treat. Thanks for realism.
I’ve used this technique twice now to bleach my hair before dyeing with fashion colours! I wish I discovered it years ago. I don’t think I’ll ever feel confident enough to bleach right to the root so this is perfect. I agree with what others are saying, sectioning the parts it the biggest paint but then it’s easy from there! I will say, I have pitch black hair so this would not look good for someone with the same hair if they just kept the colour since it will be a very harsh transition from black to brass, but it’s a great base for applying fashion colours.
I just used this method at home today. It worked out so much better than I expected. I did back comb very lightly and that worked out for my fine hair. I also cut my bleach with shampoo since my hair takes to it so very fast. Thanks for showing the steps 😊
I love this whole vibe. I was just sitting here so nervous to do my own hair, last time I chickened out too, despite doing my hair dozens of times as a teen. I just lost my confidence for this sort of thing. But maybe I will try it.. wish me luck! I will add in some "V's" at the top of the sections for blending my 2 year regrowth in more. Here goes nothing!
I did it to myself today. It was super easy and it's turned out great. Thanks very much for the video 🙂😘
I did this to my hair and the results are so great like just as good as my local hair dresser can do super safe
I love it! I grabbed mine hair into a ponytail today & thought, why not?! Then I chickened out but after seeing your technique & result, I feel much more confident ~ so THANK YOU! 🤘🏼🏹
Great good luck
I did this! I recommend it! I have black hair and when bleached, it turned to a caramel brown. It looks quite nice! The technique was great through because it creates streaks and highlights and a good fade. Just, I was scared about bleaching so high onto my head so for some sections I didn’t bleach high enough so the fade like wasn’t so consistent on the underparts for me personally, but that was my fault. So I just recommend following his method exactly and it’ll turn out great!
Am thinking of using this technique again to bleach again and maybe dye a lighter colourful tone.
Wonderful that is great to read glad it worked out well for you
Thank you. I over think everything, you have made my hairstyling life easier. Now how do you convince new clients that this is the way to do it.
Im binge watching your videos, back to work soon, your helping me to practice different techniques, im very grateful 😍
Wonderful So pleased you’re enjoying the videos
It worked!!! Thank you for sharing this trick!
This is the best diy ombre tutorial on youtube in my opinion. Your channel is wonderful. I do have a question, however---if we wanted to refresh a grown-out ombre, could we use this method to do it or would it end up patchy (assuming I avoid re-bleaching already bleached areas)? Could we lower the ponytails a few inches to allow more virgin hair at the top or would that look weird? I know this vid is old so I don't expect an answer really, but I figured I'd try! Thanks so much!
Hi Anna! Thank you very much glad you appreciate the video yes you can touch up the regrowth but I would recommend that it’s about a six month regrowth with the specific technique Any sooner than that and you don’t really have the hair to work with you simply just repeat the process that you did in the first place painting the new hair that has grown threw up to the existing pre-lightened hair in exactly the same way that you did it the first time
Do I do the same technique if I want to just color the ends of my hair? An ombre without it being splotchy? I want to keep my virgin black hair and have deep Bordeaux burgundy hair. I will be using hello bubble foam hair dye. I won't be using bleach or pre-bleach lightener, I will just be applying the box dye on my hair directly if it helps.
Yes use this technique with your box dye. It will turn out great
I just used this technique to bleach my dark brown hair. First time ever dying my hair. And I am so pleased with itttt!!! Thanks for the hot tips xo
did you get any harsh lines? Also did u apply bleach all the way to the pony tail? I’m scared it’ll leave that harsh line lol
@@diyaghai1557 you should back comb so you don’t get harsh lines :)
Love this! I agree, my clients could give zero crap about what the foils look like in their hair. They trust my process. Although, I really dig the Framar foils in different colors because they're fun 🙂
Kathy absolutely they just want their hair doing the way that they want it and I am a big fan of them are too I’m right there with you 😁👍🏻
Right on about not being neat! It’s all about the results!

Brilliant! I did see something similar but he used 2 pieces of foil when the saturation was done on one side he fliped it over to saturate the other. Both simliar depending on length and thickness. Thank you.

If you do this without using foils, does it come out with a darker lift? I've never done this before but have a highlighting dye and bleach. I don't want to go too light yet. More a medium caramel colour.
Brilliant colouring technique, love watching yr tutorials.

Wonderful glad it was what you wanted Christine
I might try it to when ma manky old over bleached bits grow out
I really want to try this when my hair grows out to all virgin hair. I got it done at the salon two years ago and what I really wanted was like an ash brown balayage with more bleach saturation at the ends for extra brightness, but they bleached my whole head and gave me a shadow root with ash brown for the lengths. It looked great, until after a week when the dye completely faded out and I had an entire head of bleached orange hair. I went back and they recolored my whole head a medium brown color, but after a week once again the dye faded out and I was left to color my hair myself with permanent dye. I really want to get my hair done where my natural roots aren't bleached but I feel after that first experience I don't want to pay another $400 at the salon
Bleached hair does not hold onto deep pigments well. I usually do a step down approach. I go 1-2 shades darker with a color, then another 1-2 shades darker and then final color. That will usually add in all the colors that are missing and then a color sealer. Personally I like just bleached hair, as long as it all lifts well. I can't get any cosmetologist to do this. So here I am, attempting to do it myself.
This is how my hair looks now and I haven’t been able to touch mine up for months!!!!!
Excited for next week's glaze what a technique ! I love an easy and simple lightening process you get taught so many things in college how to highlights back to back and at at the end of the day some of my most creative colours come from being more sporadic and not so uniform! You do make me laugh who'd of thought you'd be teaching in your sunny garden in ya marigolds !! Can't be bad! Loved the result I would travel to Brighton to get my hair done after all this I would literally have any colour or cut could do with a change ! As a hairdresser I don't actually do much to my own just trim and roots 👍 another great video thank you James 😊
Yes Mandi there is always room for precision colouring and cutting but once you understand why and how you create precision techniques then you can use creativity to speed up the process is and that is exactly what I did with this technique as you mentioned. I would love to do your hair for you Mandi when this is all over 👍🏻

Stay safe and awesome, and God bless! 🥰
How'd it turn out?
@@desiree568 Well, since I'm TERRIFIED of bleach (bad experience in the past), I used a dye that lightens dark hair "without bleach" (regular dye doesn't strip hair color so the hair dyes that say they lighten dark hair without bleach, in reality, has bleach just not as much). At first, it really didn't show, but as I washed my hair, the color started showing more and it looks like a warm honey colour and I really like it. I might eventually use bleach in the future but so far, I love how it turned out.
I’m going to use loreal hicolor blonde for dark hair and hope for the best😂
Thank you for your teaching

For the first time in my life, i did domething with my light brown hair. I bleached it using your video. It came out great! Thank you so much! Now i need to find a good toner. Pale yellow/White isnt it 🙈
Wonderful so pleased it worked out well for you all the best James
Can i ask you a question? My Hair is pale yellow. I bleached my almost Virgin hair 2 times with 30 volume (and slept with olaplex 3 after each bleaching session. No hair fell off, and its still shiny. Today i used Fanola no yellow purple shampoo, and then Fanola ice toner 10 with 20 volume, but it didn't do anything. Im really confused now.
@@Thepolished_nails The only reason that the toner wouldn’t have worked is that the toner was too light for the hair for instance if your hair was a level nine and you’re trying to tone it with a level 10 then it isn’t enough town to kill off all the warmth in your hair so my recommendation is you drop down to a level nine toner and you’re probably have better results hope that helps all the best James

haha, this is what I call pony-tail balayage :) ; tried it once on myself after having watched a video of a diy ponytail balayage. the sectioning was a bit different. I found it difficult to remove the rubber bands in the end. I'm thinking currently of the technique to use on my eldest daughter when she goes back to blonde - as she absolutely doesn't want anything with stripes - a roots bright blonde with a strong moneypeice. this could be a simple and not time-consuming way. thank you for showing us this experiment!

Hello! Your video is very informative and I love the technique but I have a question, I also see a lot of videos just folding the foil, would it make a difference to the effect if the foil is scrunched up or folded? Thank you!

The great British back garden 😂 love it 😘 xx
Ha ha ha ha that sounds like a show 😁👍🏻
Could I dye my roots a darker brown while it's sectioned off also lighten my ends at the same time? I'm looking for a shadow root effect and grey coverage.
Yes 👍🏻
Mission accomplished ✔
The technique was easy and came out beautifully!
Hi I have asian black hair and I’m planning to bleach it in the same way. Will I be able to achieve the same results using the same technique?
Love you !!!!!!!!!
Ah Liz too kind 🤗
how come you didn't start from the back? Stylists always say to start from the back because it's easier, plus the hair int he front tends to be less healthy/more porous and takes to the bleach better than the healthier back hair which may need more time.
I wish my hairdresser could do this .
How would this work on brunette hair? Would it still look blended?
Also what would happen if you bleached twice, like left it in the ponytails, washed and bleached again?
Yes absolutely I would 😁👍🏻
And yes I have never done that but I’m assuming that’s totally possible I would say when you rinse off the first application that you would want to do it so that the water didn’t run onto your route area to match or that you made a very thorough job of rinsing out any bleach that had run onto the hair you didn’t want to lighten 👍🏻👍🏻
The Life Of Hair thanks so much! Love watching your videos!
