    I am completely blown away by this video. What a beautiful, way of showing what went into this song. I have a deeper appreciation for the song after watching this video. And what a bunch of great musicians.
    Also, I knew Lee was a great guitarist, but this accentuated what a great sense of rhythm she has.
    I was fascinated by the recreation of the suitcase drum kit as well.
    I hope Keith Richards and the rest of the Stones can see this. I think they would really love the video and probably have it bring back some sweet memories.
    P.S. Charlie Watts rules.

      Yes, they've always done it very differently live - they had to, because obviously they couldn't do it like the recording!

    Raised the hair on the back of my neck- been a huge Stones fan since I was a kid. Like many rock fans I had a period where “street fighting man” was part of my daily listening mix. Thanks for tearing it down and explaining how it was done. Great content! Filtering this track to the top of my rotation…Beggars and Exile two dessert island albums! Must have and must put on repeat.

    Lee, saw your comment on my vid. You did a FANTASITC job here, and did everything I wanted to do but couldn't. Amazing that you got a working philips 3320, I tried but couldn't find one. Really enjoyed this and it tells the full story very well. Great work

      Aww thank you! Your vid is great too for those who want to learn the guitar parts or may never have heard how the session happened! And yes, as I mentioned in the video, my Philips recorder was not working either, but luckily I have exactly the right friend who could fix it up! It was no easy task either - the belts had completely turned to goo and melted into the works, which is really common with these recorders. But my friend Paul spent many hours getting it into working shape so we could do this. So glad you enjoyed it! :)

      @@whattherock BTW, there’s always a BTW,😱 Don’t you think the mike was stuffed into the sound hole on the left side and out and bleeding with the practice drums right of centre. I was lucky to hear the master in 1979 and that’s how I recall it, I was stoned at the time though 😱

    • @whattherock
      @whattherock  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@cyclesgoff9768 Well, the mic isn’t stereo, so that wouldn’t be possible. They did sometimes record with the mic stuffed all the way into the sound hole, but from what I could divine by listening and from interviews, this particular session (not forgetting there were others) went more like the way we did it. It does begin with the cassette track all the way to the right side, but the drum you hear on the left is an overdubbed tom, not the cassette, though you still hear plenty of bleed through on the cassette from the toy drum kit. Also it’s likely there’s some ghosting in there from the track coming through the PA.
      Fact is they did a lot of demos this way, a lot of takes of each song too, and no two were done the same, because positioning of the instruments and mic and the recording and playback levels all affect the amount of distortion, balance of instruments, etc. So from our experience of this, I don’t think there’s any way anyone would be able to remember exactly where everything was set for the particular take that ended up being the one. We just did a bunch and picked the one that sounded closest.

    I’m 62 and started hearing the Stones from my older siblings at 4 ( (1965). I have been a fan all my life. I’ve seen them six times I’ve read countless books on them and was a member of the Brian Jones fan club in the early 11970s. I’d always heard Keith talk about this but never seen it replicated. But I have never heard a better version of this song. Every note and nuance is perfect. I’ve probably listened to this song at least twice a week since 1968 lo. I’ll bet if you did Yesterday’s Papers you’d include that little ‘ ding’. In the middle. Well done you have an incredible ear. I guess it comes with the territory. Really enjoyed that. Thank you. Peace from Montreal

    I do have a 1970 early small cassette player, did some strumming into it in 1972, doing a song called "The Pool Hayes Pub", aged 14. Not realizing, of course, what Keith and Charlie did a few years earlier. My little acoustic guitar was tuned slightly incorrectly, nearly right, but not quite and I strummed something that just sounded good. When I played it back, complete with the saturation, yes, the sound was marvellous. Well done here, Lee and everyone, a brilliant, faithful reconstruction of Street Fighting Man, to be saved in my playlist. Brilliant.
