  • Our sister Channel Perpetual Radio Networks published their episode of TestDrive Spotlight on the 2018 Lincoln Navigator Reserve, and we wanted to get more familiar with the rear entertainment system on this vehicle. • Return of Lincoln? | 2...
    The 2018 Lincoln Navigator Reserve has a $2,350 optional accessory for the rear entertainment package, which adds two 10" LCD monitors to the back headrests for centre row passengers to use. The system also comes with two IR headphones for those passengers, along with USB, HDMI, and wireless inputs.
    We wanted to find out what we could do with this rear entertainment system, since it doesn't include a DVD or BluRay Disc player, and relies entirely on the use of HDMI or USB inputs. When we threw a USB thumb drive on with some TestDrive Spotlight episodes nothing showed up. We realized after quite a bit of trial and error that the OS X Journaled USB thumb drive we used wasn't the right format, and needed to use NTFS or Fat32 Microsoft Windows formatted drives in order to work.
    We go over some of the troubleshooting we did, along with attempt to run an Xbox One S on the rear screens through the HDMI input and house-plug found in the centre console.

    We just purchased a 2019 and we had the same frustrations. To adapt, we purchased a HDMI to phone cable and can screenshare all our phone content directly to the screens. Quick, seamless, no lag.

    Try again without the HDMI connected. I ran into the same thing testing an Apple TV on a 2020 Yukon Denali. If i had the HDMI connected at the same time i tried to power up the AppleTV.. it would boot for just a few seconds & then cut off. So we hoped into a 2nd Yukon & it did the same... then i had the idea to not connect the HDMI cable 1st... and guess what.. it powered on just fine.. then i connected the HDMI cable & it worked like a champ. So that is the work around

      Interesting! I wonder if it has something to do with CEC with HDMI causing issues.

    Turn on(engine) the vehicle, Try again. Also a tip, it would be nice if you guys could show the monitor menus. Good video guys.

      The engine was running so that wasn't the issue. We tested this on a different vehicle (video being published now) and it worked fine.

      @DJKiDDKlashez 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      PRN_tech that's so weird?? The reason it won't turn on is because there isn't sufficient power or no power at all. Plug in a phone and see it works(wall outlet cable), if it does its a Lincoln Navigator problem. That's really odd. I bet the PS4 SLIM works.

    • @prn_tech
      @prn_tech  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      We were pretty confused about it also, which is one of the reasons we didn't bother testing it before filming. Definitely a power issue coming from the vehicle, but likely not a problem in the real world, I doubt many people are planning to run their consoles in their Navigators.

    If you want DVD playback there is a drive in the armrest... I suppose it could be for nav but pretty sure that is hdd based...

      I believe we discovered the drive in the front arm rest is only for audio CDs.

    I hate how new vechiles now only have the head rest on the back of the first row. Now the people in the 3rd row are out of luck. I wonder if you can install a aftermarket flip down monitor for the 3rd row or if the panoramic roof won't allow it. I can see my kids fighting to sit in the middle row instead of the 3rd..🤷🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️😒

    • @prn_tech
      @prn_tech  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Very good point about the third row. There are some vehicles we've driven on PRN_TestDrive that might have worked with a third-row screen as the pano roof ended above the second row and a second separate piece of glass covered the third row. I wonder if it's something manufacturers will look at if they continue to support DVD/BD players in cars.

    did u make sure u plugged in the HDMI into HDMI OUT and not HDMI IN

    • @prn_tech
      @prn_tech  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yup! Seems to be more of a problem with the power output from the built in power inverter. Some just don't work with all products, I tried to use the plug on a Chrysler Pacifica to run a ShopVac and it wouldn't work.

    1.8 amps x 115v = 207watts...
    Apparently real world load is about 170watts.
    Meanwhile a Xbox One S with its lower power GPU peaks around 80watts.
    Quite simply too much for the inverter.

    Can you play a Xbox on a Cadillac Escalade

    • @prn_tech
      @prn_tech  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We attempted to use the rear seat entertainment on the Escalade but found the screens in the back to be incompatible with most new HD/4K devices. We tried a Roku on the Escalade as it rendered 1/4 of the UI, as if it were expecting a larger screen or resolution.

    Really stupid that a premium vehicle, like the Navigator, is supplied with a 150 Watt 120 VAC inverter outlet. A vehicle needs at least a 1500 Watt 120 VAC inverter to run an occasional power tool or a vacuum cleaner.

    Mac OS “TEN” and “iPhone TEN” when talking about these Apple products. The X is not pronounced like a letter rather, a number. It’d be as absurd as saying “Super Bowl LEE”

      It took me a bit of trial and error to get it to work, but the power source might be the main issue. I had problems trying to get this setup to work on other vehicles due to the power inverter in the car.

    The TVs in that car are a waist of money you can buy 2 iPads and just keep them back their and plug them in with the USB ports to charge them and that would be a cheaper option

    • @prn_tech
      @prn_tech  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think that a lot of manufacturers recognize that, as many of the luxury brands allow you to just buy tablet holders instead. Overall its an easier solution than this to get content onto the screens.

    That is so dumb that Lincoln removed blu ray and dvd

    • @prn_tech
      @prn_tech  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I get why they did it, same reason Apple removed the headphone jack from their phones. They feel only a small number of buyers would want a BD drive in their Lincolns as people are moving towards USB/Cloud storage, and the cost savings for FoMoCo made it worthwhile. I don't necessarily agree with the decision though.

    I have the 18 Navigator and it blows the cardilac away in every way EXCEPT the shitty ass entertainment system. The movies stream poorly and always lose connection. For 90k you need a DVD player

    • @prn_tech
      @prn_tech  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      We experienced the same thing. Not that the Escalade was significantly better mind you, both could be improved. In fact the Chrysler Pacifica had one of the best rear seat entertainment systems we've used to date.

    • @chrisgraham2904
      @chrisgraham2904 ปีที่แล้ว

      The simple answer is to not purchase the rear seat player and screens from the factory. After market systems are far superior, with a DVD player and they are a fraction of the cost.

      Don't get all upset pal, we also tested this in a different vehicle which will be published in a few minutes and it worked, so it's a Lincoln Navigator problem. Relax.
