      NoOne ButMyself I think I need to do a video on it. The ONLY phone I've ever intentionally tried to damage was the Kyocera. I hate drop tests. They're a really poor test for phone durability...

    • @Testbug000
      @Testbug000 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yeah. I think it depends on luck... I've throw a 1020 into tile floor ~10 times in a row no problems face down... 10 minutes later, accidently dropped it on a corner and it bounced and screen broke. And there went my 1020 (well, for all usable purposes outside of as a camera)

    • @SomeGadgetGuy
      @SomeGadgetGuy  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      NoOne ButMyself LOL! Ouch. Poor 1020.
      That's kinda what I mean. Glass is a really interesting substance. During those 10 intentional drops, tiny stress fractures might have crept up, weakening the screen for the weaker bounce.
      The only way I'll take a drop test seriously is if each successive drop is performed with a new phone out of box to mitigate unseen damage from previous drops.

    First time I saw any of your reviews or videos. I liked it so much, I subscribed immediately after watching. I just got a G Flex 2 a few days ago. So far I love it! My phone immediately updated to Android 5.1.1, which supposedly fixes any overheating/throttling issues. (I'm not sure if that's true, but I hope so. I'm not a power gamer anyway.) I have to say I'm really in love with the form factor. I love the curve! Even in the G Flex 2, it's more subtle than I expected. You can see it, sure, but I had expected it to be even more noticeable. Personally, I feel that both LG and Samsung were not brave enough. The G4 should have the same form factor as the G Flex 2. Similarly, I feel that Samsung didn't need the "normal" S6, but should have went all in with the Edge design. Also, I too am a sucker for OLED displays and that was a selling point in favor of the G Flex 2. (However, in all fairness, I haven't seen the G4's display in person yet.) And the camera in the G4 is of course better. Yet, I'm not a professional photographer, so I am sure that I will have no complaints with the G Flex 2/G3 camera setup. The biggest bummer for me is the lack of a removable battery, but as you mentioned, there may be a reason for that considering the flexible nature of the phone. Additionally, I have owned many plastic phones, (including Samsungs) in the past, and I have to say that the G Flex 2's glossy back cover is by far my favorite. It's thick and doesn't feel cheap. It's smooth and comfortable, but yet not at all slippery. It seems to almost stick to my hand when holding it! And the back on my phone has a circular brushed pattern, (similar to some Asus Zen products) which I think looks great! Frankly speaking, I could not imagine the G Flex 2 in anything other than plastic, and I wouldn't want it in any material that was heavier and less flexible. It looks (and feels!) better in person than in photos. Finally, the clincher for me was the price. I'm currently living and working in Shanghai, and the fact that this phone came out months earlier than the G4, combined with the fact that this phone is not even sold officially in China (where LG phones are not popular anyway), allowed me to be able to buy this phone for about $375! At that price, I feel that this phone is a no-brainer! I'm absolutely satisfied and happy with my beautiful curved G Flex 2 - especially for that price! In fact, I'm looking forward to LG's next curved device, which in my opinion they could simply combine the next G Flex and G5 together into one amazing phone.

      +Steven James DeBlasi So glad to hear you're digging it! I feel this phone got a bad rap when it was first released because of the throttling issues, that I still feel wouldn't affect most users. I completely agree. I'm glad to see companies like LG taking more risks, trying to keep this fight interesting.

      +Bird Man Glad to hear it! I think the Flex got kind of an unfair rap on the Qualcomm 810 problem. Still one of the sexier phones released this year. I just wish it had the camera app from the G4.

      @mikebird5148 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      JuanBagnell Agreed %100 my dude, in my experience the G Flex 2 stays the coolest of ALL the phones I've had, the last time I used it, which was a few months back, it did have more lag/hick-ups than my HTC devices and OnePlus One, but it was nothing serious and it runs a much more demanding UI so I forgave it, I'm gona update it to the latest 5.1.1 build and I'm guessing it will be much smoother than it was before, but the damn curve design man, thats what draws me in, it's so comfortable to hold! Awesome reviews by the way, keep um coming!

    • @mikebird5148
      @mikebird5148 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Depends on what your looking for, the Flex 2 runs LG's user interface which has tons of features like Samsung's Touchwiz user interface, the M8 will preform just as fast , if not faster than the newer Flex 2, but like I said, it all depends on what you're looking for Tjeerd Veneno

    I'm a bit of spec nerd but I have to go with the G4 here given the flak reviewers had toward the SD810 found in the G Flex 2. Also the G4's camera software is what I have been looking for in a flagship phone. But either way I don't like LG's UI aesthetic which, in my opinion, won't seem to age well by looking all cartoon-ish and whatnot, but that's just me.

    • @SomeGadgetGuy
      @SomeGadgetGuy  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Bon Jorte Badiango It's tricky. I kinda think Google is walking that direction more with Material Design than individual manufacturers are now. Back in the day, Android was lean and Samsung gave us a cartoony interface on touchwiz. Now, manufacturers are making their skins leaner, and Google is giving us bright colors and pretty animations.

    • @jortuspelatus7364
      @jortuspelatus7364 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      JuanBagnell Yeah. Looking back, I can see that Google's aesthetic language for their mobile OS was a bit skeuomorphic and cartoony. Now everything's looking simpler, flatter and smoother. LG's UI right now is mostly like that, but a bit more playful and colorful, and I'm not fond of that look. At least, that's what I think.

    • @stevenjames1138
      @stevenjames1138 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Bon Jorte Badiango To each his own, but coming from a Samsung, I have to say that I genuinely like the design aesthetic on both stock Android with Material Design and on the latest LG UI. Personally, I happen to love the flat design and the colorful animations. (I also like the vivid, punchy colors on OLED displays too.) I don't like it too cartoony and I'm definitely not a fan of skeumorphism, but I do like the more modern aesthetic of Lollipop/Marshmallow and the LG UI. There no right or wrong here. Of course, this is all very subjective, but for me, I actually really like it.

  • @GARFONS0
    @GARFONS0 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    I still have a g2. Probably the best phone I ever owned. Would the g flex 2 be a good upgrade? I heard there were problems with 810 processor but wanted to see how your user experience is with it day to day. Its cheaper than the g4 so I'm looking to upgrade to it.

    • @SomeGadgetGuy
      @SomeGadgetGuy  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Garfield Ye It really depends on how you use your phone. Like I've mentioned on several videos, the 810 just doesn't seem to like being run for long periods of time. When it gets hot it throttles. As much as I really like the design of the Flex 2, if there's any way you can save up and move to the G4, I think that's a much better overall experience, especially moving from the G2. I don't think the camera on the Flex 2 is a huge upgrade over the G2 for example, but the G4 is a noticeable improvement.

    I am very much in agreement... If LG doesn't change up their style they risk being yesterdays phone. Android is reall at risk, they are getting very boring. Due to the high number of people that 'root' their phone. They need to listen. A 'flagship' phone MUST be just that. The latest and the greatest advancements available. For two phone to be so close to each other. The G4 & Flex2 are very different. I want to know why the phone with the updated core (810) is cheaper.
    The new toy on the block 'Symetium'. Now, this is a phone to be reckoned with.

  • @DhiscoStu

    I miss the weird neon type theme from the original flex on the 2. And the excessive battery: if anything the flex2 battery is.. How should put it.. Barely acceptable. And that's a shame. I doubt the G4 battery will be any better than the diabolical G3 but... ..well who can resist leather!

    • @SomeGadgetGuy
      @SomeGadgetGuy  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      DhiscoStu LOL Yeah. The OG Flex was good times. I wonder if LG will deliver on another big phablet.

    • @DhiscoStu
      @DhiscoStu 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      JuanBagnell Certainly a fan favorite :) Between the Flex2 and G4 which would you say has better overall battery life for "normal" use (eg web, music, social media and a smidge of video). I'm so torn between these two. I love the curve and oled on the flex, but the G4 seems the more grown up option with its better camera and more "controlled" performance.... I'm assuming both of them are miles ahead of the battery-life abomination of the S6 and frankly shaky G3? (pre-megathanks :D)

    • @SomeGadgetGuy
      @SomeGadgetGuy  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      DhiscoStu It's been really similar. In a controlled test the Flex 2 scored better, but in real world use I squeaked by with a little extra run time on the G4.

  • @Dovakeen79
    @Dovakeen79 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have the nexus 6 not happy with it the screen brightness sucks outside. I refuse to support Samsung taking away features pretending like it's a upgrade. Trading my n6 in on one of these which better choice I have heard bad things about the 810 that's in the flex but is the 808 going to be dated in few months.

    • @SomeGadgetGuy
      @SomeGadgetGuy  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dovakeen79 It's really tricky to try and predict what might happen moving forward. Maybe we can get a software update to improve throttling on the Flex? Maybe Apps will demand more power than the 808 can provide? We're continuously promised improvements and benefits, but honestly the only thing we can do is look at the evidence we have right now, and make a guess. It really is a good idea to look at what you use most.

    • @Testbug000
      @Testbug000 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dovakeen79 outdated for what? It will run regular stuff and 99.9% of games meant for phone for at least 2 years... Just because it doesn't run epenis benchmark as fast as other phones doesn't make it doesn't do everyday tasks fine.
      Besides, you rarely use the A57 cores for over a few seconds except in benchmarks....

    • @17thSzAdDaM
      @17thSzAdDaM 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      JuanBagnell Right now I guessing to stick with the ""buy the previous flagship" option considering the G3 or the Note 4. Difficult times right now as the G4 is so compelling. :)

    • @Testbug000
      @Testbug000 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      JuanBagnell Nothing in software is going to be able to fix the throttling, it's a hardware issue. Well, the whole problem really started when Quad core A15 became a thing... Dunno how H--Kyro will perform from Qualcomm. However, I think A12/17 or A53 should be the cores used in smartphones currently.
      No need for A57 cores that can draw over 1.5 W each at 2Ghz.

  • @mymocs61
    @mymocs61 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Honestly, lg needs to either make phones with thinner bezels or smaller screens. I don't get why they try to make the phone bigger screen bigger and the bezels! To me, the phones look really cheap.

    • @SomeGadgetGuy
      @SomeGadgetGuy  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      mymocs61 Really? I've found the screen to bezel ratio is pretty decent on the G4. Maybe not as good as on the G3, but still better than the iPhone 6+...

    • @mymocs61
      @mymocs61 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      yeah, but the original g series had a marketing goal of thin bezels thus moving the buttons to the back and having a larger screen on a smaller body. Its like they completely ditched that idea and made a cheap looking phone.

    • @SomeGadgetGuy
      @SomeGadgetGuy  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      mymocs61 I wouldn't say they completely scrapped it. It's just the reality of having a decently large battery, engineering the extra space to be able to remove the back plate, building in the amount of surface area to properly mount a curved glass display, and come in at a lower price point than the GS6. Compromises had to be made, and the size ballooned a bit, but it's still a fairly well balanced handset.

    • @mymocs61
      @mymocs61 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      lol the g2 had a large, removable battery and a removable backplate. And it needed a larger bezel for a curved screen, put that on the g flex. If their putting compromises to this phone, it should not be considered their "flagship" phone

    • @SomeGadgetGuy
      @SomeGadgetGuy  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      mymocs61 You could pry off the G2 back plate but it wasn't designed to be removable, it had a smaller 5.2 inch screen, no memory card slot, and a flat screen.
      You don't seem to understand what "compromises" means. All phones have compromises.
      If you could charge $10,000 for a phone, you could make all the things you're talking about impossibly slim, have two day battery life, no bezels, and a 4K screen, but THEN the compromise would be having a HUGE price tag.
      The Galaxy S6 is slimmer and smaller, but the compromise is having a smaller battery, non-removeable backplate, and no memory card slot. Should the GS6 not be considered a flagship phone now too? What exactly IS a flagship phone with no compromise?
