They fought discrimination and yet fought bravely for this country. They should always be remembered. 👍

My uncle, my grandfather. Thank you for this film. Also please check out the documentary "For the Sake of the Children" a film about generations affected by the Japanese internment camps, by my mother Marlene Shigekawa.

My father commanded Fox Company 442nd RCT and many of his soldiers were in the 1951 Go For Broke movie. I went to many Fox Company Reunions and met many veterans and always thanked them for their US military service. I was told that my father moved his family to Manzanar, California as a US Army Sergeant and really felt bad about seeing his family in Manzanar. I am glad that I was born after WWII and did not have to live in Manzanar.

For a US propaganda movie of the era, it is surprisingly good. At least it emphasizes the right points. The men of the 442nd were amazingly courageous, both physically (in combat) and morally (in volunteering when they themselves and most of their families were illegally incarcerated in concentration camps in the US). They helped rid the world of fascism and helped improve the United States live up to its promises. We still have a long way to go, but these men and their families (and the Japanese Americans who resisted conscription on principal) helped make Americans more free.
Now fascism is raising its ugly head again, and Japanese Americans are again fighting for a better future.

@@patricknorton5788 Exactly. Socialists and communists and race baiters in liberal universities are the true fascists nowadays just like when communist Stalin allied with Hitler from 1939-41 to start WWII.

My grandfather and great uncle were volunteers out of Topaz (442nd). Nothing but respect for these guys and their families. Is there anything in this movie about the mainlanders who volunteered from the internment camps, or is it mostly about the Hawaii and the story of the formation of the 100th?

This movie describes what happened in Hawaii to a group of AJA university students right after the Pearl Harbor attack being hastily assembled in a civil defense unit called the Territorial Guard by the governor. Normally, the National Guard would serve this role, but the Hawaii National Guard had been federalized into the Regular Army in late 1940. People in Washington, D.C. were alarmed that this civil defense group had so many AJAs that it forced the military governor to discharge all AJAs. The disappointed AJA students who were then persuaded by Hung Wai Ching to offer their services as a civilian labor unit to the military became the Varsity Victory Volunteers (VVV). The VVV so impressed the Assistant Secretary of War John J. McCloy when he visited Hawaii that it was cited as one of the primary reasons along with the impressive training record of the 100th Infantry Battalion at Camp McCoy for the authorization of the 442nd RCT in January 1943. The closing scenes recreate the iconic 442nd photo at Iolani Palace of the 2,600 chosen out of the 10,000 who signed up in Hawaii to join the new unit. The movie ends there, and the story of the 100th Infantry Battalion and the 442nd would require a sequel. encyclopedia.densho.org/Hawaii%20Territorial%20Guardencyclopedia.densho.org/Varsity%20Victory%20Volunteers encyclopedia.densho.org/442nd%20Regimental%20Combat%20Team

I'll give you and your family one week to pack only what you can carry, lose everything you own, get on board a train, pull down the shades, end up four hours later in the middle of a desert, walkthrough barb wire fence, and stay imprisoned for four years. Oh, and then walk out and make a High budget film. Good luck.
