    Love this analysis! That world 1-1 breakdown has so much going on and it's amazing to see how every asset was placed and designed with so much intention. Thank you for sharing, would love to see more of this!

    My daughter is a massive Mario fan. At 8 years old, she nearly completed Mario Odyssey on her own, but has trouble with Mario 64. She loves Super Mario Maker but gets hung up on the original Mario. She's a complex for sure, but it does reflect the fact these games are made to be played by anyone of any age at any time. Why else would a 35 year old game still be the basis for platformer game theory if it wasn't good? Why would Super Mario 3 be one of the basis for level game design, or music composition? Mario is immortal and timeless because it literally changed the way we played video games on the home consoles. It brought it back from the dead after Atari killed it, even though it has since apologized profusely over the decades lol. Sure there are countless Mario clones out there, each with their own flare, but that is not necessarily a bad thing. Basing your game on a legend like that proves how well built it was and how it stands the test of time.

      Couldn't have said it better myself, these games really are immortal and pillars of the industry.

    Super mario bros for the nes was the first game i ever played. I still remember to this day how the pixels displayed on the the television screen was pure magic to me.
    I guess now that I am working on game development I should go back and truly study everything I can about it.

    OK, I was on the fence before with Blood and Mead (generally don't enjoy platformers that much anymore), but if you're putting even half that much thought into your design, I'm in. I always wondered why Mario was so much fun, while later platform games were exercises in repetition and muscle memory.

    I wouldn't mind a full series covering the rest of the game.
    I know it sounds a bit excessive. But everyone talks about Level 1-1. No one talks in depth about the other levels. So if you have stuff to say about the rest of the game, go for it!

    Also, the difficulty progression in-level and level to level is almost perfect.
    Even though sometimes f.e. Super Mario World 3 had some mid game levels that suddenly spiked in difficulty, the overall difficulty curve still was well done.

    All games in that era, including Super Mario Bros, included a handbook where EVERYTHING (enemies, power-ups, buttons, etc) was explained. So the statement "Miyamoto never insults the player like this" doesn't make sense because at that time ingame tutorials didn't exist yet (afaik) so he did "insult the players" by providing a handbook and explaining everything...

    • @zappy7393
      @zappy7393 ปีที่แล้ว

      "All" is a very general statement...especially when I brought the original Mario and it didn't come with said handbook...
      Plus, you didn't need to read a handbook to play the game. It was an optional extra.

    • @gestrandetdes5172
      @gestrandetdes5172 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@zappy7393 That you didn't get a handbook is irrelevant, because a handbook exists that came with the game. "ALL" is a general statement because GENERALLY ALL games came with a handbook and nobody's arguing whether you needed a handbook or not to play the game.

    There's another design decision here that people don't realize. Almost none of the jumps require mario to jump the exact maximum extent that he can jump, that is they're all much less than the max, and instead they do things like throw obstacles at you while you're making these non-extent jumps, this gives the player agency in how they work through the obstacles. This was a conscious decision the designers made across the entire Super Mario Brothers series.
    When these games do require exact precision, it's usually for something optional, like an extra secret or reward.
    The other thing they started doing in Super Mario Brothers 3, is that every single level introduces one new thing that the previous levels didn't have yet, as a way to train all the new concepts to the player.

    First, excellent video. Watch it if you haven't yet, you'll learnst things a game dev should wanna know. And now...
    Ah yes, the game the flabby girlfriend-less damaged-by-sunlight kids spent their childhoods on. While we stuck to the pinball arcades where the physics were real, and knowing when and how much English to apply to the body of the machine you had in your arms, er hands, to achieve your desired balls vs bumpers movement made you either a King among boys and Casanova to the ladies, or a forgettable wannabee who ends up going still because it's still better than sitting around orange-lipped in a Cheese Puffs Mario Brothers hoagie-fest in some lame parents gauche shag-carpeted den.
    In our day, you either drank lemonade and orange drink, or you were bumming beers, cigarettes and roaches from the big kids until you got to be a big kid, when the little buggers would bug you for beers, cigarettes and roaches. See, thing is, a lot from both camps made it to college, where some were just beginning adulthood, and others were already men and women in many ways the yoots of today can't even imagine.

  • @rooneye

    Mario 1 still LOOKS great aswell. It hasn't aged at all. It's like J-Lo or Jennifer Aniston. Super Mario Bros is a MASTER PIECE. So is Street Fighter II (again hasn't aged at all). Those are the two most seminal games of all time IMO. Doom is another I guess though I hate it (plus it's aged badly) lol But the book is AWESOME "Masters of Doom".
    Carmack and Romero are just legends up there with Miamoto, but the guys who made SFII (do you even know who they are before I name them? Probably you don't unlike Mario and Doom) aren't household names like the guys I just mentioned. Which is a travesty. Noritaka Funamizu, Akira Nishitani and Akira Yasuda aren't names many of us would recognize. But they fucking made SFII and it was one of the most important games of all time. SPECIALLY to arcade owners! My god lol stopped a lot of them going out of business and reinvented the arcade scene.
