A lot of mentions over the years has been said about the famous 1958 Premiership win over Melbourne that day. It was true that Collingwood had not beaten Melbourne in the past ten games we played against them previously . The best result was a draw in 1957. The losses go back to the start of 1956 up to the Second Semi loss of 1958 in that Final series. Melbourne had beaten Collingwood twice in 1958. The AFL records i started to look up go back to 1946 post war matches .From 1946 to 1950 there was seven losses and two wins . From 1951 to 1955 there were seven wins and one loss in our favor . From there Melbourne began a long list of nine wins and one draw up to the 1958 Grand Final . From 1946 to 1958 Collingwood had 17 losses , 1 draw and 10 wins. The great rivalry has diminished somewhat over the decades however the famous 1958 Premiership win was truely against all odds.
Thanks so much Rhett . I love the football from the late 1950’s to the late 1970’s. Was there video kept from Football Inquest with Michael Williamson?
In an attempt to increase sales of the football record, players in the 1958 Grand Final had to wear different numbers to what they had worn all season and throughout their careers, which is why Barassi is wearing #2
Incorrect. The League held the copyright on players' numbers, which were to be published only by the record, but on the morning of the match a newspaper violated the copyright by printing the numbers & the league ordered that every player have their number changed. It was an IP issue.
@@sentimentalbloke185the IP issue that you mention was all about sales of the football record. It had nothing to do with the legal integrity of the game.
@@gotleft Copyright is intellectual property by any measure, & the numbers were changed to protect the VFL copyright. This issue arose a number of times over the years as the VFL aggressively policed its copyright. You are wrong, it wasn't to sell more copies of the record. What does 'legal integrity of the game' even mean.
One of our great club’s greatest ever wins. For those who don’t know their history by winning this game we stopped the demons equally our record of 4 flags in a row. 20 magpie heroes
@@michaelrapson very fortunate the Wobblies didn't start in 58 after the Demons smashed them in the semi final and then have either another thrashing or (here) a late run in the final quarter for more humiliation, especially after the 55 & 56 SF and GF horror shows incredibly were duplicated again in the 58 Finals and been spared a potential Demon hat trick of dackings in 57
Born the week after this Grand Final, magnificent footage reminding me how old I am. 😊
GOLD! Many thanks!
Thanks for posting this!!!!
One of the greatest underdog wins of all-time.
Collingwood supporter no doubt?
Love seeing so many torps!

Do you have any footage from the 1957 grand final?
Ironically, Melbourne’s last goal in this GF was also kicked by Neil Crompton.
Does the full game exist anywhere? Or did they just turn the cameras on in the last quarter?
They only broadcast the last quarter live, all 3 stations operating at that time. This is Ch 7's broadcast with Tony Charlton commentating.
I'm a passionate Collingwood man but that is the dreariest last quarter of any grand final I've seen!

The skill level made the game look like an under 12 local football match.
@@RobjS-y8o It was a wet year and the ground was badly cut up and muddy. And the players all had day jobs, so they weren't pros.

I'd still bet against my team North. Either team would have a chance 😅
Handball the bloody the thing! 😆
Was probably like hand balling a brick.
The wet ground brought Mel undone or else they would have won 5 cups in a row
🖤🤍
Bloody terrible spectical.
