“They SHOULD give you informed consent”, instead of forcing people into a corner or making them feel that there are no other options. They know what they’re doing too, unfortunately. It’s not that some of them don’t, and this goes for all medical professionals, they know that informed consent is the right of the patient, however, it makes their life easier to just not have to take the time explaining things, plus, when there are explanations given, I’ve often witnessed procedures/drug risks denied or minimized. It’s a shame!
Ok, something I've been thinking about (as I've seen in a few births over the years) is what if the provider doesn't honestly answer the BRAINS questions? Mainly, I've seen risks massively underplayed - for something like breaking water, for example. As a doula, I've heard providers say 'Oh, there are no risks for breaking water!' I think asking for time to consider is always helpful, and following intuition! The goal is to feel comfortable and at peace with decisions made in labor. But any tips to ensure you get a complete and honest answer?
This is a great question! The truth is that you won't actually know if you are getting an honest answer if you haven;t studied these topics (through reading or childbirth education classes). So that means that provider choice is SO important. You want to choose a provider/practice that is trustworthy. Asking good in depth question during prenatal appointments should give you some insight. ALSO, hire a doula if you can!!
Grab the BRAINS handout here supportingher.teachable.com/p/handouts/
You as the patient actually have the right to conformed consent prior to ANY procedure!

Hello Alice, I find the B.R.A.I.N.S. concept quite helpful. Did you come up with it yourself or is it quoted from an original source ?
I don’t know where the concept began!
