    Having a student fly toward themselves is a great way for them to cross the pilot line and end up in the pit area. I take my students out to the center of the runway (when no one is flying), have them look down the center line, and locate a landmark on the horizon. I tell them that if they turn final with that landmark under their plane, they’ll be lined up with runway and will just need to fly it to runway in front of them.

      The landmark on the horizon works well, and I should have mentioned it. But it does require momentarily focusing away from the plane, which may be a bit unnerving for some. Thanks for the comment!

    At 99% of model Fields the only Ronway most Pilots care about & announce for Takeoff & landing are Left/Right So appreciate your Description.

      Thanks. I would do the same at the field with other pilots flying. It's just on a video I find it helpful to know how much of a crosswind the pilot is dealing with, so I like to provide that for others.

    Thank you for the instructions. Like you, I see my rc airplanes as airplanes and not toys. To me they are small airplanes with the pilot being outside the aircraft controlling by remote control rather than inside the cockpit. When 'in cockpit' planes crash people usually die. When my rc airplane crashes I do not die. I walk away. I walk 'a way' out in the field and pick up the pieces. My planes fly in the same air in-cockpit planes do. They are subject to the same principles of flight. Like the in-cockpit planes the turn on final is a real danger zone. I think it accouts for more crashes at our rc field than any other thing.
    I like your approach to rc flying. So I have like-ed and subscribed.

      Welcome aboard! Thank you for your thoughtful comment. Having flown both I like the ability to walk away from a crash. Or, as you pointed out, take a long walk to the crash. That's a good time to think about what went wrong and what could be done differently next time.

    High wind taxiing, and even rolling out on to high speed taxiways is a complex ordeal that requires muscle memory and is extra demanding on airline pilots. Every turn you make means you have to transition your control surfaces throughout it to keep the aircraft stable in the event of an unforeseeable wind gust.
    Btw that private runway is to die for. Wish I had a property like that 👍👍

      Sorry, by "home airfield" I meant my home club. The property is leased by the club. I used to compete at club airfields throughout the Midwest, so I'm used to thinking of this airfield as my "home" base.

    I use a mix to raise the flaps from landing flaps to takeoff flaps when my throttle is above mid-stick. I call it my “Poor man’s TOGA switch”..

    • @rcnfo1197
      @rcnfo1197  ปีที่แล้ว

      Cool idea! I'll have to try that. I've forgotten to raise flaps a couple times. Thanks for the suggestion!

    • @txkflier
      @txkflier ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rcnfo1197 Also, some folks think the flap>ele mix is to prevent ballooning or allow the plane to fly level with power. It isn’t; it’s to set the descent rate on final..

    • @rcnfo1197
      @rcnfo1197  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@txkflier That makes sense, if you're using only one mix to accomplish both. I talked about trimming for airspeed in Part 1 on my aircraft setup. I use a separate trim that only executes when I switch from Normal flight mode to Landing. I can adjust that trim separately from the mix for flap deployment. That way I can do a slow flyby with flaps at a different speed than my typical approach. The reality is, my up trim for landing cancels out most of the down flap to elevator mix on the Avanti.
