    My grandad was French and I have citizenship but I never learn’t the language growing up and felt cut off from my identity and a faker in a lot of ways. In lockdown I swapped courses and unis in august too!! Swapped to French and now Im stumbling my way through a French degree to move to Paris for my year abroad x

      @@es2817 i’m sorry i didn’t see it till now. I’d say that me not knowing a lot about France/Paris and coming a little bit uninformed helped me a lot! Because all I can see on the internet is very negative and I feel it might build up sense of fear even before coming to France. I enjoyed my time so much there and it was such an amazing learning lesson for me. It would’ve helped a lot if I knew french but also being in that environment forced me to understand the language (even a little bit). So be open-minded, brave and soak in all that you can from this experience. You’ll back to it forever 🫶

    I didn’t realise we come from a very similar language background! I’m half French too (mum french and dad english) my mum spoke to me in French growing up but i always responded back in English. I studied both French and Spanish at Uni of Bath and loved it but felt a bit of a fraud as people on my course kept saying “aren’t you bilingual already?” And as much as i wanted to be, I wasn’t and wanted to go to uni to study langauges to further improve my level. I discovered your channel a few weeks ago and loving the content! 🥰

      That´s a bit passive aggressive more than not understanding having parents from different backgrounds doesn´t automatically mean you get two languages. People would look after me while growing up and my parents went on business trips and some of them spoke other languages. Languages we know are more what we´re exposed to and not at all something that just happens out of the blue by association with someone speaking the language who doesn´t speak it with us or very little.

    I found you recently and fell in love with your videos and how joyous they are. I'm half and half as well, my mother is from Paris and my father is American/Argentine, but I grew up in the States. When you described your relationship to the French language with your mom, I completely related!! My family speaks French, I understand the language, but I find it hard to express myself because I'm not used to speaking it. Watching your videos now, and how well you speak the language, gives me hope! I'm also a history major, well art history but I've loved seeing you study art history (p.s. completely agree that some of the guys in the paintings are very cute haha). Like you, I feel quite french and I see myself back in france (or at least back in europe). Anyway, I'm so glad I found you and your channel!

    I have no clue why TH-cam recommended me this video, but I recognize in your life story some elements of mine: my wife is Dutch, I am French, and I have two young daughters. As they are growing up in a Dutch environment, they speak to me in mix composed of 70% Dutch and 30% French. I've observed they tend to opt for the simplest/less complicated word: for example, 'auto' instead of 'voiture'. Was it the same for you when you grew up? Speaking mostly in French at home, having French cartoons on TV + Disney movies in French have helped a bit. I see also they do much more efforts when we visit my French family, to opt for the adequate French word and try to correct their syntax. How was it for you when you met your relatives on your mum's side?
    Anyway, thank you for this video, I feel a bit better. I hope they'll also become as fluent as you are!

I am doing French A level and have been offered a place at the University of London Institute in Paris (UK uni but in Paris) for French and International Relations, I will probably go if I get the grades but Im still slightly unsure because if I study in England I can do a joint degree of French and Japanese as im not fluent in Japanese but I'd really love to be, It wouldnt really be possible for me to go to University in Japan without at least a year of intensive language learning since its so much harder and different to English, but I could study in England (not really sure if I will be fluent tho) or just attend language school in Japan after uni in France.. your experience sounds amazing tho and I really love mainland Europe

    J'adore cette video! I moved to Toulouse at the start of last year and can 100% relate with the 6pm curfew - it took like months to even be able to meet people and then to have actual friends soooo much longer.
    I also love how in England we learn one language at GCSE or A Level and we're like 'oh I'm so cultured bonjour' yet everyone I know here is at least fluent in two languages and probably knows another 1-2 really well :') I'm jealous of you studying both French and Spanish!

    Is there a way to study abroad without going to a college in a different country? Life for example, do you know any colleges in America that have programs that allow students to study in a different country for a short period of time ( 3-6 months)
    I love learning languages and I want to study abroad but I also would like to get a degree in America. Is that possible? Do you know any profession that I can go into that entails that?

      @tocrossanocean ปีที่แล้ว

      This is definitely possible! Ask your American university about their study abroad programs and they should be able to help you out! If not, there are other programs available in the US where you can travel as a student (like over a summer)!

    how did you get your grades translated please help :)

    • @tocrossanocean
      @tocrossanocean ปีที่แล้ว

      Most universities have a « grade translation » system they follow! You can ask your home university to send you a copy of your grades and their system equivalents (for France for example) - if not, normally your future university can help with this too or will accept your grades on a sort of transfer credit system 😊
