Painting the Mill

- Putting a top coat of paint on the Horizontal Milling Machine. I am considering scraping the bearing surfaces, so any tips for feedback is greatly appreciated! I may try to buy a hand scraper and give it a go. I will need a precision surface plate and some stones. In the meantime I will begin preparing to clean up the knee and will get some adjustable feet for the mill.
Its looking good!
I'd suggest that you don't scrape it, at least not yet. Get the machine together and working again first and decide if there is enough wear to justify the months if work that it will take to recondition those ways. Depending on what you're trying to do with the mill, it's current condition might be entirely adequate.
I have a Harding UM horizontal mill and it has noticeable wear in the ways for the knee, but at this point I don't need the extra 0.001" or so of precision that I would gain from the exercise. Someday I think it would be a fun project, but I have plenty of other projects that I cam do in the meantime which need a functional mill
I second this, looking at the lower vertical column it appears that there may even be some original flaking (those crescent moon marks) that still exists which would indicate that there isn't really any need to do any scraping. The top half, maybe, but honestly the amount of money and equipment needed to do scraping is not a cheap endeavor.
Unless you are using this as an excuse to get into handscraping, in which case, go for it!
Thank you for the advice! I greatly appreciate it! I have no experience with machining. I do like the idea of getting it together and taking some measurements to see how tight it is anyway. It will save me lots of time, frustration, and energy.
Most likely, I will end up selling this to put toward a vertical knee mill.
I am not into the machine much - I will take your advice and just get it put back together so I can start learning more about machining :)
