TailGator generator 63024 vs 63025 comparison - Which Harbor Freight Generator to buy?

  • Harbor Freight has two item numbers for their TailGator 900 watt portable 2-cycle generator. There is a 63024 and a 63025. These different item numbers are manufactured at different facilities and have a few quality control and part differences as well as packaging differences.
    I have previously covered the Harbor Freight StormCat 900 watt portable generator extensively. There is a playlist available that covers the testing and results of my experience with the StormCat:
    Playlist: • Storm Cat Generator
    Based on my experience, it appears that the new TailGator #63024 is the equivalent of the older StormCat 69381, and that this would be the one to select when choosing a generator. That's not to say that you would have issues with the 63025, as it appears to have improved over the older 60338 quality, but still has lower quality finishing than the 63024.
    In short,
    StormCat 60338 = TailGator 63025
    StormCat 69381 = TailGator 63024 (recommended)

    Thank you been looking at picking up one of these for a backup and would have never realized there was that much of a difference. Kinda like their bar clamps same look but the blue handled ones are better made than the black handled. I'm going to pay closer attention to this type of thing in future.

    My 63024 has been a great generator, especially after break in, have over 100 hours on the original spark plug, just upgraded to e3 spark plug 3.22, it starts easier now. I have run over 900W loads no problem. I use high quality marine TCW3 oil.

    I have the old Chicago Pneumatic blue generator purchased in 2009 , manufactured by Yangke still powering a lot of my electric powered tools and lawn and garden electrical tools . The secret to the longevity is 93 octane fuel with Staybil , quality 2 stroke oil mixed properly , an in line Briggs and Stratton fuel filter , put a real air filter that fills the entire filter chamber and keep it clean and slightly oiled , change the plug boot and change the spark plug , I use a NGK nickel BP5ES no problems so far . Make sure you brake in the generator properly , turn it off with the fuel cock and let the fuel bowl empty and drain any remaining fuel if you are not going to use it far a few months or longer . Always start it at full choke and it won't kick back at you if it is still hot when trying to restart it if you needed to turn it off . Engage the pall on the starter pull before pulling to start , never jerk it . I purchased a 63024 and am going to follow the same procedure on the new one , your info was very helpful in my decision , bought it on sale $84.99 , Thanks .

But i found a replacement cheap on eBay. the little gen. got me thru running our fridge during hurricane Matthew and a few other ice storms and power outages over the years.If you take care of it, for the most part it will last.

    We bought one even though we got a Powermate and a craftsman but this one is nice with it's small compact size and price we got ours on sale and we use it on a harbor freight pole saw. I picked up a 63024, I already have a 60338 (about 4 hours on it & yes it's knocking too). After changing the plug, boot & adding the same hour meter I found that the 63024 just runs smoother (from 1st pull) than the 60338. A noticeable difference really. I'll keep both, if I can get 281 hours out of the '38' it's worth it. Thanks for all the great research & testing. Nice Job....

    The decision was kind of made for me. The 63024 is all that is available at my local Harbor Freight. I had to pick through the pile as most of the boxes looked like someone ran a forklift into them. I needed something to put a charge into a jump starter to run a CPAP in power outage situations and camping. This should do the trick!

    • @eddielikesfishing
      @eddielikesfishing 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have a cpap machine too. I was thinking about getting a 12 volt lithium battery and a power inverter for power outages. The only downside is the cost as the Tailgater is much cheaper. The upside is you don't have to run extention cords because it's inside, and you don't have to worry about someone stealing the generator while you're sleeping.

      My advice is clean it out as best you can take the gas tank off make sure there's no rust in it and if there is put a bunch of nuts and bolts and some gasoline in and shake it up until there's no more rust before you put the gas tank back on check for spark but also check to make sure that no other wires are shorting out underneath the gas tank causing any Sparks and last but not least after all said and done and it won't start still just take off the pull cord and use a drill give it a first start let it run for a while and it should run with one pull after that if all is well. You may need a new coil pack if there's no spark or a new Magneto but both are under $20 each at Harbor Freight online

    I just bought the TailGator. I put about 16 oz of Trufuel 50:1 into the tank and I must have tried 50 pulls with the choke on and off. I pulled out the spark pull to make sure that it was getting spark. After a few more tried it would start up but then die. If I would let it sit for a 20 seconds, it would start up again and die. I then put the full 32 oz of fuel in and it then started running. I let it run for about 30 minutes with no load and then I was going to put a light load on it for another 30 minutes. I was using a fan for the load. Probably under 300 watts. But once I put the fan on it ran for about 60 seconds then died. I started back up and it died again after a few seconds. The next time I started up and it started to die, I put on the choke and it started running again but I believe it eventually died. I can open up gas cap and I can see gas right below the screen. It seems like it is not able to get enough gas. Any ideas before I return it and maybe try another one? If it had something to do with spark plug I don't see how turning on choke would make it run better. And after running for 30 minutes, adding choke should not make it run better. Thoughts anyone?

    • @KevCentral

I use Lucas 2-cycle oil in these generators and have had excellent results, but any quality 2-cycle oil will work. I can't say what the results of high octane would be. I use non-ethanol 87 octane. I do know that variances in octane affect the burn range of the fuel. That can affect the cylinder head temperature, so be careful. Good luck!

      There are variations of the genny where it has a tank with two caps for gas and kerosene. Wonder where we can get that tank and how it's being proportioned.
      Reason why I'm so obsessed with mixing Diesel or Kerosene is that it extends the run time considerably. Very handy when you're in the middle of nowhere and the nearest station is one hour away. And these E10 gas is so bad for these little engines and lowers the mileage per fill up.
      Two stroke engines are very simple, light, robust and can probably handle diesel/kerosene better than four strokes.
      Thanks again; you've saved me from several trips and aggravation in returning the bad models; sure appreciate that!

      +mountainman The Tailgator is capable of running a small 5000 btu unit of it is one of the lower amperage models (I've seen them as low as 4 amp.). That said, if it's for anything other than short emergency use I would recommend against the Tailgator as a power source for an air conditioner. The Predator 2000 or 4000 would be far better suited for that role.

    • @KevCentral
      @KevCentral  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +mountainman For an all day everyday generator I'd plunk down the funds on something better than anything at Harbor Freight. That said, if you're wanting something from HF and want to maximize dollar value vs performance with the ability for quick replacements (if needed,) then the Predator 4000 would be a better choice. It's larger, but far more capable.

    • @danburch9989
      @danburch9989 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      A 5000 BTU AC will need about 350 watts to run (no problem here). But to start the compressor, that may need up to 1000-1200 watts for a second or two. This generator cannot provide that surge requirement (max surge 900 watts). I would suggest you find someone who can verify the capability before spending money on it.

    What about the decibel levels? I don't think a black gas cap makes a generator better or worse than a green gas cap. Personally, I prefer NOT to have the extra housing around the spark plug wire because if your having troubles with your generator and your not getting spark at the plug, you can visually see the condition of the plug wire, with the housing, you can't . This means you may be looking further in troubleshooting than what you would normally do if you could see the obvious

    Have you heard of the sportsman gen2000? They have it on amazon for $150 and it's rated 1400/2000 peak and has 2 outlets. Seems like it may be a better deal than this. ? Really been looking at getting a cheap portable generator and just found this option..

    • @KevCentral
      @KevCentral  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +mixwell1983 I haven't seen one in person, but I'm familiar with the generator design. One thing to note is that this isn't an inverter generator, so it isn't rated to output the clean power needed to safely hook up electronic devices. It certainly puts out more power per $ if the cost/worth of an inverter isn't factored, but is also twice the size and almost 3x the weight of the Gen1000i. For my uses the size and weight of a portable generator and the sine wave is as important as the power output. If weight isn't an issue and if you don't plan on hooking up sensitive devices I'm confident, based on the initial quality of the gen1000i, that it would be a decent generator for the money. I would love to get my hands on more Sportsman branded products to see if their entire line is consistent. The Gen1000i appears to be very well made and didn't have that cheap plastics smell that many lower cost products tend to have. Good luck!

      KevCentral thanks for feedback. I live in los angeles so power outages dont last many days. I have a few ice chests for food, the tailgator i was thinking to run some leds inside and maybe with a surge protector a tv. I found a wen 56180 model thats 4stroke, 1400/1800 for $180 and has 2 outlets. I was thinking perhaps that maybe enough juice to give me an option to power my fridge if i desired and give an option to power more if needed. I saw a video someone posted running a fridge, tv and fan but i would have to see the surge watts because from what im reaearching is with a fridge you can't go just on running watts since the motor kicking in maybe 2-3x the running watts. I guess the tailgator with ice chest is a working option but for another $80 i could get the wen which is still way cheaper than other brands. Just trying to get some idea if you were in my spot which youd choose. I gotta say ive watched about every storm cat or variant name generator like this and im really digging it, i also keep finding other options that are at an attractive price point also.

    • @KevCentral
      @KevCentral  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +mixwell1983 Is size an issue? If it's not you may want to consider the Predator 4000. If you're looking for something small, based on the loads you mentioned, the Sportsman 2000 you previously commented on would be a far better option than the tailgator or 1400 watt generator.

      The different stock numbers helps HF to identify the manufacturer in case on has a high failure / return rate.

      AgentJeffy ..... so you traded one cheap failed generator for another soon to fail piece of junk? Smart move.

    Can't we pack this generator muffler with some fiberglass insulation to make it quieter?

      +Agent Jeffy 2-cycle engines have tuned exhausts. Packing it with any material would result in a change in the engines rich/lean mixture and could easily overheat or choke the engine.

      KevCentral did you ever compare the 24 and 25 longevity and reliability to see which one came on top?

      +Agent Jeffy No. since this video was made they’ve basically equalized, so one should do as well as the other. The 25 model has made significant improvements over what it was during this video. Basically. If they make it past the first few hours they will likely run for hundreds and hundreds of hours without much problem (assuming a quality oil that is properly mixed is used.)

    Now I want to replace the Chinese receptacle with a better quality dual outlet with a GFI. It seems pretty simple to me. Has anyone else done this?

      I just plug a power strip into mine, then run off of that.
