This week is the Jewish holiday of Succot (Tabernacles). We sit in a succah which is, in my case, a square hut with canvas walls and a bamboo mat roof. I just finished watching this spectacular video while sitting in my succah, outside. Wow!! Such amazing scenery with the changes of weather and colors and views and everything. Maybe, next year, I should plan a trip with you and build my succah north of the Arctic Circle! 😊 Enjoy your trip. Thanks, always, for sharing these videos with us.

Kind of surprised that there wasn't more coverage of the Revel group at the individual stops and at the campgrounds, to me the adventure would be the people just as much as the drive and scenery (I'm a Revel owner). Certainly an epic journey non matter how you film it though! As I watch this I think of my Mercedes breaking down or giving me problems in the middle of no where, but at least you'd have a lot of support and knowledge to help from that group! Thanks for sharing!

    • @WingsandWheelsAlaska
      @WingsandWheelsAlaska  2 ปีที่แล้ว

Traveling in groups is a hard thing on TH-cam and although some want to be on film others don’t want every aspect of what we are doing to be filmed and we respect that. We use what people agree for us to use.

Excellent choice of quotes to begin your adventure in this episode! I’ve read “The Call of the Wild” several times through as my travels around the Sun continue to increase in number, the words mean more every time my eyes gaze upon them. I’m curious about what they mean to you at this point in your lives?
I loved the opening montage of clips and shots. The one of Cynthia standing on that rock and the Fireweed Jelly shot were certainly keepers. Given your limited storage in the van, I doubt you do any sort of photo albums or scrapbooking, but those are two that would be included in them if you did, I’m certain of it.
The slide being used on the guitar in this instrumental speaks to what you’re doing on so many levels. Not only was it invented in the deep south where the Blues was stepping beyond the confines of “traditional music” and into the realms left unexplored by unconventional artists, but it was breaking up the chords and the “neatness” of the fretted strings to find themselves in unexplored territory and venturing off into the sonic unknown. Sound familiar with you two? Somewhere just out of sight, Kushtaka is smiling at you.
It’s cool that they’d take the time to mark the last tree in the boreal forest on the road. I’ve hiked in and out of tree lines and never thought much about it until you showed me this footage. That’s really quite something when you really think about it. Thank you for including a shot of the sign, which I paused and read (of course), and I knew the trees were really old due to their short growing season. Just to think of a small tree being from the 1700s blows my mind. It’s awesome.
I’m writing this as I see it, not after the fact, and it seems to me that if it’s 38 degrees at 2300’ it’ll be white when you push upward of 4000’. That could get interesting. It’s also a fitting place to gaze through the dreamcatcher and hope that anything negative fails to make it through to you as you’re making your way up that slippery road. The May 2019 footage of that pass was utterly stunning. “Oh shit!” Is certainly a fitting exclamation upon seeing such epic views! It’s great that you took the time to go through your footage to find this clip to share with us. Having lived in cloud-shrouded mountains, I know what it’s like to point at the base of a mountain and say, “There’s Mt. Rainier. The largest land-mass mountain in North America” (you folks have the tallest).
The second Jim said, “There’s a bear up there on our left” I spotted it. I may have to wear glasses to read these days, but long-range vision is still crisp. Interesting song to be added when you’re driving higher up as it’s snowing. It’s a song about two people being stronger as a couple, being able to rise high above any adversity. You two certainly fit the bill when it comes to that.
Camping next to running water is sure to make Ember happy, and the sound of the churning water will lull you to sleep. It’s safe to say that it’s therapy for everyone involved. The moving water just has that effect on people. The intentional kicking and splashing of the water as you walked through the stream speaks to your whimsical nature and desire to disturb the already disturbed. Somewhere, there’s a red button just dying to be pushed as you laugh with gnashed teeth. We all have that inside us. For some, it’s significantly more pronounced, while in others it may occasionally manifest by kicking the water as you pass through a stream.

The benefit of going up just one more hill to see what’s there is the complimentary “gravity assist” descent. Sure, it takes a bit to get up there, but the way back down is made rather easy. As a kid, I’d have just laid down and rolled down the hill. Kids don’t care about things like cold or being wet. Your comment, “It kinda feels like we shouldn’t be here actually. We don’t belong” is one of those hardwired herd-mentality things we humans have stuck in our brains. Luckily, for us and those who follow after us, we have people who can push through that feeling and venture forth into the vast unknowns. Just think how the people felt making that road from nothing. Imagine what they were thinking. “So where are we going?”, “That way.”, “Are we there yet?”, “No Timmy, we’re not even remotely close to ‘there’ yet.”
Here’s a question for you. Do you think the fire ring that was provided at the campground was actually a piece of the pipeline that they cut off to use for the fire ring? Makes me wonder. It’s the first thing I thought of when I saw it.
That second Sun is called a “Sun Dog” and is always at a 90-degree angle from the Sun. I’ve seen three of those simultaneously at Minot. One to either side of the Sun and one directly above. They were all joined by a white halo. It was one of the coolest things I’d seen other than the light pillars. People who have never lived in the extreme cold will never understand them.
The montage including the drone footage at midnight as the Sun still shone down upon you, was a magnificent one. You’re truly blessed to get to be in such amazing surroundings, and I love the Timelapses! Great video you two!

Good morning Brian. I think we have both become drawn to nature more and more. I wouldn't say we have become anti social as we have continued on these adventures but we do find the seclusion and peacefulness of our travels to be calming. It gives us the opportunity to enjoy what is important, us and the dogs. Every time we are in town for an extended period of time we can literally feel our anxiety grow and then we get the urge to escape back to the wild. I think we just find much more joy in being disconnected now and the less stuff we take with us the better it feels. I don't know if that even makes sense or not :)
We do pick certain photos that we have printed and hang up in the family home. We are on our fourth hard drive of photos and video footage. Becomes more and more difficult to go back and pull that old footage! That opening montage we were trying to give a feel of waking up, blinking of the eyes.
We thought of you with that sign and knew you would enjoy reading it. The actual last tree was destroyed by people... why would anyone cut down a tree for no purpose at all than just to vandalize the forest. We were so happy to see the bear was actually visible in the footage when we started editing it. Many times we don't know if things will show up or not.
We asked that same question about the fire ring. I bet it was part of the pipeline scraps. Sun dogs are fairly common up here as you would imagine. That one really did not look like the normal ones but may have been just because of the clouds. We are glad you enjoyed the video! Have a wonderful week!

I have been watching your videos for quite a while now,and enjoying them so much .. and I sometimes ask myself the question of " how can they live this life for so long ? " on a material level .. It may not be a public topic, but I am aware of the costs involved, your vehicle being the main one, and the equipments, fuel, and generally everything one needs to live ..I understand your have affiliations, you also give lessons on line, but how can you make ends meet ? It may be a sensible or personal subject, I know, but I am just curious and I sometimes wonder if I would be able, materially and financially, to live " off the grid" for several years, and have the means to provide for such a way of life..to sum it up : roughly, globally, can you "make it" financially , without having too many restrictions or difficulties ? Pardon me if my questioning is too personal and I would perfectly understand if you don't wish to speak about that here..

Hi Jacques. These are great questions. We are both paid very well for what we do. We both teach remotely for a college and Jim trains very special dogs. For us, we are preparing to retire but will probably continue teaching remotely when we make that final decision. is it doable financially, well that depends on your budget and sticking to that budget. We are not ready just yet to let go of our main income streams while we pay for the van but we are close. We could feasibly do it now but we are building up a good savings first so when we want to ship the van overseas we can.
