    Brian, thank you so much for pointing out the differences between the older GS model and the new GS model. I stopped by to different dealerships looking at the bikes and neither one could tell me what the actual differences were other than color scheme.

    As far as the bouncing headlight it’s just two screws you can tighten and it stops bouncing. After tightening it hasn’t bounced to me again

    I agree. Some ‘issues’ are worth living with. I’ve got a 2013 R1200Gs and the ‘hopping’ clutch on that only presents itself when I do a technical ride. And by that time I usually take a rest in any case. Removing the ABS button seems like a huge oversight, as does the traction control. But still a very nice option for commuting if you never take a pillion.

    Brian, thank you for the thoughtful, insightful review. Your honest assessment speaks to a growing group of Adv riders. These aren’t beginniners, but those who wish to extend their time in the sport.
    At 72 I’ve ridden everything from CT 90’s to GoldWings, and adventure riding is where my interest lies now. I purchased a new G 310 GS in 2017, and while it’s in no way perfect I’m confident it will make it possible for me enjoy the ride for years to come.
    Thanks again!

    I love my 2019 G310GS. I wouldn't trade it for any other bike because it's ideal for how I ride - back roads, gravel roads and dirt roads, and almost no highway riding. I bought it for solo ultralight ADV motorcycle camping.
    The slipper clutch and ride by wire throttle are nice additions I'd like to have, but I wouldn't trade my ABS button for them as BMW forced us to do. The flickering headlight was a quick and easy fix by replacing the halogen bulb with an LED bulb and replacing the three rubber mounts with stainless fender washers. I also upgraded to LED turn signals at the same time, which was also cheap and easy.
    BMW nailed the aesthetics. Many people have told me it's a gorgeous bike, including my 90 year old mom, and I'd agree.
    The only disappointment for me was the 2.9 gallon (11 litre) fuel tank. It should have twice the fuel capacity.
    I installed Koso Apollo heated grips and they look like factory heated grips. They work great. This is the first bike I've had with heated grips and I'll never go without heated grips again. I also added an aluminum skid plate, USB charging ports, GPS tracker hidden in the beak, an SAE port for a battery maintainer and 12VDC power port when the bike is off, a windshield, larger pegs, enlarged kickstand foot, etc. I still need to add engine crash bars, hand guards, two channel digital video recorder with rear view display for better situational awareness, tall Seat Concepts seat and LED auxiliary lights.

      Looks like you went all out. Just keep in mind: I have just had my bike in for its annual service and my aluminium bashplate is to heavy for the mounting rubbers. Mine have already torn off.

    • @UltralightMotorcycleCamping
      @UltralightMotorcycleCamping 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@BrianCheyne - I've had my G310GS for almost three years, with the aluminum bash plate the entire time, and have had no trouble. I remove it once a year when I change the oil and filter. One possible problem if riding hard - it's possible for a chunk of gravel of the wrong size to become trapped between the bash plate and oil filter and the vibration will wear a hole in the filter.

    But my bike never stalled when riding at low speeds. And my test ride with the 2020 model was much better than before, when I tested it in 2018 and yes, stalled several times and had a very soft front suspension . So I absolutely agree with you. I wish BMW offered a G310GS Adventure version with a 5 gallon fuel tank, tubeless spoke wheels, an aluminum bash plate, engine protection bars, and fully adjustable suspension front and rear. Those upgrades would cost BMW less than US$400 and I'd pay US$2000 more for that bike. Old guys are going with smaller bikes to keep riding, and tend to have more discretionary income. BMW should offer a G310GS Adventure.

      Thank you for the comment DR200 Gold. There was an incident with one of BMW's demo units where a lady tackled a very technical section on one of our local passes. On the way down, she was a little to hot into one corner and the bike did not want to stop. She and the bike ended up in a ditch. But as I said in the video, this is not an Enduro bike and you should ride it accordingly.

    • @Liberty4Ever
      @Liberty4Ever 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wondered if maybe BMW tweaked the ABS so it doesn't roll as much in off road situations, so eliminating the ABS switch wouldn't be so hazardous for steep off road descents, but I want to be able to disengage the ABS for off road riding and wouldn't give up the ABS button to get a slipper clutch and ride by wire throttle. I'm sick of government regulators forcing ABS on us because it makes bikes safer ON ROAD for low to medium experience riders, while completely ignoring the hazard the ABS causes for off road riding. They have highway safety statistics and don't care about off road crashes. I want ABS on road and will pay extra for it, but I want to be able to turn it off when riding down steep dirt roads or trails. It's bad enough when regulators force manufacturers to re-engage ABS every time the bike stalls when riding off road, but not allowing ABS to be disabled at all is dangerous and stupid on an ADV or dual sport bike.

Would you recommend this bike to tour South Africa, Botswana and Zambia for someone coming from the states? I am an avid longtime rider who loves to tour. I currently own a urban gs 1200 (was torn between the 1200 and the 310 when trying to balance ride and places I wanted to see) and an airhead r100cs. I tour with soft bags and try not to ride at night. Would love to hear your views on touring and how you do it. What you do to have a successful and safe ride throughout South Africa.

    • @BrianCheyne
      @BrianCheyne  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can only talk about touring South Africa. There are so many beautiful places to visit, and most of them are accessible on reasonable roads. All I can say is to take your time. Travel slow and with purpose. No game parks allow motorcycles, so if you want to visit places like Kruger Park, you will have to get an alternative mode of transport. Our country really offers everything from mountains to beaches to desert. Talk to the locals, they will be far more knowledgeable than Google will ever be. Botswana also has some beautiful places, but you have to be weary about sand. You can get to most places on tar roads, but you can get yourself into serious trouble there if you are not used to riding in sand. The 310 is also not exactly ideal for sand riding. Personally, rather visit Namibia than Zambia. :)

If you are looking at replacing your BMW G 310 then it will have to be for something with slightly bigger capacity. The electronic throttle makes the bike feel more responsive and the LED indicators make it a safer bike as you are seen better especially at roundabouts
    I looked at many bikes prior to upgrading including the KTM390, Tiger 660 Sport and CB500X, but for me the 310GS is the most comfortable, agile and fun bike of the lot. As for the light - it’s not even worth mentioning. Many users never ride in the dark. The shaking problem can be easily solved by just adding rubber adsorbers around but even when it isn’t shaking - the light is still far below any standards and has to be replaced with an aftermarket solution.

The clutch and throttle on the new one is night and day difference -- you really have to TRY to stall the newer models. Such a fun bike. Nice review and comparison, your points are very accurate.

    I like quite a bit about what you have to say but you don't mention the years of the bikes that you are comparing nearly enough. Especially right from the start you need to say that you are comparing a specific year, make,and model to whatever year make and model you are comparing it to. You seem to be assuming that people who are watching have watched you before or already know some of the specifics of the bikes that you are comparing. I kept waiting for you to reiterate what two bikes you were comparing and then I waited some more. I know that you know what you are talking about now if you can just brush up on the details that are so important I might just subscribe.

      Thank you for your feedback. There have just been two iterations of the G 310 GS. The launch model ( 2016-2020) and this updated version (2021-present). I was assuming that the riders of the first iteration might be considering the updated version, so those were the people I was targeting.

    • @richardwestmoreland4796

      @@BrianCheyne I could tell that you were targeting riders that are more familiar with the two iterations that are available and riders that are more experienced than myself in general. I'm a newbie to motorcycles and not just to these two different versions of BMW's G 310 GS consequently so it is sometimes a bit of a tough go for me when a writer assumes a lot of things about motorcycles. I find myself having to read a comment several times when a writer has assumed anything. I could tell that you know much more about motorcycles than I probably ever will but I enjoyed the content of your piece and just thought that if you could make it a bit easier for newbies like me to understand it I might as well make a recommendation to you. Thanks for taking the time to explain your side of things.
