    The ESP/ASP basically buffers the music from the CD, saves some seconds of music ahead so if bumped, it doesnt skip. Depending on the CD player, it'll buffer 10-30 seconds of music. For those CD players with 30 seconds of buffer, they tend to stop the CD to save on power making them last a little longer.

      Yep. I was going to say the same thing. If those rubber mounts were responsible for anti shock you wouldn't need a button to enable it. To be honest I don't know why the button was there agreat. Why not just enable it all the time by default? Does it really consume much power?

    I love watching these little fixing videos! I'm into portable cassette players myself and your videos are great for tutorials and troubleshooting, even if you don't think they're anything special. I watch some of your console videos too and I love them, but I'm really into the ones where you fix music players and stuff! I also have the iFixit screwdriver kit you often use, I bought it a few years back to open and fix my Wii U Pro controller!

    That ASP is just buffering the audio data into a small cache memory that’s enough to store 10 seconds worth as it says. Loads of portable CD players ended up using something similar.
    Ah someone beat me to it, that’s a really cool design though for a portable CD player.

    a good video. I like to see old tech, simple fixes to get working. I was at the charity shop. Looking for something that in the words of that crazy Aussie bloke. Dont turn it on, tear it apart. I got a personal cd player, and a speaker dock, thing. Both boxed. £2 each. Nothing fancy. So if they dont work, and I cant fix them, no great loss. tried the 2 things. full working order. I was upset as I dont get to play with my screwdrivers. I took the cd player on a bus trip to the next town. the batteries it come with, seemingly original ones, lasted all the trip.

    ASP does nothing more than just buffering the track (by reading it at a bit faster speed than strictly required for playback) so when an skips occurs (because of the lens losing track) it only affects the data being added at the end of buffer instead of what you're currently playing from the beginning.
    Simple stuff to do on digital, very difficult on analog.

    The "anti-shock protection" cashes some seconds of the CD, so when a shock occurs, the player continue playing from cash memory while quickly re-positioning the laser. Simple, but effective, I think it's kinda unnecessary to be able to switch it off.

    Pretty good job. I just fixed up a Realistic CD-3200 CD player from 1988 with mountains of alkaline cakes in the battery compartment and old 80s foam everywhere. Aside from this, I also just cleaned up a Sony Discman D-131 that needed an entire new laser mech assembly as the old laser died. If you ever need to replace the laser mech in one of these things... Do your research on fine tuning and calibration beforehand, as it will always need doing. It's a dark art.
    I'd love to see you try and fix an older portable CD player from the 80s. Toshiba made a couple, but the real fun is the small time companies you don't see that often. There's a Citizen CBM-777 in the states right now that's all white with red and blue buttons... And it's listed as non-working. I'd recommend you that as a challenge... But do remember that it's probably center negative for the DC jack out the back.

  • @AsamiImako
    @AsamiImako 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Anti-skip works by buffering the next several seconds of the currently playing track (shown with that little display you noted), so that when you're moving around it's simply playing the track from memory. If you continually shake the player for example (not recommended, obviously) you will see the little buffer display slowly empty because it will run out of preloaded track. Later models like Sony's CD Walkman with G-Shock Protection had a really robust version of this, I don't think I've ever managed to get one of those to skip.

    I have long been a fan of the Alba brand (the British Alba which this CD player is) as being of Scottish and Irish descent Alba is the old name for Scotland. I also love the watch brand which was always aimed at the younger of mind by Seiko which is why Alba's tend to be a bit more funky than the bog standard Seiko, kinda like Pulsar which was always a brand aimed at the American market. You should look up the Alba AKA subbrand... like the Seiko Wired or the Pulsar Spoon just super sexeh funky looking watches ftw :)

  • @stefanegger

    ASP has a small memory buffer to store the music in it. If the player skips, it will read it again and because of the buffer, you wont notice it (at least not for some time - you see on the top it says "10 second ASP"). To turn it off makes not so much sense in a portable unit, but ofc. directly reading from CD is better than compress and store it and have a small delay in it because of the memory buffer.

I don’t know why I felt like saying that, but anyway I remember my sister said she put a CD in a time capsule thing once(it was a school project) and everyone was like, “haha like CD’s will ever die” and then less then a year later MP3 players became popular.

  • @t0nito
    @t0nito 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have a different model but all the electronics are the same, the ASP is a buffer, when activated you'll see the disc rev up, it fills the memory with some seconds of audio what you are listening to is not the direct output of the disc but the integrated digital buffer, if the disc skips you keep listening the audio normally and the disc revs up again to compensate.
    Imagine a water resevoir, you have an input and an output, when you open the water it starts flowing from the output of the resevoir at a steady rate, the water resevoir fills up at a faster rate quickly to keep up with the demand, when full the water enters the resevoir at the same rate it is being emptied, if the water supply fails the resevoir will keep emptying at a steady rate, when the water supply comes back but it will have to fill up faster than it's emptying to fill up again. That's how this works. If the water supply doesn't fill up in time the tank will deplete, same with this, if the disc keeps skipping or is dirty the buffer will empty out and lose audio.

    It seems a bit bulky for a personal CD player from the early 2000s but I suppose it's an off-brand player so it's probably trailing edge compared to the CD Walkmans... Walkmen? that Sony was putting out at the time. I have a CD Walkman that's also a radio from 2004 (Sony CD Walkman D-NF430) and it's one of those circle-shaped CD Walkmen with a diameter barely bigger than the CD itself and which is only around 3cm thick.
    The transparent CD lid is cool, I'll give ALBA a point for presentation.

    Nice fix/restore video for new diyers
    For sound and build quality, I would stick with Sony, philips, Panasonic branded players.
    I have been collecting them for years now, maybe have 30-40 models made from 1987-2010 or so.
    Fun for nostalgia, but still a functional, serious piece of music gear, as CDs 💿 are still considered an audiophile format.
    Also many players have am fm and weather band radios, all still functioning in North America.
    By 2001 or so, anti skip buffers got to 45 sec or more. Many players could play mp3 on data cds by then
    Nice to have these as vehicles do not have CD player options as of ~2018 and later model years in North America
    The model in this vid appears to be a uk model, no name brand like gpx or similar in North America
    Fine for tinkering and gaining experience, but the name brands listed are my go to models for quality
    Yes, we all know you can rip a cd to flac. wav or mp3, or listen to streams from your phone over bt, but some of us just want to grab an album on cd and pop in a player and play immediately, full lossless sound, no compression, no pulling out your laptop and firing up ripping apps and waiting, assuming your notebook even has an optical drive anymore...etc

It had that same switch on it where if you plugged in a power supply and switched it to 'Charge' the CD player would play music while charging the rechargeable AA batteries I put in it. Unfortunately CRAIG electronics are absolute garbage and when I did that it never worked off of batteries again.

    People who say you should use vinegar to clean corrosion are usually missing a step, there. Yes, your entry level chemistry tells you that using an acid to neutralise a base is a good idea, but unless you’ve used precisely the right amount, at the right concentration, and no more, you’re just going to swap your alkaline environment for an acidic one. If you use vinegar, ethanoic acid, to clean up battery corrosion, you must practically flood it with alcohol, next, to make sure you aren’t leaving acid behind.
