The only memory i had when i ground out the rank 1 Japanese tanks with the Chi-Ha is _abysmal_ .
The HEAT shell could do damage, if it could pen at all. Thankfully, in the Japanese tree there is a Chi-Ha Kai with an actual gun.
However, i sometime imagine the poor Japanese tankers who have to face M4 Shermans with this thing (or worse, a dinky Ha-Go) in late 1944 lmao.

I actually like this tank for 1.3. I wouldn't pick it as a really good tank at 1.3 but I would definetly pick it first spawn. And Chi Ha translates to "Medium Tank Third" or "Medium Tank Three"

Type 97 Chi-Ha is the designation of the tank because 97 is that imperial year. Chi is for medium tank and Ha I need to do further research on

This is a good little tank, emphasise on ‘little’ which is important in WT. Often overlooked is the stabiliser that low tier Japanese tanks have That’s why you came out in top against that BT on Cargo Port. I guarantee you his gun was whipping up and down.
You later say you were lucky to pull the trigger first. No, that was the stabiliser.
It also has a decent turret traverse unlike the Panzer IIIs and of course fantastic gun depression. The 57mm heat will one-shot a lot of vehicles at this BR as you found with those Italians and will out-reload most other opponents.
Sadly the Kai version now faces 105 Sherman’s, T34s and Panzer IVGs because Gaijin uses bullshit player statistics to ‘balance’ their vehicles.

The machine gun on the cupula is an anti-air machinegun. In fact, you can tell it even has a telescopic sight on it for anti-air use. It's meant to be manned by the commander, who would stand backwards in his cupola (so, facing away from the front of the tank and towards the engine) and fire the gun at incoming planes. It was not meant to fire at infantry or other vehicles, hence why it's in an awkward position to be manned aiming towards the front. Several variants of the Sherman, all variants of the Stuart and even later designs like the M24 Chaffee and M41 Walker Buldog also incorporated similarly mounted machine guns for anti-air defense, with the added benefit that they were easier to use aimed towards the front of the vehicle thanks to the symmetrical design of US tank turrets. It was still not all that effective. The machine guns had a bad firing angle and no depression which meant theycould only engage targets directly in front of the tank, they were dependent on the turret not traversing too far, and they left the gunner manning the machinegun very exposed to incoming fire. In an anti-infantry role, they were outclassed by the tank's coaxial and hull machineguns, although often tankers would offer soldiers a ride on the tank in exchange for manning that turret machinegun. And the halo is just an antenna, they did away with it after a while and used regular antennas, but it was a somewhat popular design for interwar and early war tanks. The Lago I and the T-28 also have one, for example.

@@ThunderWithMuffin No?? Chi actually comes from "chu-sensha" (medium tank) and "ha" stands for 3. Therefore, the name "Type 97 Chi-Ha" could be translated as "1937's medium tank model 3."
