  • In this long form video I demonstrate all the steps involved in building a fitted box for storing art brushes. It's made from 1/2" Appleply plywood, 1/8" tempered hardboard, and 1" foam.

    I like what you did there, when cutting the box in half. Putting scrap of wood. This will help me in the future.

    I've learned a few nice techniques by watching your videos. Hope to apply them to my own projects. You certainly pay close attention to fine detail.

    My Persian cat put her chin on the edge of my laptop, watched everything you did with me. Artist's approved, the highest TH-cam Award as far as I'm concerned!

      That was funny. I wish I could get any of our cats to watch me work :-) Thanks for the comment.

    Planing plywood...now that takes guts and skill!

    • @MartyBacke
      @MartyBacke  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +F1DesignUS Planing plywood edges is easy, just be sure that your plane iron is very sharp and setup for end grain.

    • @MartyBacke
      @MartyBacke  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Allan Nielsen Thanks Allan. Any plane can cut end grain (and therefore plywood) reasonably well. The blade just has to be very sharp. A low angle plane can be a little more forgiving in use when planing end grain.

    Nice project Marty. I love the precision that you have when making your boxes. And it's nice to see a rare use of a birdcage awl in a video.

      +GuysWoodshop Thanks Guy. The birdcage awl really is a nice tool for creating screw starter holes.

    Beautiful work.
    I only just found your Channel. I have always orientated hinges in the opposite direction so that the spine was on the outside of the hinge. I noticed that you and Christopher Schwarz both put your hinges in the same way. In my experience this causes a gap and I'm wondering why you do this orientation.
    In Popular Woodworking build a chest with Christopher Schwarz part 9 even acknowledges the Gap in his chest lid is caused by the orientation of the hinge but he doesn't change it. I would really like to understand your thinking. Thank you for the wonderful content.

      In this particular case I just wanted to minimize the amount of the hinge that would show when the box was closed. I mostly don't do this.

    I enjoy watching your build videos Marty. This box is really nice. What finish did you use on it in the end? Looked like a water base finish and the sheen is very nice.

      +Sean from SimpleCove Thank you. For this box I used some Deft Satin Acrylic finish.

    Out of curiosity, what's the name of the pyramid-shaped tool that you used to make the holes for the hinge screws? I've seen something similar used before for Japanese pin joinery, but have never been able to figure out what it's called!

      +Max Makes It's called a Birdcage Awl. There are a few modern makers of this tool. The one shown in the video is made by Narex, for about $10.

      I bought those from Amazon: a.co/hJpCuCJ Unfortunately they don't seem to be available. But search EBay because I've seen them there too.

    Have you ever tried Kaizen Foam? It would have been perfect for that application. Nice work.

      +John Conklin Thanks John. Yes, I have Kaizen foam, but for this box I needed a particular thickness and I wanted a softer foam.

    Nice build and video! How did you make the stencils?

    • @MartyBacke
      @MartyBacke  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Robert Kramek Thanks. I used online.rapidresizer.com/stencil to create the text which I then printed on some heavy paper. With an Exacto knife, magnifiers, and patience, I cut out all the lettering.
