- In light of the recent controversy surrounding Adobe's terms and conditions, I decided to dive into why I prefer one-time license or free software for my creative projects. In this video, I'll discuss my favorite alternatives to Adobe's subscription model, including:
iMovie
Canon Digital Professional 4
Darktable
Apple Aperture
Luminar Ai
Try these:
Luminar Neo
Audacity
Davinci Resolve

When/if Affinity gets bigger, I hope they don't get injected with Adobe DNA and become the thing they oppose
You get what you pay for. Photoshop does more than any free or one time fee software out there. Simple.
And you are PAYING Adobe to use your work for their own purposes instead the other way around.
@@lubossoltes321 If that's in the terms then so be it. It's what I signed up for. Would be pretty hypocritical of me to want to use generative AI and image generators then turn around and say "but don't use mine" now wouldn't it.
Darktable is gruesome, that only a complete masochist would use (no way to get a predicatble result, except if you use the depreacted display centric workflow). Luminar is a complete ripoff (Luminar AI already is on it's last leg and will not run very much longer, the next operating system update can end this abruptly with no recourse (and the successor now is basically subscription only).
Darktable is value for money = free. Luminar works well if you don't go to far or you want to go extreme. I don't care about constantly upgrading my OS especially Apple. I would always be one OS system behind. It's less hassle that way. I'll probably have to upgrade someday when my computer gives out, but I'll keep my cash until then. I'm still running a G4 Mac for some applications. So who knows!
@@andrewfindlayphoto Luminar is the worst when it comes to keeping up with Apple MacOS. You will probably lose Luminar AI with the next OS update, no matter what. They never cared to keep up even when the product was current, and Luminar AI is discontinued. And while you still can purchase Luminar Neo outright they already limited it's lifetime to 2 bug updates - but AFAIK only if those updates don't contain new features (and that means probably 0 bug fixes for those that didn't go the subscription route - which happens to be more expensive than the LR+PS if you look for a good deal which are available multiple times a year)...
And Darktable is free but very costly in learning curve and with that scene referenced workflow they so tout is only suitable to horrendous HDR images.
The moment they went full on subscription instead of one time price I just cracked the F outta it. works like a charm since.
That still makes them happy in the end since the notion of cracking Adobe software gives them a larger monopoly even if people don't pay the subscription.
What about Affinity photo, as a Photoshop replacement..
I use it , I found it to be faster and better than Adobe.
@@lightrecon6354 Really, eh? I'm tired of Adobe products (I'm still using LR/PS). I tried a free trial of Acrobat and it took me close to 3 hours with their tech support to get my money after they wouldn't let me cancel my free trial before my period was up, and they billed me. The buggers. I need to replace LR and PS.
Time to say goodbye to Adobe. There are alternatives.
The free version of Davinci Resolve is amazing.
Affinity Rules !
Go Affinity ! 🤣
@@andrewfindlayphoto Until the new owners Canva, decide to take Affinity Photo, Designer, Publisher down the SASS route a la Adobe/Autodesk. Then what?
So do whatever you want. Nobody cares. I guess you will also work for no salary because someone is doing your job for free.
What a lovely british landscape, every corner worth a photo
@@Happy_Doom I'm so lucky to live here. 😁
Adopey
Bring back Perpetual licenses.
like your thumbnail nice 👍
@@ScotSpirit Thanks 😁
DXO photolab has a perpetual licence, and is very good
I tried Darktable and I agree, definitely clunky! Another free option is Rawtherapee which works well, the biggest limitation I find there is the lack of masking. That's what then lead me to ART (which is a Rawtherapee fork), it has more masking capabilities although in comparison to what I've seen of Lightroom on youtube it is a little lacking still. But it does the job and is relatively intuitive and is free!
Thanks for the info I'll have a look at Rawtherapee and Art 👍😁
One problem with the CC TOS involves uploading licensed images from third parties. When I license, say, one of your photos to put in a leaflet, I don't own it. Adobe does not differentiate between what's mine and what I licensed. Their "license of your content" clause in the TOS is much more problematic then first meets the eye: I cannot license the third party content to Adobe for whatever purpose, as I'm not a licensor but a licensee myself.
Your right. It gets us all into a tangled legal mess over exclusively, licensing and copyright. 😵💫
Free software is always the best software.
Wow good old Aperture sad that Apple left it to sail away
nice info do
The should have incorporated Aperture into. Apple Photos 😭
Well done Andrew. Why pay for something when you can get it for free. Power to your elbow !
Affinity Rules !
So, you're working for nuts? Some people are really funny. Not.
Canva have half decent AI, so expect they will add generative fill (and a subscription plan) to Affinity real soon.
wat are your system specs??
2012 mac mini dual core with 16Mb of RAM. Away from the computer at the moment. So no precise specs. But it still works well enough 😁
@@andrewfindlayphoto i think its realy time for an upgrade :D
Feel the same way. Affinity photo is a great alternative to photoshop, it doesn't have the ai tools at the moment
It'll go subscription soon enough now that Canva own it, so don't get too excited.
