Ah, another case of Geoff giggles!! He works on lowering and raising his voice. He could easily hit G1 in chest, recently lowered to F1, everything below that is subharmonic. If you check the notes it says Arranged, produced, filmed, performed, and edited by Geoff Castellucci. Final mix is done by Ed Boyer who does the same thing for Voiceplay as well as Home Free and maybe Pentatonix. Those three lowest notes were actually the same note, just done in different styles. One reactor played that last note 10 time before he could get a word out. His second Hobbit number, I See Fire is wonderful. I also always recommend his version of Shenandoah.

The very first note you heard, sung by the Geoff on the very left, was a subharmonic note. And so was the first super deep drop he did. Everything else was sung in pure chest voice. Even that very last note was a chest note, he just pushed a lot of air out through it. Geoff has been working on his voice for 25+ years, and his subharmonics for about 7-8 years now. But he's a low bass, and can do F1's in pure chest on a good day. That's not really something you can just learn to do if you're not born with the anatomy of a low bass. Most basses stay in the second octave and up.
He can do low notes on all vowel sounds, even an E. He did a low E sound in House Of The Rising Sun for instance. He has said that E's are difficult though, but he can do them.

The ONLY video of his where he sings with other singers is a Christmas song called "Mele Kalikimaka", which features the American Sirens 🙂. Don't worry though, you're not the first reactor who didn't spot them being all Geoff 😅. On his channel he has a few videos where he teaches "how to sing REALLY LOW", they're incredibly interesting and give the watcher the measure of his dedication. He still studies and practices a lot, and keeps pushing his limits beyond what they are on both sides of his range... Which, BTW, if I remember correctly spans from a B0 to an A#5 😁. Now that you watched this one, the natural follow up is the OTHER song from the Hobbit saga, "I see fire", where you'll find again the same characters (four of the Dwarves involved in that journey), with same makeups and costumes but on a very different set and in a different situation and mood. The second is chest and the last is a growl technique. His lowest sustained note to date is a B0 subharmonic. All the "male vocalists" in this video are just Geoff in different costumes and make up. The backing vocals are also all Geoff. He records the separate parts then layers them together. He has a couple videos where he demonstrates "How to Sing Low" on his page. Those show us how he does some of this stuff. They'd probably make more sense to you since you teach music, but he's good at dumbing it down for us folks that don't really know much about it. ❤

And that didn't make sense to me, because pitch is still dependent upon a certain wavelength being produced. With future explanations sought, I guess what makes sense to me is that the technique involves engaging his 'false vocal cords', or the tissue that is in front of the vocal cord folds, and the vibration produces the lower note. So, yes, his larynx and vocal cords are in a sense in the position that they would normally be to produce an E2 when the engagement of the false vocal comes into play to 'turn it into' an E1. This, along with this version of "Sixteen Tons" have always been his most-viewed videos, but I have to say this song itself never did much for me, despite it being wonderfully arranged and sung. I MUCH prefer his other 'Hobbit Dwarf' song, 'I See Fire', and I hope you check that one out also. It is much more beautiful and emotional to me, and you really get to hear him stretch into the top of his range as well.
Aha! The Geoff-tones/Geoffettes/Geoff-clones strike again! Take heart, you're not the only reactor who didn't realize everyone you see is Geoff, as well as everyone you hear. That's standard for a Geoff solo video, where he sings all of the harmony parts himself, as well as the lead vocals. And he also creates all of the instrument sounds, usually using plug-ins for his keyboards - he's been playing piano since he was a boy, and several of his videos show him playing. Geoff layering all of the vocal tracks is actually how he arranges songs for VoicePlay - he'll send each performer a track of all of the vocals, with their part highlighted so they can hear it and learn their part. On the really high tenors, he says that he sometimes has to take the track down an octave, but everything else he can just sing in their register.

He's 42-43 now, so it is probably stabilizing, but he's still pushing, still training. He has videos on his channel teaching people how to do it. There are multiple ways to initiate subharmonics. Throat singing, there's using vocal fry, I've also been able to intimate a harsher sounding sub by focusing sound through the sinus cavity in the throat. Geoff has a couple of videos on his channel on how he sings low. Great resource for it actually. Obviously, it helps to have that innate depth to begin with. For example, I can sing down to b1 in chest most days, might hit a G1 first thing in the morning on a good day, but I'd definitely say b1 is normally bottom of the barrel for me in chest voice as far as a reproducible daily tone, but it's in that soft tambor that doesn't have a resonate umph to it. But as far as a comfortable low note, D#2 is my normal "don't have to warm up, it sounds resonate" low note. And from that note I can usually pop a subharmonic to drop a full octave. So from there, depending on how I attack it, I can hit everything from a D#1 through probably an E2 in subharmonics, though obviously after that normal D2 it'd be best likely to sing in normal intonation. Subharmonics are fun and when practiced, an interesting way to extend your lower end. It takes a lot of practice to really make it blend with normal notes, and a very intrinsic knowledge on where your own voice settles. And obviously tons of practice.

This video in particular fools people, because the makeup work and video editing is good enough that if you don't look closely you may not realize it's all Geoff in various degrees of hairiness. Geoff has a number of videos on his channel where he discusses his vocal techniques. The first shockingly deep note is a subharmonic (and that's a technique Geoff does talk about quite a bit in those tutorial videos), but the other two if I recall correctly are chest notes. Geoff claims to be a natural baritone 'with some bass notes' (*cue massive eyeroll*, lol), but he has definitely worked hard to develop his lower register. We've heard lots of different vowels at those depths; he has remarkable diction for someone singing as low as he does. He's also one of the most agile singers I've ever heard, being able to bounce all around his range with no obvious effort. Other than what Geoff himself has said in his videos, I just assume it's magic because it's easier to understand; I've never heard another voice like his. Other than that, some of what we hear does come down to compression and getting right up on his microphone during recordings, but that hardly takes away from how impressive it all is. And oddly enough, as impressive as this song is with its very, very bass-y notes, it's one of Geoff's least dynamic arrangements. If your think the Pentatonix's Kiss From A Rose was good then you should listen to their o Holy Night. I can't choose between the 2 which is the best!
