Times have certainly changed. I can't imagine HMQ getting a reception like that now.

Well back then a royal visit was a rather rare event. This one was the first ever visit by a reigning monarch to Canada and the whole trip took eight weeks. So it was understandable that very special welcome. Today, with planes and all, international trips are way more common and much shorter in time. And since they are more frequent, farewells and welcomes tend to be rather uneventful.

But over a million people turned out on the banks of the Thames to celebrate Her Majesty's Diamond Jubilee, despite the fact that it "rained on her parade" most of the day, and people would have been much more comfortable watching it on TV.
But the Queen and the Duke were there for the whole four hours, and so were the young people of the Royal School of Music, singing "Land of Hope and Glory" with the rain running down their faces.

@@Hsdias Find the clip of the Royal Jubilee parade. My family had two little children, so they sought shelter in a hotel, where the little girls stood on a window sill and saw it out the window, while everyone else watched the TV, and sand "Rule Britannia!" every 15 minutes or so.

@@alexandradane3672 That is so very true, Alexandra. Harry's behavior is indeed disgraceful. Long live the Queen!
