The AI voices are absolutely atrocious. I can't believe they even released this - they clearly didn't bother consulting native speakers ... And yes, it seems the AI voices try to match the tone of the speaker - some female voices are deep enough to be voiced by male AI voices. It's absolutely awful. One important thing to note is that this is not a professional translation - your words can be misconstrued.
I believe you could download the annotations alongside with the videos as a separate json files using Google Takeout backup feature. I did this to one of my channels after they've announced removing annotations. Maybe you can do this now as well.
Yeah, what a fkng insult. The original audio language is English AUSTRALIAN!! There are other english speaking countries and those people speak english better than any american.
I'm sure 'Annotations' has always been there, but it now only refers to the logo thing that's in the corner of videos. I always turn it off, because it's ugly. I sincerely hope they don't bring the 'other' annotations back, because people kept abusing them to block the entire screen with crap.
I’m Italian and I always hear your beautiful Aussie accent, but I noticed on other original Italian videos I get the English dubbed version. So I suspect it checks the language of the UI instead of your region.
Hi Dave, as a german if think this is a rather good tool ! I rewatched EEVBLOG #1655 and could follow your explanation (yes, i am biased). The translations are seldomly far of. For example, it translated "multimeter" to "moldy man", "GW" to Giga Watt. Positively, it left "Back-to-Back" as there is no german translation for it.
I absolutely hate the ambient mode. I think it's supposed to make the screen glow in a color derived from the video when not in full screen mode, but all it does is bog down my computers to the point they drop to about 5 frames per second if it's enabled. Why would they implement such a feature that nobody asked for or wants?
I don't have Audio Track on this video to choose from. Viewer from Denmark. Btw: I don't need Dave to talk A.I. danish! I've learned Aussie language by the years!
I thought they re-used the annotations toggle for the end screen popups? In any case, I just checked and that toggle is gone! I also don't see the automatic dub tracks, although you might have turned that off for this video.
Just had a look at your DMM Cap Discharge Video and I saw all those new "features"... I live in (French) Quebec Canada and the Video was still in Original English. My Streaming Service Advertising steams me a mix of French/English Commercials while streaming. It's bloody annoying.
Just rewatched the capacitors video in german. The voice sounds a bit weird and robotic, but the translation was quite accurate. I think it would be a great thing for people who do not speak english. I however prefer to watch the Original. I just wish youtube would have an option where people could set their preferences.
Looks like this is being dribbled out to users selectively. I have the "stable volume" option on your Felsenstein video, but none of the others. That's logged in like I am now. But if I log out and pull up the same video, I see "Stable Volume" and "Annotations". But still no "Ambient Mode" or "Language Track" options. Tried logging out and back in again, and switched from Firefox to Chrome, but still don't see most of the new options. I imagine they'll show up sometime over the next few days?
I've had ambient mode for probably a year already - it's annoying as it uses more cpu (and thus more battery on mobile if you can stand to watch yt on mobile, or runs my cpu fan faster and makes noise) and I keep turning it off, and it turns itself back on again periodically. On this video I have stable volume and ambient mode, but no annotations and no alternate language AI audio
I get what your talking about when you where talking about annotations, basically thats just to toggle video cards, watermarks and end screens not the annotations your talking about, sadly youtube hasen't brought back that yet :(
Google should be more then capable enough to match the voice and tone perfectly. Maybe even matching the mouth movement with AI, that it is completely unnoticeable.
Italian female Dave, that's an interesting start of the day.... The translation sounds like it's made with google translate, it's not good, but if (like my parents) you don't know english is enough to understand. I just hope it does not activate by default, I already cuss at youtube for (badly) translating the titles and descriptions... I'll have to change the location of youtube, even if doing that the Italian videos will be translated to english... They add all this stuff, and never give us the ability to change the defaults...
You should have gotten an email from youtube about this. Only some channels got this function available. I think the youtube AI recognized your original voice as female ;-). YOu should leave this function on but hopefully a default can be set. Sometimes or for some it may be helpful. I like it for example for chinese videos ;-).
Austrian here: I think the German dub is surprisingly accurate. The tone and pacing is awful. It sounds like someone on QVC trying to sell stuff, but the translation is more accurate than I would've thought. It even got the technical terms correct, e.g. it translates "analogue ground" to the electrical term "analoge Masse" instead of the literal translation "analoger Boden" (which would be "analogue floor"). However, weirdly enough, it always uses the formal "Sie" instead of the informal "du" when addressing the viewer. Seems super strange for a TH-cam video. I think the feature may actually be useful as a language learning feature. But in classic TH-cam fashion it needs to be explained better to both creators and viewers. Unlike the subtitles, the dubbing on your video isn't marked as generated anywhere. On many channels that might be fine, but on EEVblog even a small translation error could make a big difference and might even be dangerous to viewers. The dubbing hasn't been enabled by default for me, but I've got both German and English set as languages to my Google account, that might make a difference. However, my TV is set to the default German and on there the title of the video is auto-translated to German. The translation is again surprisingly accurate but not literal (it even added an extra "TIPP:" at the start, but after "EEVblog 1655 - " and kept the all-caps parts). That feature is just annoying and I've found no way to turn it off, without changing the language of my entire TV. I'm also pretty sure (at least some) creators can manually add dubs for other languages, because the German dub for Mark Rober sounds flawless. It sounds basically like he's voicing it himself. No weird formal forms, no weird intonations, essentially perfect. Mark Rober's videos also have dubs in a lot more languages, so I doubt they are generated by TH-cam. I'd say, even if the auto dubbing might be incredibly useful to some users, keep it off for now. Until TH-cam gives multilingual users better controls it is too annoying. And as long as the dubs are not marked as auto-generated and therefore potentially erroneous, it might even be dangerous for some of your content (unless someone manually reviews all dubs before release).
it would be cool that thoy would add weird pronounciations in the voice.. for example.. you want english but with french pronounciation or texan or hindu.. that would be a hilarious feature
I found it easy enough to manually turn on a suitable translation, even if it's subtitles. I prefer to use subtitles for non-English videos, rather than any kind of dubbing. For me, personally, you may as well disable the 'automatically translate' functionality.
I've got the issue the other way around: It always translates the videos of a german youtuber I'm subscribed to away from my native language into english. My OS & Browser is german, and I've set my primary language in my google account to german, and just added english as a secondary language. I really hate all those "features" YT released in recent years.
I hate that feature so far. I am German and follow some German creators. Their videos get translated to englisch AI for no reason sometimes. And I cannot disable this (yet?). Maybe they are rolling out the control switches for this feature step by step. On the other hand I sometimes search for videos regarding a special topic or item which is maybe only in polish or Russian. Therefore I would love to see those translations. Because otherwise I would not understand a word. Luckily Dave’s videos appear standard in the original audio track at least for me which is fine. I speak English and German equally good so I prefer the original audio in those 2 languages.
I'm a native German, and yes, it doesn't sound great and has mistakes. However, for (young) people still learning English, this is a fantastic feature. I would have loved to have had this 10 years ago when I was learning English and Electronics. People can simply watch the videos twice and learn about both.
I disagree, with subtitles in your native language, you learn foreign languages much quicker. In that case you hear the word (incl accent), see the context and see the translated word. That ticks almost all boxes for learning a new language. It's quite obvious that in countries where they don't use dubbing, the standard of English is also much higher. At least from the point of understanding, since people actually hear it more often.
@@p_mouse8676 True, but since the primary focus here is to learn about electronics, that is irrelevant. In the scenario I tried to describe, the alternative is not watching the video with subtitles. People who don't understand enough English yet would just not watch the video at all. Like me 10 years ago. You need to understand most the words to take anything from such a video. Very different than a random Hollywood movie. That means you need to pause and look up words regularly and invest a lot of brain capacity in reading the subtitles. Nobody does that and both isn't necessary if the voice is translated. Given that the translation is of decent quality.
@zahlex i realize that very. Because I have been there and done that 👍🏻😎 My advice is always the same, try to get familiar with it asap. Will only be beneficial.
I'm from the Netherlands and I have an extreme hatred of English being translated or dubbed to Dutch. I switched my language on TH-cam to British English back when they started translating video titles. I wouldn't mind it on other languages. as long it's a feature that is OFF by default.
Jared Owen channel and 3Blue1Brown also have this feature enabled but it recognize the gender correctly and even make the voice very similar to the author voice. It is weird that AI translates your voice into a female. Your voice is kind of high in pitch but not that high. The quality of your channel voice translation is nothing compared to the Jared Owen one.
I'm from Sweden myself but on one video i was going to watch there was no English default it just started playing the video in German after some reloading in got back the English option
Dave has a high pitch male voice. YT: Ah, it is a girl 😂. And the TH-cam App glitched, showed Dave and played the sound from this clip th-cam.com/users/shortstcmzDLv1uO8?si=QmOVsqDZxx0Tfcy_ with a girl talking about kangaroo balls. 😂😂😂😂
kind of sad that's not a link to Bush Barbie, but that was a pretty good clip too. I don't think there will ever be a late night show as good as Craig Ferguson (or old classic Conan) was again
Also, what is this sleep timer. But this one currently has only the single audio track. Stable volume comes if you have a wide dynamic audio range, because for some reason YT thinks all audio needs to be compressed to the limit, like every channel is a hard rock radio channel, and needs to be sitting at 100% modulation all the time, even with silence between paragraphs. Wonder how many translations are available, might try the Dutch one, and see if the AI can translate, though you will find technical speak is very hard, as the terms used change between languages, and you can get the hilarious one like there being no difference between soldering and welding, and other such fails.
Sleep timer is probably just like a TV, and probably more intended for when auto play next video on. I know the Android app has had that for years. Stable volume is handy when someone uploaded say a talk at very low volume, or just getting a normalized level at night. Not many people take care of their audio when uploading....
Stable Volume I had for quite some time now - and it is really good, because you don't get your ears blown away by un-normalized videos. But the AI Voice is so annoying. Didn't had it for this video, but I follow a German channel (I'm German) and it gets auto translated (and auto selected) to English. Why do companies nowadays introduce a feature and only them think about a switch to enable/disable it - from the user side?! Discord is also really bad at this
From Brazil here: It's SO ANOYING! But i know why it's beeing used and why youtube maybe will rollout for everyone: It sounds like NatGeo or Discovery Channel!! From english speaking countries you have the original audio track in theses channels, but we got it with a very strange dubbing that have a signature very similar to the youtube translation. It may bump some views for some people, mainly people who is brain rotting on TV depending on the content, but it is very strange. And the translation is not bad, acctually, i got myselfe some minutes into a dark channel once, but youtube know i watch in english, it shouldn't auto change

I don't want english videos translated to other languages. I want the other way round. Other languages auto translated to english. Im subscribed to a non english electronics channel. The video titles are autotranslated to english but the audio is still in his native language. I don't know what language it is and i can't understand a word he is saying. But im still subscribed anyway because he shows useful circuits with the schematics. I just wish there was an option for English subtitles or dubbed audio.
Wow! All this A.I. stuff is changing everything so quickly. It's almost like we're living in a Golden Era... Almost... I'm sure there will be random accidental swear words in other languages as well as other such hilarious errors. 😂
Those AI voices sound bad, and as they rely on those broken automatically generated closed captions they are often wrong to begin with. I’ve noticed this on several other mostly technical and science channels which makes this that much more awful because those autocaptions are especially bad there. Even more annoying is those pesky auto translated video titles. Which in German most of the time are about 40% longer and then being cut off in the middle because now they are too long for the crappy UI in the TH-cam app.
Audio leveling and ambient lighting aren't new (I've had those for over a year I think). The audio dubbing seems to be new (they were translating video titles only before, (which can't be disabled!)) and it's at least as bad as your experiment from a while back, with the added "bonus" of making you female. I'm starting to wonder if I need a VPN to stop TH-cam from forcing terrible German translations on me...
Evidently it is way too much to expect out of a content creator to target the proper audio levels. It takes bulk corporate AI to fix the issue of audio volume.
I HATE those automatic translations. TH-cam does that also with video names. It is good for those who need it, but automatically change video name or put new voice track? just no, no non nooooo!!! Luckily Finnish is not even experimental in this dubbing thing. TH-cam should let people choose if they want video name translated or video dubbed. Default should be just as video creator did make the video, anything extra or change, default off.
Fuck it. Just because I'm Polish, it doesn't mean I don't understand English well enough and need dubbing. Good thing it's available - but shoving it down anyone's throat? Nah. I don't want it on Netflix and of all things I don't want it on TH-cam. I don't see an option for turning automatic dubbing on or off on my channel though. Maybe it's for monetized channels only - mine is not.
If this was available in my language I would be absolutely livid and stop watching. I'm already trying to fight google automatically translating reddit pages in search results, even though I have manually selected English as my preferred language. It still thinks that "Yeah, you'lre in Sweden so let's AI translate everything to Swedish!". Bullshit and counterproductive.
It keeps switching the CC to spanish and Hindi? And I don't know how to remove Spanish and Hindi from the option in the closed captions... AI Sucks Ballz!!!
I watched the multimeter video in German and found it to be mostly ok. The female voice is annoying but I guess it might be still useful for some people who are not fluent in English. So I would leave it turned on in your videos.
It could be helpful for people who have no idea of the language. I am happy to get auto generated translations of Russian videos because I would otherwise understand nothing. The problem is with YT obviously. It should run your videos in English first and only if people want to change to German should they do it manually and not automatically perhaps?

... And yes, it seems the AI voices try to match the tone of the speaker - some female voices are deep enough to be voiced by male AI voices. It's absolutely awful.
One important thing to note is that this is not a professional translation - your words can be misconstrued.
0:32 Finally someone is talking about YT sh*t feature causing inconvenience to millions. Thanks for addressing this issue Dave.
Who can enable: "Manually review dubs before publishing"
6:50
I think when this rolls out globally there will be add-ons for Firefox and other browsers that will help force the original dub.
I believe you could download the annotations alongside with the videos as a separate json files using Google Takeout backup feature. I did this to one of my channels after they've announced removing annotations. Maybe you can do this now as well.
This man is as Aussie as it gets, and then TH-cam lists the original audio track as "Language: English (United States)".
For irony points, this video has stable volume enabled, at least for me.
It's an enshitification feature, not a bug.
global disable will be only available in TH-cam Premium lol
I’m Italian and I always hear your beautiful Aussie accent, but I noticed on other original Italian videos I get the English dubbed version. So I suspect it checks the language of the UI instead of your region.
Hi Dave, as a german if think this is a rather good tool ! I rewatched EEVBLOG #1655 and could follow your explanation (yes, i am biased). The translations are seldomly far of. For example, it translated "multimeter" to "moldy man", "GW" to Giga Watt. Positively, it left "Back-to-Back" as there is no german translation for it.
(unmittelbar) aufeinanderfolgend
;)
It's weird seeing Dave in a collared shirt...
The "annotations" option isn't new again, it remained in the menu even after they removed the underlying feature.
The short German & Italian pieces are quite well translated
Google is so big there should be laws to tightly regulate what they do, they have too much power to do what they want without people's consent
If you give them permission, they're allowed to.
Happened to me, on your channel and on Defpom's also! Spanish women voice, got me quite upset at the moment
I get what your talking about when you where talking about annotations, basically thats just to toggle video cards, watermarks and end screens not the annotations your talking about, sadly youtube hasen't brought back that yet :(
Cultural lesson: A rather common girl name in Germany: Ute yes it does sound like an Australian pickup!
You should add the annotations to your raw video when you are editing it, before you send it to TH-cam. That way TH-cam can't remove them.
I'm pretty sure the switch for annotations just disables the end screen stuff, nothing else.
Under playback speed they put a custom slider on the top, it shifts everything down and now I have to scroll down each time. Why are
The next step would be for the AI to speak in another language but with Dave's voice?
It should appear as an option to enable by viewers, but NOT by default
German „Schmerz Widerstand“ some kind of resistent again pain. I would never use this phrase.
Im pretty sure someone on the rule34 subreddit is having a field day with female voice dave.
Because I have been there and done that 👍🏻😎
My advice is always the same, try to get familiar with it asap.
Will only be beneficial.
Please disable automatic dubbing, because in a mobile Browser one can't switch the audio track. It automatically selects the language of the OS.
he said he can´t do it.
TH-cam does it by default and you can´t turn it off.
So ask google to fix this.
@@MultiWirth yeah, good luck with that. Google don't give a fuck.
wtf. 'sleep timer' in the options too lol
Translations aside, what is with the distortion in your original audio? It's like a mid- frequency distortion or resonance
happens for Frenchies too. Horrible. It took me time to understand what was going on
I'm from the Netherlands and I have an extreme hatred of English being translated or dubbed to Dutch.
7:00 yes that's totally pissing me off 😉
Dave has a high pitch male voice.
Wasn't subscribed to the 2nd channel!!!!!
Yeah, couple of days ago I started to watch 'My Mate Vince' and it started in German, I thought is this some sort of joke but no ! turns out Vince new buggar all about it either !
this would be a good feature, if the original audio was the default option
btw, those auto translate things are bacoming a nightmare to search the web, trying to search something for my country perspective and got a lot of usa or europe related posts on google
Also the video title is automatically translated which I absolutely hate. Didn’t find a way to view the original title.
Im french and i like, exept for your channel i can follows your aussi language very well, but some place like india people is hard to follow...:)
I pay YT for no commercials in music playback and have had stable volume for a long time.?
Not all people with a high pitch voice are female. You should know
I don't want english videos translated to other languages.
The channel is ZAFER YILDIZ
Wow! All this A.I. stuff is changing everything so quickly. It's almost like we're living in a Golden Era... Almost... I'm sure there will be random accidental swear words in other languages as well as other such hilarious errors. 😂
Golden shower era perhaps.
It won't help. I'm in the USA and it always plays the german audio.
As a German, it pisses me off. Although I want to hear the AI translation of solar freaking roadways - verrückte Sonnenstraße 🤔
TH-cam is really getting bloody annoying! If you go to another platform, im gonna follow!
And that includes ads.
Are they going to have an option to translate Kiwi into English?
That German is a bit stuttery...I prefer the Aussie original..ha
There's a new AI that translates your voice with assent, see the video of Argentina's President Milei to Lex Friedman
Lol didnt they learn their lesson with the autotranslated titles a few years back.
AI brings some benefits but it stops right before content generation and modification. There is no way I want to consume some artificial stuff.
It keeps switching the CC to spanish and Hindi?
And I don't know how to remove Spanish and Hindi from the option in the closed captions...
AI Sucks Ballz!!!
Maybe the system has chosen female voices because Dave is using his head voice most of the time.
Dave A.I. auto dubbing does no justice. Sorry for anyone that speaks another language other than English.
I watched the multimeter video in German and found it to be mostly ok. The female voice is annoying but I guess it might be still useful for some people who are not fluent in English. So I would leave it turned on in your videos.
Is the same BS with web servers switching languages based of your IP... annoying as hell
It is hit and miss... and have had annotations for a long time.
It could be helpful for people who have no idea of the language. I am happy to get auto generated translations of Russian videos because I would otherwise understand nothing.
The problem is with YT obviously. It should run your videos in English first and only if people want to change to German should they do it manually and not automatically perhaps?
that's absolutely horrible, and the voice speeds up suddenly for no reason then slows down...
Stable volume and Ambient mode apparently only work on mobile devices. But the auto translate is sh1t, apart from making you a lady. 🤣🤣
TH-cam gets more and more shitty over time. I only use it because of a lack of alternatives
