The opening cinematic, especially the music and the last image of Ryu's eyes, really pulled me in when I first played this game. Fun game, even if the way the game spawned enemies exasperated me to no end.
This may be the first action game with cutscenes to advance the story. Other games had stories, and they had dialogue, but this was new. A fairly intricate plot that was your reward for playing well.
As far as the NES trilogy goes, I keep coming back to the first game. Sure, the other two games are much more refined, but they're not nearly as memorable as this one is. A clear case of "First Installment Wins".

I would draw the levels, brick by brick, stone by stone, in class. Played the hell out of this one!
