- Yokohama City Chigasaki Elementary School (Tsuzuki Ward) and Ben Thema Primary School in the Republic of Botswana, located in the Southern region of Africa, have been engaging in cultural exchange through children’s art. The exchange began in 2008, at the occasion of the “One school for one country” project as part of the 4th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD IV) held in Yokohama. Initiated in 2014, the Exhibition of Tsuzuki-Botswana Children’s Art Exchange consists of drawings that all third-year students made and sent to each other, and completed its 10th anniversary this year. To celebrate the occasion, we made a video of the children's art exhibition and the children's school life in both countries with the cooperation of the embassies of Japan and Botswana, JICA Botswana Branch Office, and Nippon Express Co., which generously provided transportation free of charge. The contents of this video provide an overall picture of the initiatives, including the series of events leading up to the children's art exhibition and the online exchange between the two schools that took place as a part of the 10th anniversary project. Please take a look at the exchange between children overflowing with curiosity and smiles, a valuable example of multicultural understanding education in action!
