    Reading throught the comments I feel like I should say- I tried learning Portuguese for years on apps/books/youtube, and did OK, but it never felt natural... I visited Brazil recently and decided to consciously not be self conscious and just converse with people. I learned more about fluency in one day than years of trying to get the grammar right by myself... it's the same thing with dance. Nothing makes fluent sense until you have a partner and decide it's ok to mess up. It's ok to look stupid. Just laugh. Gotta dive in

    Question: I started salsa on1, I am transitioning to on2. During social dancing, what are some tips for counting to avoid losing time (falling back on1)? Those certain songs that are hard to hear clear instrumentation like the Congas, or clave is my current sticking point

    • @thedancedojo
      @thedancedojo  3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Hey bro, there's no special tip that will stop you from falling back on1. I was in your shoes years ago and I know what it's like. The good news is it's a repetition and muscle memory game. There will always be those songs, or moments in them, that are really hard to hear the beat and stay on whichever time you're dancing on. As you get more repetition in for dancing on2 and also switching between the timings, as you listen to more and more songs, you will get better at hearing the timing. The biggest tip i can give you is practice consistently and the more often the better. You will see more progress if you practice 3x in one week than 1/week for 3 weeks. On top of that, even if you practice for just 10 mins of on2 basics at home everyday that will make a difference. And dance to various songs to gather more exposure to music. Once your comfortable dancing on1 OR on2, try dancing a few basics on1, then switch to on2, and back and forth until you have solid control of the timing and you can maintain either as long as you like. Hope that helps! -Robin

    • @francissantos7448
      @francissantos7448 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Bro. I will hazard a guess. There is bachata music which has a very clear 1 and 5 accents. There is also common music with a clear 2-4 (and 6-8) accent. That will be practice for your salsa on 2. Once you get that squared, dance salsa with decorations on the 4th and 8th beat if you are using the 1-2-3 5-6-7 method. I hope that will start you up in awareness of your control in putting your accents to your heart's desire.

    • @Bentrizzle
      @Bentrizzle 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@francissantos7448 Thanks Y'all well the good news is i stopped taking all on1 classes! I also try dancing only on2 with known on2 dancers. It has really helped! I feel so much more confident without having the need to count as much and i can just enjoy the song and dance.

    I understand every follow step here, except her left turn appears difficult. After completing her 1, 2, 3, she steps forward on 5, pivots back on 6, and turns quickly on 7, stepping back on 1. There seems not to be an 8 pause. It took me 20 replys to see how she did this step because the 7 to 1 transition is really fast.

    • @thedancedojo
      @thedancedojo  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It's just like you said, she steps 123-567. Even if someone appears to dance fast you can just do the steps on those counts and it'll work out. -robin

  • @musicalflow_skillslab
    @musicalflow_skillslab 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Nice video, thanks! Question: If you assume that a beginner knows where the "1" is in the music, and also the difference to the "5" (which implies that they also notice clave changes) - what's the name for the level for people who can't hear all that yet in Salsa music?

    • @thedancedojo
      @thedancedojo  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The label isn't important. You can either hear the timing of the music and clave, or you can't. And if you can't do it yet, then you have a new goal. -Robin

    • @musicalflow_skillslab
      @musicalflow_skillslab 4 ปีที่แล้ว
