Make sure you also buy a "pulutan" or dish you can eat while drinking....but please drink lightly.
My jersey city! NJ is a very diverse city, jersey city has a large Filipino and Indian community. Not sure what part of jersey city you are but Newark Ave has a very good Filipino bakery, we go there often for pandesal and I just found out that Max’s chicken (on Newark Ave too) has a more authentic Filipino Fried Chicken than Jollibee(a Filipino friend told me about it), and than just across the street from Kennedy blvd you have little Inida! If you go closer to the height you will start finding more Latin Restaurants( as a Peruvian) I can recommend the “pollo a la brasa” from the restaurant El Gordo on Central Ave(but they have much better pollo a la brasa in Paterson and Elizabeth. And Bergenline(Union City/WestNY) has all the food from Latin America if you keep going north you will find a Korean town(more food to try). Not forgetting our large middle Eastern/African community too, they have yummy foods to try too.
Filipinos are all over the world. Our food is getting more attention lately because more restaurants are opening and the Jollibee fast food franchise helped in that as well.

Wow! Afritada, one of my favorites. I hope they also have menudo. Chicken curry is also good. There is also puto with salted egg on top of it. You can make your own version of halo-halo. Just mix all the ingredients you found in the grocery, place some ice, sugar and evaporated milk and ice cream on top if you wish to.

@@unculturedtravel it depends upon the chef and maybe what sort of ingredients are available. It could be pork menudo with liver and hotdogs or chicken menudo. I think they use tripes on kare-kare. I love this dish too especially with its "bagoong".
The hardest part of halo halo to find is the flan. The ice cream are also expensive and the bananas and camote sweet is not in the store to go in bottle I think it needs to be cook or warm. I find it better to just buy in restaurant they have a complete ingredients. The problem is...I only have jollibee and far away. The restaurant closed in before covid lockdown and the other one don't make them anymore lol.

Usually here in ph. Sinigang or afritada we have a dipping sauce, and rhat is fish sauce and chilli. And on grilled or ihaw is soy sauce with calamansi with chilli
I want my sinigang really sour so I still use a dipping sauce of calamansi and soy sauce (chili optional). I mean our calamansi and soy sauce goes well with a lot of our dishes already.
Rather than pouring the spiced vinegar on the rice, you actually dip the dish (usually fried) like a piece of the the longganisa on it then mix it with rice. You were eating several other dishes, so mixing it with vinegared rice might be a bit weird hahaha. We have breakfast dishes called silogs (garlic fried rice with fried egg). So all types of Ivan’s/meats mixed with this combo. Tapsilog is the most popular. That’s beef. There’s tocilog (sweet pork). Longsilog (longganisa - sweet sausage like the one you had). Bangsilog (fish). They’re the ones that go well with a flavored vinegar dipping sauce.
Ok I will dip in vinegar next time! What is a vinegar I should look for? I have tried a spiced cane vinegar and regular cane vinegar. Are there any others you recommend?
@@unculturedtravel you're welcome. Either of the two (coconut or cane) will do 😊 It will also depends on your food or viands (ulam) if you want to use vinegar. Sometimes we mixed it with some onions or cucumber with a little bit of sugar for barbecues or grilled foods.. but sometimes we just add fish sauce or soy sauce in it just to add more taste. You should also try Pinakurat vinegar 😊👍
sinigang is great especially during cold rainy days...afritada is a filipinized Spanish (tomato based) dish (out of 400plus years of Spain's colonization of PH).
The way Pinoys eat Dinuguan is either with rice or we dip the Puto into it. Quezon is a province about 3 hours from Manila. A lot of Filipinos would pronounce "P" as "F" then vice versa. Also the "B" and "V". The woman said the tomato dish is APRITADA but actually its real spelling is AFRITADA. One name Filipinos never get wrong is "Pacquiao". Because if they see Manny walking and they mispronounced his last name with an "F", Manny might just throw a quick left hook to the jaw 😜

Nice one afritada...rarely vloggers eat them. I find it an alternative from adobo when there's no adobo try that, Machado, menudo. That halo halo is a crave but its good in max when its summer or very hot day my usual way it just makes my hot day worth it. Your place is very beautiful reminds me of Europe in travel channel.
uncultured Noodles are eaten with rice by most Filipinos. Including spaghetti. But in recent years, they learn that its uncool. Nobody makes noodle as an alternative to rice.
Try the Jollibee's Spicy Chicken Joy with Gravy, Amazing Aloha Champ Burger, Burger Steak with Rice, Rice Adobo, Peach Mango Pie, and Pineapple Quencher, they are very good.

uncultured I backpack in super expensive cities, so I had those in Singapore, Macau, and Hong Kong, that is just street food for those on a budget. In Philippines, that is sold in places called Carenderia, those places you get your Filipino food from is a typical Carenderia in Philippines. You can ask them next time, if they are a Carenderia.
Halo- halo is mix mix in English tropical hut in Seattle,WA roast a whole pig and other places in Seattle also lechon pork belly by order and there's a restaurant that roasts a whole pig or pork belly every weekend I think I forgot the name of the restaurant. I think in Belltown or Capitol Hill or somewhere else in downtown Seattle.

@@unculturedtravel I'm not sure if it's a "secret" but I always ask for extra gravy everytime I order chicken joy meal or burger steak meal.. for me, everything goes well with gravy.. one time, my friend ordered chicken joy meal and ask him to add extra rice and extra gravy.. I didn't order anything.. he ate the chicken joy, and I ate rice with gravy all over.
As a Filipino i'd say that's the best way to mix halo-halo, just thoroughly. They say you should mix it hard, but if you do that you kind of lose some of the flavor (like you won't taste the flan anymore).

The right way to eat halo halo is to mix all ingredients and keep on mixing and crushing it until all ingredients is mixed thoroughly then you can eat it little by little while you keep on mixing and crushing the ingredients and the crushed ice is not yet melted. The most delicious part of the halo halo is the bottom part. Because everything is mixed and have settled at the bottom.

The puto taste better when you dip it into the blood stew, by the way the best place for dinuguan/blood stew in LUZON is Pangpanga, and Ilocus, in the Bisayas I heard that Cebu is the best place for it.
There is no manual on how to eat Halo Halo. There is no need to invent trivia to make this Malay shaved ice dessert interesting or exotic. Why would anyone want to melt the crushed ice? Halo Halo is not a religion, there are no commandments on how it is eaten or made. The most famous Halo Halo in the Philippines “The Razon halo halo” from the province of Pampanga is a halo halo that just looks yellow because it has very few ingridients. It is halo halo for those who hate halo halo. They now have branches nationwide. So while Filipinos abroad hype up the halo halo, in the Philippines Halo Halo has gotten minimalist, soon it will just be ice with food colors and drizzle of Corn Flakes from Keloggs. Actually, they replaced the expensive Pinipig to Corn Flakes from cereal boxes.

Halo-halo literally translates to stir-stir, so it's a 'must' to stir it thoroughly before eating so the flavours of all the ingredients combines. If not stirred, it"s not going to taste good.

I spent a year in Pensacola when in the US Navy, and had Pancit all the time in the base galley. Was really good. That desert drink was full of goodies, I would love to try it.
Pancit is just such a comforting dish! Is there many Filipino restaurants in Pensacola? I did a quick google search and was reading about the history of The Officer's Club and Cubi Bar Cafe. Also, if you get a chance to try halo-halo (the dessert drink) give it a go. It's a fun experience!

I had no luck finding Puerto Rican food in Pcola(2013), but found a Cuban place named "Hemingway's" and was pretty good, but small portions. Had ropa vieja with white rice and cuban sandwich... cause the ropa vieja was such a small plate.

It will also depends on your food or viands (ulam) if you want to use vinegar. Sometimes we mixed it with some onions or cucumber with a little bit of sugar for barbecues or grilled foods.. but sometimes we just add fish sauce or soy sauce in it just to add more taste. You should also try Pinakurat vinegar 😊👍

sinigang is great especially during cold rainy days...afritada is a filipinized Spanish (tomato based) dish (out of 400plus years of Spain's colonization of PH).
The way Pinoys eat Dinuguan is either with rice or we dip the Puto into it.
Quezon is a province about 3 hours from Manila.
A lot of Filipinos would pronounce "P" as "F" then vice versa. Also the "B" and "V". The woman said the tomato dish is APRITADA but actually its real spelling is AFRITADA.
One name Filipinos never get wrong is "Pacquiao". Because if they see Manny walking and they mispronounced his last name with an "F", Manny might just throw a quick left hook to the jaw 😜

Nice one afritada...rarely vloggers eat them. I find it an alternative from adobo when there's no adobo try that, Machado, menudo. That halo halo is a crave but its good in max when its summer or very hot day my usual way it just makes my hot day worth it. Your place is very beautiful reminds me of Europe in travel channel.

Lechon Kawali is just street food in places like Macau and Hong Kong. Filipinos assume its so unique. Food is served in styro material, very Filipino.

uncultured I backpack in super expensive cities, so I had those in Singapore, Macau, and Hong Kong, that is just street food for those on a budget. In Philippines, that is sold in places called Carenderia, those places you get your Filipino food from is a typical Carenderia in Philippines. You can ask them next time, if they are a Carenderia.

Halo- halo is mix mix in English tropical hut in Seattle,WA roast a whole pig and other places in Seattle also lechon pork belly by order and there's a restaurant that roasts a whole pig or pork belly every weekend I think I forgot the name of the restaurant. I think in Belltown or Capitol Hill or somewhere else in downtown Seattle.

@@unculturedtravel I'm not sure if it's a "secret" but I always ask for extra gravy everytime I order chicken joy meal or burger steak meal.. for me, everything goes well with gravy.. one time, my friend ordered chicken joy meal and ask him to add extra rice and extra gravy.. I didn't order anything.. he ate the chicken joy, and I ate rice with gravy all over.
As a Filipino i'd say that's the best way to mix halo-halo, just thoroughly. They say you should mix it hard, but if you do that you kind of lose some of the flavor (like you won't taste the flan anymore).

The right way to eat halo halo is to mix all ingredients and keep on mixing and crushing it until all ingredients is mixed thoroughly then you can eat it little by little while you keep on mixing and crushing the ingredients and the crushed ice is not yet melted. The most delicious part of the halo halo is the bottom part. Because everything is mixed and have settled at the bottom.
Halo halo means mixing...so mix first all the fruits at the bottom with the crushed ice and milk before eating it.

The puto taste better when you dip it into the blood stew, by the way the best place for dinuguan/blood stew in LUZON is Pangpanga, and Ilocus, in the Bisayas I heard that Cebu is the best place for it.

Halo Halo is not a religion, there are no commandments on how it is eaten or made. The most famous Halo Halo in the Philippines “The Razon halo halo” from the province of Pampanga is a halo halo that just looks yellow because it has very few ingridients. It is halo halo for those who hate halo halo. They now have branches nationwide. So while Filipinos abroad hype up the halo halo, in the Philippines Halo Halo has gotten minimalist, soon it will just be ice with food colors and drizzle of Corn Flakes from Keloggs. Actually, they replaced the expensive Pinipig to Corn Flakes from cereal boxes.
Many does mixed to pulp but mosly they eat just like u did.... So both are ok.
Btw if u happen to have access to coconut try buko halo halo its like halox2 in steroids. Actually its just halo halo with coconut shavings in it.

@@unculturedtravel Also yes! Vinegar, banana/tomato ketchup, calamansi are good with the sweet longganisa. It’s all about adding contrast like a sour or a spice element to balance out the sweetness :)

Halo-halo literally translates to stir-stir, so it's a 'must' to stir it thoroughly before eating so the flavours of all the ingredients combines. If not stirred, it"s not going to taste good.

I spent a year in Pensacola when in the US Navy, and had Pancit all the time in the base galley. Was really good.
That desert drink was full of goodies, I would love to try it.
Pancit is just such a comforting dish! Is there many Filipino restaurants in Pensacola? I did a quick google search and was reading about the history of The Officer's Club and Cubi Bar Cafe. Also, if you get a chance to try halo-halo (the dessert drink) give it a go. It's a fun experience!
@@unculturedtravel No idea about Filipino Restaurants in Pcola. We had many Filipinos working on base and the kitchen employees made Pancit at NAS Pensacola.
I had no luck finding Puerto Rican food in Pcola(2013), but found a Cuban place named "Hemingway's" and was pretty good, but small portions. Had ropa vieja with white rice and cuban sandwich... cause the ropa vieja was such a small plate.
