Marvelous piece. There is no other violinist composer that wrote with such profundity. More than virtuosity, there is complete knowledge of form, orchestration and harmony all done in superb taste and with extreme beauty. Every measure reveals a workmanship that is a testimony ot true inspiration. But, again, oh Mr. HenryVieuxtemps, who played so beautifully? Will we ever find out?
"no other violinist composer that wrote with such profundity" - you CANNOT be serious??? Please. Great violinist, good chamber music composer, but never a GREAT composer. CORRECTED : suggest you check out the violinist-composers Vivaldi, Bacewicz, Suk, Saint-Saens, etc.
@@brianhammer5107 The only violinist amongst the composers you've listed is Bach. I don't know much about Bach's life, but my impression is that he wasn't renowned as a touring violin soloist (correct me if I'm wrong), so I'm pretty sure he isn't the kind of "violinist-composer" that Caonex was referring to. It's more likely that he was talking about people like Paganini, Wieniawski, Vieuxtemps, Sarasate, Kreisler, etc., who were celebrated virtuoso violinists who also contributed new works to the standard violin repertoire. Vivaldi would have been a more relevant counter-argument, but he predates the degree of virtuosity (and concomitant celebrity) that Paganini pioneered, so it could be argued that he was a different kind of violinist-composer.
@@brianhammer5107 Saint-Saens didn't play the violin either, as far as I can tell! Bacewicz did lead the Polish Radio Orchestra for a while, but she wasn't celebrated as a soloist, e.g. no one talks about her the way they talk about violin-playing contemporaries like Oistrakh and Heifetz, and there don't seem to be any recordings of her solo performances. It seems like a similar thing can be said for the composer Suk (not to be confused with his grandson, also called Josef Suk, who was a famous violinist but not a composer).
I know Ysaye was a great violin virtuoso....but when it comes to his compositions, they are terribly unimpressive...even his solo violin sonatas are terribly unimpressive, as difficult as they may be.
I think you don't have any idea about these sonatas my friend......All sonatas are masterpieces and very difficult....they have some of Bach some of Ysaye's playing style and virtuosity of paganinni Style! 3 in 1..for that reason Ysaye is really difficult to play him....one of the greatest violinists that the world had!
I think when you first listen to the sonatas people often find them to be purely technical, i was different i heard the virtuosity but at the same time i recognized the melodies i the sonatas and believe me they are quite beautiful. You should listen to them more. You might start appreciating them more.

@@MelodiousThunk INCORRECT. Bacewicz was a violin virtuoso! And yes, Saint-Saen played the violin as well as the piano.

Unimpressive is the exact antonym of Ysaye's music !
Then you may or may not like it. But as for me, Ysaye definitely stole my heart ❤️
