- After many requests, we finally got in a saddle that needed the stirrup leathers turned. In this video we cover the two main ways to turn your stirrup leathers, the easy simple way and the way that is a little bit more professional and a little bit more complex.

Conveniently timed. This past weekend one of my stirrups was not dropping to the correct position.
I did the exact thing when my saddle was new. I did not intentionally wet mine! The horse did that for me when he took a roll in the pond. Thank you.

Hello, you said in a previous video that you would show how you attach the saddle strings by drilling through the tree and threading the strings through, I was wondering if that video is still coming?

You used a granny knot? That was not acceptable to my dad. His theory was it takes no longer to tie a proper square knot. .....lol.

PS I used a 2×4 in my stirrups.
When the day was done and the saddle got back in tackroom, it was just a habit right through the stirrups
Most people call a square knot a granny knot because they've never even seen a proper granny knot: they just go through life thinking they're the same thing (they are most definitely NOT the same thing!).
I was more hurt by him cutting the dangles off that leather string when he didn't need to: he's not going to be riding it like that, so leave em be! You never know when you're going to want another 6 inches!

I am [whatever the opposite of pigeon toed is... edit: just learned it's called duck footed] and I've always had trouble with my ankles after riding (you say “without realizing it”... oh heck no, I definitelyrealized it!). I've always assumed soaking them like this would ruin them: I'm so happy to learn that this is possible!
Just what do you do to the extra strap thats left hanging after you put the twist in?
😂 That’s how I measure too! I measure once and cut twice and danged if that thing wasn’t still too short!

On used saddles, where they’ve managed to get the skirts all pooked up, is it possible to make them lay down by wetting them and hanging sand bags on them? What is your cure for this? Thanks and take care.

“Yeah long” … I know exactly how long that is. My “measure twice - cut once” philosophy aside - most things just don’t have to be that exact & “yeah long” is how I get er done.

My ocd won’t allow the stirrup leather to just flow around like that, gotta be different. Flipping the buckle might be an option.

Hi, this is some great information. Thank you for making this video. I have a quick question, once your stirrup leathers have dried, do you take the rawhide off? When you showed your saddle it looked to me that you left it tied, I just want to make sure. Thank you very much.

So simple!!! 🤦 I am far from an expert, but I have enough experience to have noticed how some saddles you just struggle to get your foot in the stirup without reaching down to hold the stirup place. Thank you!!!
I found soaking helps a little but they go back to flat. Good saddle fixer can put Nevada twist on the fenders for not much money. Highly recommend it. Especially if you got knee problems.

Been carrying a buck since I came home from Vietnam wore the pouch out started carrying it in my back pocket all my jeans had an imprint of a buck in my back pocket hahaha 😉🐝
We're fortunate to have a good leather shop here in town so I can have my knife pouch repaired when it wears out. Guy only charges five or ten bucks. I keep offering him more, but he won't take it. Says that's all he needs. Don't know how he does it, but the place is always busy. Must do all right.

You can do all that wetting and drying of the leather or you can go buy stirrup turns and put them on your saddle
For those who are not self-sufficient, do not want to take care of things themselves, do not want to work on things, do not want to fix things, there’s always someone somewhere willing to sell you another gadget.

Would it be a good idea to oil those leather and fenders before starting that process?
They were were thoroughly cleaned and oiled before the process, then oiled afterward

I use Feibings spray glycerin saddle soap to clean and 100% pure Neetsfoot oil for oiling.

The broom handle thing is pretty much of a joke, because it doesn't permanently turn the stirrups. You can leave the broom handle there for days, but as soon as you put weight in the stirrups, you start the process of the leather going back to where it "wants" to be, which is with the stirrups laying against the horse. And the longer you ride, the stronger that tendency is going to be and the more your knees are going to hurt. Besides, it's insulting to us casual riders that we aren't interested in (or can't be bothered) fixing our stirrups correctly 😂 It ain't that hard and well worth the effort.

@@lilik6945 That could be true, although it doesn't take long to soak leaather through and it doesn't change the fiber structure, so I'm skeptical. I haven't done it myself because I've always read it wasn't a permanent solution and a permanent solution is so easy (turning them like in this video). The other thing is I'd be afraid that soaking the fenders partway up would leave a line when it dried. He doesn't mention that being an issue, but I'd soak them all the way to the top if I were going to do it at all. Anyway, take care.
Horrible, heavy leather saddle, why don't you get yourself a synthetic Western saddle? Mine weighs 13 pounds, with lovely fabric fenders that curve nicely round my leg. It's comfortable for me and my horse, I don't have to clean or oil it, what no to like? Come on its 2022 not 1922.
Your lovely synthetic western saddle would not last one week with me. There is a reason why people who actually work off of horseback, professionals, do not use the saddles. It does not matter what the year is, quality never goes out of style.
